Udupi, Jan 22: Karnataka media academy, Udupi district department of news and communications and Udupi district working journalists association jointly held a two-day seminar at IMA auditorium, Udupi Brahmagiri on January 21. The theme of the seminar was the role of media and the problems faced in the coast and their solutions.

Deputy Commissioner T Venkatesh inaugurated the seminar after watering a sapling.

Speaking on the occasion, environmentalist Sharath Chandra said that the protection of environment and its development are like two faces of a coin. “But the environment increasingly gets destroyed in the state with development. There has been a movement against the disasters of development in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district where most people are educated. Environment gets destroyed though there are several government departments to protect it. There should be an analysis together with the role of media in it,” he said.

“Environment gets destroyed mostly by industrialization and urbanization. As urbanization increases, the need for sweet water often troubles us. If water is not stored, there will be acute scarcity of water in Mangaluru,” he added.

M Siddaraju of Karnataka media academy, Jayakara Suvarna, district president of working journalist’s association and Rohini, news officer were present.

Udupi journalists presented ‘Nala Karkotaka’ a Yakshagana feature and a drama titled ‘Second Hand Bhaskara’ on the occasion.
