Mangaluru: Cold war for post of mayor hots up

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jan 21: The government has already announced reservation criteria relating to the election of the mayor and deputy mayor of the city corporation here. The election will be held during February.

The post of the mayor has been reserved for a woman candidate from general category, while that of the deputy, to a candidate from scheduled caste.

After the reservation was announced, there has been a flurry of activity in addition to squabble and internal bickering by people loyal to different leaders within the Congress, in a bid to bag the post. The tactic of sullying the image of strong contenders by making unfounded allegations is also is being employed by some, it is gathered.

A city corporator had called a journalist on Friday afternoon to tell him that Lokayukta had raided the residence of a leader who has been aspiring to become the next city mayor. However, on enquiry, it came to light that the rumour was floated on account of rift between an engineer and the caller.
