Udupi, Jan 20: The Udupi police have arrested another accused for the abduction, dacoity and murder of Santosh Nayak.
The arrested accused has been identified as Rajesh Acharya (36), a resident of Jain Compound, Attavar in Mangaluru.
Santosh Nayak from Sanakkibettu, Parkala had gone missing on December 2, 2016. His wife Sumitra Nayak had filed a complaint in Hiriadka police station on January 4 this year, alleging that Praveen Kulal from Varwady, who was murdered on December 19, along with some others had murdered her husband and disposed off his body.
The police who took up the investigation arrested eight persons in the case. Santosh Nayak had reportedly borrowed Rs 40 lac from three of the accused and had refused it pay it back. In order to recover the money, he was abducted on December 2 and tortured, leading to his death. Unable to get back the money from Nayak, the same night, Praveen Kulal and his accomplices ransacked Nayak's house and abducted his wife and children too. Their gold ornaments were snatched away and they were then dropped back at Sanakkibettu. Meanwhile, Santosh's body was chopped and thrown into a well in forest are at Pernankila.
The police have recovered gold ornaments worth Rs 80,500 from Rajesh.
The accused as well as the gold ornaments have been handed over to Manipal police for further investigation.
The arrest operation was led by DCIB police inspector Sampath Kumar under the directions of Udupi SP K T Balakrishna.
