Dharwad, Jan 20: A family from Devikoppa in Kalaghatagi taluk in the district had taken a newborn back to the village after the delivery. The child was sick and not responding to treatments.

After finding that the child was no more breathing, its parents concluded that it had died. In a development which took the family by surprise, the child blinked minutes before its cremation was slated to be performed.

Netravati Jalgar from Devikoppa had got admitted into Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) at Hubballi for delivery. She gave birth to a female baby on January 12. The baby was suffering from breathing problems since its birth. It was later admitted into SDM Hospital here. As its condition did not improve, they took her home.

The family members, who were preparing for the funeral, were awestruck by the fact that the child was alive. They rushed it to KIMS hospital where it is being cared for in the intensive care unit (ICU). Director of KIMS, Dr Dattatreya Bant, said that the child is being treated in the ICU and that nothing can be said about is condition or its chances of survival now.
