Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Manipur boxers shine at youth nationals


New Delhi, Jan 18 (IANS): Pugilists from Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Manipur won their respective bouts to reach the second round of the Youth Men's and Women's National Boxing Championship here on Tuesday.

In the men's light flyweight (49kg) division, Tamil Nadu's B. Ramakrishnan defeated Haryana's Nishat Dev 4-1, Punjab's Shubham edged out Manipur's Poonam Singh 3-2, while Barun Singh of Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) thrashed Orissa's Santosh Bhoi 5-0.

Suraj Soy of Jharkhand, A.K. Rashanzamir of Goa and Uttarakhand's Suraj Singh Mazila also emerged victories in other bouts in the division.

In the men's flyweight (52kg) category, Punjab's Gurpreet Singh blanked Karambir Bharti 5-0 and Himachal Pradesh's Ashish Kumar trounced Nagaland's Koyyana Sivakumar by the same margin. Uttarakhand's Pawan Kumar eked out a 3-2 win over Jharkhand's Pawan Kumar.

In the men's lightweight (60kg) category, Vishal Sharma of Chandigarh and Md Fejan of Gujarat registered easy 5-0 wins over Gopal Naik of Goa and Ajit Vinod of Kerala respectively.

Suresh Kumar of Himachal Pradesh and West Bengal's Pradeep Ghimire registered identical 3-2 wins over Mizoram's C. Vanlalhriatkima and Nagaland's Thengam Khaimnungam respectively.

In men's light welterweight (64kg) section, Daman and Diu's Yogesh Kumar, Telagana's C. H. Kishor and Himachal Pradesh's Pankaj Kumar blanked their respective opponents by identical 5-0 margins to enter the second round.

In the men's welterweight (69kg) division, West Bengal's Saroj Basnet thrashed Kerala's Sidharth Saju 5-0 while Tamil Nadu's G. Durai Manigandan defeated Assam's Tonmoy Dowarah by the same margin.
