Oman 'temporary home' to 10 Guantanamo detainees

Muscat, Jan 17 (IANS): Ten prisoners from the Guantanamo Bay facility in Cuba have been released and will "temporarily reside" in Oman, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday.

Oman received them at the request of the US government, The Times of Oman quoted a senior official as saying.

The official said the prisoners were pardoned considering their humanitarian conditions and by the directives of Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said.

In 2016 Oman accepted 10 Guantanamo prisoners from Yemen while in 2015 it took in another six.
