Karkala: Nine-day novena begins ahead of annual feast of Minor Basilica

Karkala, Jan 15: MLC Ivan D'Souza on Sunday January 15 inaugurated the nine-day novena ahead of the annual feast of St Lawrence Minor Basilica, Attur here.

The MLC inaugurated the novena by lighting the lamp in front of the St Lawrence statue.

The statue of St Lawrence was carried in a devotional procession from the Basilica to the grotto to mark the celebration. Fr George D'Souza, director of the Minor Basilica offered prayer and blessed the gathering.

Fr George informed that the annual feast celebration has been increased from three days to five days.

Addressing the gathering, MLC Ivan D'Souza said, "Every person dreams of achieving his goals. Holy places like this Minor Basilica give us the spirit and hope to achieve our goals.

"Let the development of this place befit the miracles that take place here. Let there be peace and harmony in society.

"Let this holy place be an example of secularism. Let us work together for the betterment of the Minor Basilica and bring glory to it," he added.

Sunil Kumar, MLA Karkala said, "I feel privileged to be part of the event. Nearly Rs 3 crore has been sanctioned by the central government for various development works in Karkala. A four-lane road will be constructed from Dupadakatte to Karkala.

"When this place was declared as a Minor Basilica, the world came to know about St Lawrence Church, Attur. May it grow even more spiritually," he said.

Gopal Bhandary, former MLA, said, "When we foster feeling of oneness among us, society and community can grow without any hindrances. Let the Minor Basilica not be restricted to this region alone, but become known worldwide."

Bhandary also extended wholehearted support to works to be undertaken at the Minor Basilica.

Richard Pinto, vice-president of parish pastorial council welcomed the gathering. Leena proposed the vote of thanks.

Fr Vijay D'Souza, assistant parish priest, Fr Stephen D'Souza, George Castelino, minority unit member, Reshma Udya Shetty, Harishchandra, member, taluk panchayat, Anitha R Anchan, Santhosh D'Silva and others were present.

    Why all this drama? Very sad. In front of God all are common and equal. This shows how weak our religious leadership is. There are great inspiring people in religious community itself. Also inauguration is not required. Opening mass itself is an inauguration.

    St Lawrence pls pray for us....but kindly keep politicians out these services...Novena does not need a inauguration. Hope Udupi Bishop look into this issue seriously
