Amazon removes Indian flag doormat from website

Washington/Ottawa, Jan 12 (IANS) : Soon after India threatened of not granting Indian Visa to any Amazon official if the company did not withdraw an Indian flag-themed doormat from its Canadian platform, the e-commerce website removed the article from the online marketplace.

A spokesman for Amazon based at its headquarters in Seattle contacted The Washington Post to say that the doormat was no longer for sale on its website.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday said Amazon must tender an unconditional apology and withdraw all products insulting the Tricolour, otherwise no Amazon official will get an Indian visa.

"Amazon must tender unconditional apology. They must withdraw all products insulting our national flag immediately," the External Affairs Minister said in a tweet.

"If this is not done forthwith, we will not grant Indian Visa to any Amazon official. We will also rescind the Visas issued earlier," she said.

Doormats featuring the Indian flag were made available on Amazon Canada site by two vendors Mayers Flag Doormats and XLYL.

An image of the products was tweeted to the Minister, after which she asked the Indian High Commission in Canada to raise the issue with Amazon.

"Indian High Commission in Canada: This is unacceptable. Please take this up with Amazon at the highest level," the Minister tweeted.

Respect for national symbols are important but at the same time respect for the law, the Constitution and rights of fellow Indians is equally important. If we give importance only to national symbols and do not respect the law, the Constitution and rights of fellow citizens it would amount to hypocrisy. I think that is the point that Zeitgeist is making. ?

That`s exactly the point i am making. Flag is just an object. An idea that represents an idea. We have to give respect to the idea that the object represents and not the object itself.

For the people who dont know what the idea that represents the object(Flag) means,

WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN, SOCIALIST, SECULAR ,DEMOCRATIC, REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens:

    -JUSTICE, social, economic and political
-LIBERTY of thought , expression, belief, faith and worship
-EQUALITY of status and of opportunity and to promote among them all
-FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation.

I want people who really think about this ...

If you happen to see a doormat with colors of any national flag .... what is the first thing that comes to mind... i don't know about you, but i would think that particular person is patriotic. I will not think that guy is insulting the symbol of that country. You people will find many things to be offended about if you go looking for it.

Swaraj should concentrate more on the well being of Indians who are outside India rather than do such things to get likes on facebook or twitter.

In a Republic like in India, constitution is the most sacred thing. It is the duty of every citizen to follow it. Yet i see every so many news article where some of the fundamental rights of the citizen are trampled upon. I don't see such a hue and cry about it.

I understand why we do this. This is simply because we are not matured enough for a true democracy like the once the western countries have.

There are probably some potholes on the roads near your houses. Please don't worry about those instead of worry that ebay is selling doormat resembling with indian flag in canada.

    Anand,

Your argument has fallacy of false equivalency.

If you dont get what that means... then try to ask yourself .... is the comparison between parents and flag is same? I dont want to offer an explanation on a platter. I want you to figure it out.

Think it has a critical thinking lesson that you never learnt.

Very good decision. One of my family members born in the USA once bought a pair of slippers with USA flag pattern which was legal under Freedom of Expression in the USA. However, I convinced her the difference between legal and ethical and she politely returned the slippers. (She innocently bought them because they were on sale)

Good job. We are not of the sort who wear undergarments made of national flag patterns. We hold our national symbols at utmost esteem - it should remain so no matter what part of the world.

    Good action by the minister.

    Lydia Lobo,

The problem is exactly that. We hold national symbols at utmost esteem but when it comes of real things we really dont care.

Not respecting for others individual freedoms and right to speech and expression being one of those things.
