Beltangady, Jan 11: In a tragic incident, four persons drowned in a pond here on Wednesday January 11.

The deceased have been identified as Rahim (30), his wife Rubina (25), and Rubina's sister Yasmin (23) and their nephew Suban (16), all from Kaup in Udupi.

The incident took place near Gadaikallu at Nada here.

The family had come to visit the Kajuru Dargah by car. On the way, Suban wanted to wash his feet, and hence they halted at the pond. However, when washing his feet, Suban accidentally slipped and fell into the water. The other family members rushed to his rescue, but they too were washed away.

The siblings' mother Maimuna who also jumped into the water to save the boy began screaming for help. Mohan Gowda, a bus driver by profession, who was at a nearby rubber plantation belonging to Shyamsunder, heard Maimuna's screams and rushed to the spot. He saw Maimuna struggling in the water and jumped in to rescue her. She told him about four others who were also pulled in by the currents.

Sunil Shetty Nonaiah Gowda and Sunder Gowda brought the others out of the water, but by then they had already lost their lives.

Maimuna was taken to Beltangady hospital in Sunil Gowda's auto rickshaw.

Rubina and Yasmin were children of Maimuna and Abdullah, resident of 'Sahim Manzil', Pakeeranakatte. Rahim was from Belapu in Kaup. Suban was the son of Rubina's elder sister Fouzia.

Beltangady police arrived at the spot and investigations are on.

From the news it appears there is a dam on the upstream of the river some distance away which was opened up. Water seem to have gushed in suddenly. Placing warning board in such places can help save some lives.

May their soul rest in peace.

RIP. Innalillah..May God Rest their soul in peace and give strength tp their family to overcome this tragedy .

It would be better if " Swimming " to be part curriculam in school as extra curricular activities. In such cases, in small ponds if someone drowns , then it can save .

I see only in Metro cities, very good facilities. Swimming is also a sport....
