A P J Abdul Kalam opined that over the last 127 years, a number of charitable institutions were founded in and around Mangalore, starting with the one set up by Rev Fr Augustus Muller, and they have been involved in bringing cheers on the faces of the poor sick people.

His charming spell captivated the audience, especially the student community in the stadium.

Addressing the gathering, former president Abdul Kalam recalled his own education which he obtained in a Jesuit Institution, while also appreciating the efforts made by the Christian missionaries who are working towards wiping the tears from the eyes of the poor.

Father Augustus Muller was a great visionary and because of his efforts people in and around Mangalore are getting good treatment, he said.

"I can visualize Fr Augustus Muller sitting under a banyan tree, distributing medicines to the poor.  Today the hospital has thousands of beds and is popularly known as the common man's hospital,"  Kalam stated.

Recalling the contribution made by Madam Curie who invented radiation by X-ray at the cost of her life, Kalam said, that her sacrifice will be remembered always.

Kalam also prescribed the 'peace mantra' to the students. He made the audience repeat the following quotation: "Where there is righteousness in the hearts, it leads to beauty of character, beauty of character leads to harmony at home, harmony at home leads to order in the country and order in the country brings peace to the world".

Righteousness in the heart can be filled only by three persons viz., father, mother and one's elementary class teacher.  Stressing on the need for providing social support to cancer patients, Kalam spoke on how three of his friends who are suffering from cancer are fighting cancer with great courage.

Doctors have got a responsibility to give psychological support to their patients, he stated. Speaking on the technological advancements taking place in the field of healthcare, Kalam said research in stem cell would bring revolution in the field of healthcare.

Bishop Aloysius Paul D'Souza of Mangalore said, "It was a dream envisioned in 2005 during the centenary celebrations of Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI). Now, it is being realized. The other dream was to introduce health card to the patients, which too was realized this year.

The Bishop said that life from womb to the tomb is sacred, hence life should be respected, irrespective of caste and creed. The noble founder of Fr Muller Charitable Institutions has continued to guide the management of the hospital to carry on its mission of helping the poor.

Union minister Oscar Fernandes said the union government has embarked on a special project to provide healthcare to every citizen through insurance schemes. The necessary infrastructure will be set up in the villages to ensure that every villager gets acces to the required medical treatment.

At the end, Fr Muller Medical College administrator Fr Denis D'Sa proposed a vote of thanks. On his way out, Dr Kalam walked up to the choir of 127 members, representing the 127 years completed by Fr Muller institutions, and posed with them for a photo. The young singers were seen happy to pose with the former president of India, who was popularly known as the People's President during his tenure as the eleventh president of the country.

In the final count, the star of the event was certainly Dr Abdul Kalam. He invited select five doctors from the audience to shoot questions at him. He answered them in detail, even though a couple of them were quite tricky. A young student read out a poem in his honour, which he appreciated and relished. There was also a scramble for autographs as he was leaving the dais. Later during the day, Dr Kalam was to visit Dharmasthala to take part in the 'Sarva Dharma Sammelan', an annual event at the famed pilgrimage centre.

Dr Kalam, for sure, left an indelible imprint on everyone in the audience, esp the student community.

Dr. Abdul Kalam is the most popular President India has ever had. He was truly the people's President and he was attracted to children and vice versa. I personally do not understand why the UPA Government were not in favour of this noble figure continuing a second term of office. This is a great mystery. Any Government at the Centre would like to have a President who is totally pliant and a typically "Haan Jee". Therefore, Dr. Kalam may have been a spanner in the works. Dr. Kalam was a personality with sterling qualities.

How true it is, and how sweet it is, in the words of Dr. Abdul Kalam, to know that the foundation of the charitable work laid by Fr.Muller more than 127 years ago in Mangalore has brought so much of legendary influence throughout the region where medical facilities and research has multiplied in a ten fold fashion.

The Mangalore Diocese under the able guidance and leadership of the Bishop has expanded the network of medical facilities to such as extent whereby so many thousands of needy people receive their medical service, free of charge, regardless of their faith. Medical service is the biggest contribution of the Diocese of Mangalore towards secular India. We shall always have a willing heart to help Fr.Mullers in any way possible.

Our entire families who have given more than 100 years of service to Fr. Mullers have been brought up and prospered thru the little income from Fr.Mullers, and we shall always remain humbled and grateful to Fr. Mullers Hospital.

Visiting Mangalore and visiting Fr. Mullers is one and the same for us, because it is our beloved neighbourhood, and it is our humble home.

I was born there nearly 57 years back. My father passed away there in 1959, and my grandfather Dr.P.C.Menezes was a Doctor for many years around 1925-1940. I am also happy that two of my best and most dedicated Choir children of the Doha Mission Church of the 90s are about to qualify as Doctors (Dr.Jonita Fernandes and Hazel Crasto, the latter seen on the front row of the Singing choir. I was happy when Mother Theresa visited the Fr.Muller's Hospital around early 1980s.

Today I am very proud to see one of the greatest Indian President Dr.Abdul Kalam (the People's beloved President) to visit and honour this institution... How I wish the Government of India makes it a point to include Fr.Muller's and the Chapel of St.Aloysius as permanant locations in the itenaries of visit for every foreign dignitary from every part of the world!!!! Long live the jewel of the community - Fr.Muller's and its "Charitable" Activities.

Yet another feather in the crown of humanity, Fr. Muller hospital opened Oncology centre to serve the people and Management chosen a right person to inaugurate its new Oncology centre who popularly know as people’s president (former)- Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Fr. Muller hospital is a well known Institution in and around Mangalore which provided illustrious service to the people of the area. The compassion and dedication of the Fr Muller hospital staff at that time was unbelievable.

It is really admirable that the Nuns who are sacrificing their life to mend the pain of the sufferer. In addition to Kankanady Hospital, I have witnessed another classic example of humanity in ‘Olavina Halli’ which is near to my native. How few people can bring light into the lives of thousands and it is a remarkable achievement.

Every religion should emphasize on an element of social obligation which is most fundamental ingredient of religious values. I wish all the success to the Management and staff of Fr. Muller hospital and continue their service to the underprivileged of the society.

Nice President - nicer and sincere Person. This is Dr. Kalam in a nutshell. One of the simplest human beings on earth perhaps, Dr. Kalam is a rare gem with no worldly aspirations if one may say so. Despite being in a position to influence so many things around him, Dr. Kalam was a pure and clean personality with no craze for either wealth or power unlike so many in our country. For sure, if he wanted, he could have managed yet another term as the President of India. But he did not stoop to cheap and dirty politics to grab the position. He was a role model to so many around him and undoubtedly the most popular 'People's President' of our country.

There are very few like him in this world and his simple life engulfing every caste and creed was a huge example to everyone. Today, he is a travelling Professor of education and good sense. The Fr. Muller's Institution rightly ed a worthy and learned personality in Dr. Kalam as they went on to add to their laurels while celebrating the opening of the Oncology Centre in yet another attempt to improve the medical facilities in Mangalore.
