Dharwad: Renowned scholar M M Kalburgi shot dead

Updated

Dharwad, Aug 30 (IANS): Renowned Kannada scholar and former Hampi University vice chancellor M.M. Kalburgi was shot dead on Sunday by unidentified assailants here, sparking protests across Karnataka, police said.

Kalburgi, 77, was shot in the forehead from close range when he opened the main door of his house in Kalyan Nagar suburb, Dharwad police commissioner Ravindra Prasad told reporters here, about 430 km north of Bengaluru.

The bleeding Kalburgi was rushed to the civil hospital where doctors declared him dead.

"We have registered a murder case and formed a six-member investigation team led by a deputy police commissioner to hunt down the assailants," Prasad said.

According to a witness, two people came to Kalburgi's house on a motorbike around 9 a.m. and sped away after committing the crime.

The heinous incident sent shock waves across the state, with writers, critics and activists staging protests against the sensational turn of events in the twin cities of Hubbali-Dharwad.

"We are examining CCTV footage of Kalburgi's house, area and road on which the suspects fled in a bid to nab them," state Inspector General of Police (IGP) Umesh Kumar told reporters after visiting the victim's residence.

As news spread about the daring attack, hundreds of people including students rushed to the Karnataka University campus where his body was brought for the public to pay their last respects.

Though Kalburgi was controversial for his independent views on social and religious matters, he was a noted epigraphist and a well-known writer of old Kannada literature, especially Vachana literature.

He was born in Yaragal village in Vijayapura district of north Karnataka in 1938.

Kalburgi was a recipient of many national and state awards, including the Sahitya Akademi award, Nrupatunga award and Pampa award.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who expressed shock over Kalburgi's death, air-dashed to Dharward from Bengaluru in a chopper and paid last respects to the departed writer.

Terming Kalburgi's death a terrible loss to the literary world, noted Kannada writers Barguru Ramachandrappa, K. Marulasiddappa and Girish Karnad condemned the gruesome attack and mourned the scholar's death.

"Kalburgi was a bold writer and feared none. He was known to create controversies and make sharp observations against certain practices and beliefs which he thought were superstitious," Karnad told reporters in Bengaluru.

A close associate of Kannada's legendary critic late U.R. Ananthamurthy, Kalburgi was critical of idol worship and mocked at rituals and blind beliefs.

"Kalburgi was known to create controversies many a time and criticise certain practices and beliefs. Even if people differed with him and his ideology, killing him is not acceptable," Ramachandrappa lamented.

Former chief minister and opposition leader Jagadish Shettar of the BJP urged the state government to order a judicial probe into Kalburgi's killing.

"It's a great loss to the Kannada literary world. The guilty should be brought to book and justice rendered," Shettar told reporters here after paying homage to the departed soul.

It is totally wrong to insult the religious beliefs of others. If a man does not believe in Hinduism, he need not follow it. There is no need to ridicule religious objects by talking about urinating on them or in any other way.

Maarga 1, maarga 2, maarga 3, maarga 4 - are decades of scholarly work on kannada literature, especially on pampa kumaravyasa and two more halegannada greats. The kind of work he carried out in his professional life, murderers and their masterminds have no idea.

Maarga 5 - eliminated by sharpshooter-youth, who know nothing about life long contributions of prof khalburgi to kannada literature world. Youth and his senior mentors must be brought to justice. eliminating a 77 years old scolar by hypocrites by using cheating method shows no bravery. Youths who are suppose to be humble in learning are used for criminal activities.

Fundamentalists n fanatics can go to any extent of taking out precious life but learned people can't take extreme positions? Those who talk about social evils are targeted, humiliated and threatened with dire consequences. Hard truth no one is allowed to talk, social evils no one is allowed to confront. Those people whose conscience doesn't allow them to keep quiet on injustice, exploitation, inequality, superstition etc. are very less in number are singled out. They are treated as enemies for speaking truth and revengeful act will close such honest people.

Pro kannada organisations are demanding for a cbi probe but frankly speaking, cbi is now taking instructions from sanghparivaar? And hence justice to prof kalburgi will be delayed and hence denied. Long live religious intolerance!!!

Ashok was very poor and couldn't afford quality life. But what transpired later is astonishing. He rose steadily from local level to highest level in bjp... He owned several acres of land in blr by crooked means, he got a volvo bus for every ten volvo purchases when he was transport minister. He was first transport minister, later became home minister n deputy cm but transport ministry he kept wit himself. in his time lots of volvo busses added to ksrtc bmtc. He cleverly amassed wealth to the tune of thousands of crores but he never got caught. He has hotels n palace like house. Mr. Kalburgi may be said some comments on some religion. This may hurt to that religion personals. For those comments as result by killing him is not good. I don't think any of our religions allow this .

As per our Indian law every person has freedom of speech as his fundamental rights. No one can object to speak any person either his speech is hurting any religion or not. Because of this reason people like Praveen Togadia, Kalla Bhatta,Ovaisi etc targeting opposite religion or each other during their speech.
Every one has to remember at same time our Indian law says no one can hurt every ones religious sentimental in their speech or acts. Why don't people use this provision and put case against Mr.Kalburgi instead of killing him.

Unfortunately, great thinkers/ rationalists who try to save the lives of innocents/gullible by creating awareness from religious dogmas, occult, black magic, spontaneous miracles, and other foolishness to control them are being steadily targeted and mercilessly killed!! Reminded me of a similar ruthless killing of the great rationalist Dr. Narayan Dabholkar, who spent his entire life creating awareness on dubious practices like "Bhanamati", marrying off girls to Gods, etc., whose killers are still at large even after 2 years!! These incidents demonstrate the power of organized religions, cults, and the like that whosoever tries to create awareness among the downtrodden and exploited is just eliminated!! God save us from these fundamentalists and bogus soothsayers!!!

Why are those blowing the whistle or giving witnesses against dubious (all Godmen, irrespective of religion are dubious) being targeted and finished off?? Truth, if spread, among the gullible will break the spine of these dubious organizations hence the haste in eliminating anyone who speaks about it!!! Kalburgi sir/Dabholkar sir should be considered a martyrs who spend their lives educating the gullible and innocent from falling into the grasp of self styled Godmen/cults/organized religions etc.!!! God given everything to the mankind it looked after all by the 'angels'.
In our difficult times..it's none other than angels who help us the most from time-to-time.
Death and Birth in the hands of God. We still do not able to elaborate what's actually in his mind.
We cannot consider all famous personalities as done good in the society while looking awards/prizes.
In this case even shri Kalburgi is also not an exceptional.
Something somewhere due to wrong things..death occured..as ordered by the God.
For accidental death/suicides..people wants to take re-birth to complete the cycle by any means. No escape from it.
If like these every body commit mass suicide and go to 'jannat'..a short route.

Many right-wing groups of sanghparivar like vhp bd etc. mentored by rss have taken objection to professor Khalburgis talk on superstition. His views hurt practicing-superstitious fundamentalists. Gandhi could have been easily killed by britishers but they never killed him bcz they respected him for his intellect. Indians killed him. Prof.Khalburgi who is a scholar was hated by some people for his bold views on superstition and exploitation. Sad to note that in a democratic system there is no space for criticism that may be extreme in nature. People who don't keep guerrilla security, yet speak boldly and fight against the mighty are killed in cold blood using deceitful means. Rip to Prof Khalburgi.

Dont forget what happened to great novelist Salman Rashide for his contravercial 'Satanic verses'....
His fourth novel, The Satanic Verses (1988), was the center of a major controversy, provoking protests from Muslims in several countries. Death threats were made against him, including a fatwā calling for his assassination issued by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the Supreme Leader of Iran, on 14 February 1989, and as a result he was put under police protection by the British government.
