Udupi: District swimming pool at Ajjarkad inaugurated

Udupi, Apr 25: The much awaited district swimming pool was inaugurated at Ajjarkad here on Saturday April 25 by Rajya Sabha member Oscar Fernandes.

Addressing the gathering, Oscar said, "I am happy to be part of this event. I will ensure that every school has a basketball court and sanction a grant of Rs 1.31 crore from the MP development fund. This will improve fitness among students."

Oscar also performed some mudras in yoga like breathing exercises.

Sports minister Abhaychandra Jain promised to fully equip the district indoor stadium at Ajjarkad and sanction Rs 1.31 crore towards the tennis court. "Swimming is good for building a sound body and mind. I will contribute more towards sports development in future. I urge everyone to make optimum utilization of the swimming pool," he said.

Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwaraj said, "After two years, the dream of having a swimming pool has become a reality. It will need Rs 1.20 lac towards maintenance.”

"Swimming at the pool will be free of charge till April 30. The district stadium will include all types of games and they will be implemented soon. In addition, Guinness record holder Gopal Kharvi will be the swimming coach," he added.

The swimming pool has been built at a cost of Rs 2 crore. The kids' swimming pool is 10 meters long and 6 meters wide. The adults' pool is 25 meters long and 22 meters wide. Ten showers have been constructed separtely for men and women, apart from two separate dressing rooms. A borewell has been installed as well as a separate room for pool associated machines. According to a sports department member, the pool will be maintained by private contractors.

District commissioner R Vishal welcomed the gathering. Assistant director Dr Roshan Kumar Shetty compered the programme.

    The swimmers should have proper shower before jumping into the pool. It doesn't look like they did.

    Great job by the local Government for udupi. make sure maintenance/ operation on daily basis along with standard all the time! so that people of udupi can enjoy the pool !

    like that good work need to do.also every gramapanchayat we need a garden and jogging track.most of panchayt collecting tax correctly.but what they will give back to public that also equally importance.

    I saw someone disagree with my view so many transmitted disease everywhere in the world so without swimming dress should be allow to swim public swimming pool,should be supervised by some honest people that dress should be clean every single use.

    Good effort by the government. But have to maintain the facilities provided unless people want to see frogs and insects swimming on the water in a few months.
