Couple visiting beach handed over to police - mother of boy dies

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Mar 17: In an incident which occurred on the evening of Monday March 16 at Mogaveerapatna here, a couple that had come to Ullal beach for fun was handed over to the police by locals.

The locals developed suspicion over the twosome as the boy and girl belonged to different communities and also because of their indecent behaviour.

The boy identified as Ubaidulla (19) from Kudroli in the city, and the girl who hails from Moodushedde in Vamanjoor here, were taken into custody by the Ullal police. It is said that both of them are pursuing their PU studies through city-based Matha Tutorials, and hence know each other well.

They had come to the beach in a Honda Activa scooter. Some people who saw them behaving obscenely at the beach, questioned them. They came to know that the two are students of a tutorial college, and belong to different religions. They then called Ullal police and entrusted the couple to their custody.

It is gathered that the two were led to the office of assistant police commissioner, Kalyani Shetty. Mudipu, Ullal, and nearby areas have been experiencing communal flare ups now and then of late on account of incidents which trigger violent backlash. In the light of the volatile situation, the citizens have opined that the student community, which is in the habit of visiting the beaches in Ullal and doing something that has the potential of igniting communal clash.

Zohara (41), mother of Ubaidulla, died of cardiac arrest on Monday, on coming to know that her son had been arrested. She was suffering from heart-related ailments since sometime, sources said.

What is disturbing is that even after the 19 year old boy and girl was taken to the police station . The police did not use their basic knowledge and sent them back with a warning. Taking them to the head office was not needed . And even after this why were they not left . I blame the police for the deth of the boys mother . And the police department should be taken to task in court . They did not have the right to do what they did . The police department should be taken to court for damagrs caused to the family because of the incident . Unless the department is not maid to pay they will not learn.

What is really interesting to know is that those who jumped to proclaim the innocenbce of a rapist of a 4 year old child just a few days ago here, now have a serious problem with a boy talking to a girl on the beach - because he belonged to a different religion. Their entire opinion in life depends on religion of the people involved. This is what excessive love for one's religion can do to human beings. Get well soon, is all I can say

is there an apartheid in Mangalore? The report says that this couple 'taken into custody' for belonging to different religions? Are you serious?? Since when has there beeen an a apartheid law in India. How exactly does "belonging to different religions" warrant police custody? If the police really took the couple into custody for roaming on the beach, then it's time stringent action is taken against policemen. I would like to know what about those who apparently brutally assaulted the boy? Why has that been omitted here? And what action is being taken against them?

    Rajesh,

I understand what you are pointing out and accept that such things are done by people belonging to different religions. But you can just give excuse that what some people did to a particular boy for speaking to a particular girl. We as a society should collectively put end to such stupidity and we need to learn to respect others rights.

Many would question what would i do if it were my own sister. The answer is that she has her own rights and i need to respect that for better or for worse. I simply cant force my will on my sister because she is not my property.

Bottom line is that stop treating women as property.

I think we ALL need to protest this Moral Policing.
We must do something the Keralites tried to do some time back (kissing in public).
I know some decent Hindu boys (no connection at all with sangh pariwar, I swear) who are willing to participate and ready to come to tannirbhavi beach this Sunday (I must confess I am slightly old for these activities)
All we need is some like minded secular people's cooperation.
Please send some girls from non hindu community (whose parents I presume will be readily willing, judging from the comments I see here)
Let the boys and girls enjoy. Let us ensure police protection to the boys and girls so that no moral police dares to disrupt their fun.
Please don't give communal colour to everything.
Need of the hour is to show the moral police their place, especially those jobless moral police from Hindu community.

    Dear friends,
Trust me bhajangdal has just created a story about this boy and girl behaving indecently. I was previously attacked for just talking to a hindu friend of mine. When I lodged a complain with the police. Those bhajrangdal people told police that I had hit my vehicle to another vehicle and was trying to run away (hit and run case). Those guys are bloody liars and they will always be. So people who think they were behaving indecently. Make sure that u have been attacked by bhajarangdal once or make sure u have been in this persons situation before u talk about them behaving indecently.

Luckily I had enough links and connections to put them in their place. Under what basis have these couples been arrested. Is going to the beach a crime. What do u expect us all to do. Sit and Lay eggs at home.first going to pubs was a bloody crime. Now going to the beach is a bloody crime. At one point I think our ladies here will have to wear Burka's like in Saudi. To hell with u bhajarang and to hell with all this dirty politics in India.today a 19 year old boy lost his mother just for something as stupid as going to the beach. Its a shame to even hear such things. Shame literally.

Those who are complaining about police or local actions, do they allow girls of their community to mingle with boys of other communities? If no then why want this privilege for boys of their own community? Because they can lure them to convert to your religion? And those who think that such behaviour is nothing to do with religion, they should know the concept of Memram and non-mehram where a Muslim girl isn't allowed to mingle with non-Muslims males. If you impose such restrictions on girls then why not on boys of your community?? Because they lure and convert a Non-believer into so called believer??

The deceased has been identified as Zohra (45) a resident of Kudroli in Mangaluru. She suffered heart attack after Ullal police contacted her over phone and informed her that her son Obaidullah was attacked by “moral police” for visiting Ullal beach along with his classmates belonging to different communities. Zohra’s husband lives in Sharjah.

A group of PUC students from a private institution in the city had visited Ullal beach on Monday evening. 19-year-old Obaidullah was one among them.
When a few local miscreants, said to be Bajrang Dal activists, noticed Obaidullah and a girl belonging to Hindu community talking to each other, they surrounded the students and brutally assaulted the Muslim boy. Obaidullah has sustained severe injuries in the attack.
Later the miscreants handed over Obaidullah and the Hindu girl hailing from Moodushedde near Vamanjoor, to the jurisdictional Ullal police. However, Ullal police registered a complaint against the assailants based on a complaint lodged by Obaidullah.
When Sangh Parivar activists threatened to storm Ullal police, the police shifted the duo to another police station in Mangaluru and informed their parents.
Where is the law and order in this country ?
Is Govt afraid to take action ? Why people sitting calm? Is there no justice in Karnataka?

Time for people of coastal karnataka to file the petition against moral policing to get rid off once for all.

    Kusuma Kumari. G. Nellore.
Her quote: (Corrected to suit the 'place' here o.k. She quoted it the other day when the place was a 'Lodge')....
The boy and girl must have a 'clear cut idea' when they go to a beach.
Otherwise everything will go haywire. If they plan perfectly everything will go smoothly.
Arre yaar...Forget religion yaar!!If the boy and girl want to go together it's their hand, their hand and whatever is joined to their body!
    Whose father what goes??
Let them play Lagory, Chuppa Chuppie, Jubilee or whatever!
What's anybody's problem?Religion may be different- Organs and all same no?? Or have you tested whether the boy has 2 bananas??
    What nonsense is this ???
    Bringing disrepute to Mangalore.
    Nonsense.

Afterall everyone one of us have the right of freedom. This is why gangrapes and all other unexpected activities take place in a only country like India. Locals are responsible for all the disasters happened.

They want to ban beef no alternative food. First they said, they will ban only cow meat. Similarly these goons, do not have guts or capacity to take their girl out for party, picnic or beach. But get agitated when others enjoy.

Sorry, this is the real fate of Mangalore now. Venom is slowly but steadily spreading across the Coastal area and shortly sorry to say, this region may turn to be like Taliban culture.

I second your thoughts. I am having a doubt whether the police are protecting the interests of citizens or of that of some hate mongers in the society.

Instead of giving protection to the college tour, police asks to cancel the tour. Instead of arresting people who humiliated girls having tea with friends in a restaurant, police get a bond from the victims!

I think its time for all like minded hindus, muslims and Christians join together and launch a massive protest against the inefficiency of police in Mangalore.

In India there is no such law banning couples freely or being together, unlike few countries where boy and girl cannot be together. If that is so then who are those people to make their own law and harass the couples roaming freely without troubling others. The police should file criminal case against them for interfering in the personal life of the boy and girl which led to the death of an innocent mother. The family members of the deceased women should also lodge a complaint against them. Then only these type of incidence can be stopped.

Had the police sent home the Boy immediately then mother would not have died.
