Mangalore: Worm found in mid-day meal supplied by Iskcon

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Nov 30: A worm was found in the mid-day meal provided at a government school near Dr Ambedkar Circle here on Friday November 29.

The meals for the school are prepared and supplied by Iskcon under Akshaya Patra scheme.

The worm was found in a plate of rice.

On Friday, meals were supplied to government girls' high school by Iskcon as usual. A girl spotted a worm in her plate of rice and brought it to the notice of a teacher.

The teacher who responded to the situation said that worm was found in mid-day meal at the school even on an earlier occasion. "We have informed Iskcon about this. The worm might have been in the rice," said the teacher.

Iskcon officials who arrived at the school assured that measures will be taken to ensure better hygiene and cleanliness. As the worm was big, they surmised that it was among the vegetables.

Thats no big issue. We even find cockroaches in a 5 star hotel.
The government is doing such schemes just to push those people who are finding it hard for a single meal .some people even find it hard to earn for a single meal. Its just like saying if you want meal u join a school.just to educate those people who still do not know anything about education.
Like the labors from Bijapur working everywhere in Mangalore have you seen those kids ??
We like to say our kids if u eat I will give you a ice cream or a chocolate.
Its just some ugly people trying to make politics of it.
Yes the food should be clean and hygiene thats true and it should not be stopped under any circumstances.
At least those people would join school just for food.
but it should be properly scanned and investigated its the right of every citizen to see that good food is given to these people but not stopping iot by giving useless comments

Sometimes, small worms are found in rice but the type of worm (size) shown in the picture may be found only in Cabbage or cauliflower etc. Possible that someone had a foul play in this incident.

I am bought up in village area & we have rice fields , as per my knowledge this kind of worms are common in old boiled raw rice(in our Tulu language we say ‘’URPEL- ARI” some time we cannot make out ,its looks like rice only!!! even many times I have found in my plate when I was eating at home!!
I agree with Dixit’s comment , it is very difficult to clean & cook 2.5 TON of rice Everyday!!! Please don’t make it a big issue.

Please appreciate the fact that the ISKCON officials came immediately and did not argue or defend themselves but assured of measures. This worm must have been in the vegetable and they should ensure in future that the vegetables are cleaned properly. What is disturbing is that the teacher who claimed that a worm was found even earlier, did not inform ISKCON. Had they informed earlier, may be this incident could have been avoided.

IF THE WORM FOUND IN RICE SUCH INSTANCES CAN BE AVOIDED BY CLEANING BEFORE USE WITH ONE OR TWO EXTRA STAFF BUT TO BE PRECISE SUCH RICE SEEMS TO BE GOOD QUALITY AND WON'T GET SPOILED EVENIF A LITTLE MORE BOILED BECAUSE IT IS NOT NEW. NEW RICE ALWAYS SERVED HALF BOILED AND NOT GOOD FOR CHILDREN.
FOR A PETTY ISSUE LIKE THIS NOT NECESSARILY TOO MUCH OF COMMENTS TO DEMORALISE THE ISKON SPIRIT AS WE KNOW HOW OUR GOVT./POLITICIANS TAKE UNDUE BENEFIT OUT OF SCHEMES
IN THE NAME OF POOR PEOPLE.

I personally think this is just a small incident and can even happen in up market top grade hotels too and too much of fuss is made of it just because the meals are free!!

One should practically think that when such huge quantity of the meals are made despite taking maximum precautions a foreign object like a worm, fly, etc. can accidentally fall!!

I wonder how many worms people eating outside might be consuming unknowingly especially those found in vegetables like cauliflower, okras, leafy vegetables, etc. Do the vendors even bother to clean the cauliflower and ensure that it is dewormed fully, but Gobi Manchurian is devoured like hell on roadside eateries by the well off!!

Do not make a big deal about this.
It is just a rice worm. These things should not be publicised so much as if some extra terrestrial...
This will unnecessarily make the consumers squeamish.
Better that we just cook rice and do not cut it.
Vegetable is cut and the worms along with that hence no trace and no picture of those in the food.
But in green salad served in hotels\eateries you may find one or two surfing the vegetable cuttings.
I understand these maggots are full of protein. So no need to feel squeamish.

Sometimes when the food after cooking kept open to get it cool.
May be there are chances something must have fell from above or some insects must have entered. We cannot just blame Iskon for their negligence. A mistake does happen and moreover our environment is not clean, especially during monsoon seasons all sorts of insects enter in.

Normally a worm in rice means that rice has no chemicals, or preservatives added, During the olden days the red rice is found rice worms in it, and the reason is that time there were no preservatives were available ,
ISKON staff must ensure cleaning and washing of rice properly before cooking or else these kind of negligence will occur in future too.

'Worms' are less dangerous than artificial fertilizers, chemical pesticides and insecticides. Artificial Fertilizers harm oneself in long way and difficult to detect. Earlier entire Indian agriculture was based on the nature’s best fertilizer – Cow dung and one of the nature’s best pesticide. Cow’s urine along with the neem based solutions were used extensively in the agriculture. 80% crops which grows world-wide is depend upon human waste using chemicals. ISKCON is doing a great job by providing midday meal which won't see any part of the world. It's only happening in India..pilgrims who visit temples are provided with a prasadam - meal in daytime as well as at night. Most of the temples are situated near river/sea reason behind to dip before to stand in front of the 'God'. That's the pureness one's needed to attain the blessing of God.

ISKCON is a Religious organization set up with the sole Purpose of spreading devotion of God, and not for doing profitable catering business. Even earlier food supplied by ISKCON to the schools had worms. So, the midday meal contract should be given to small Self-Help-groups instead giving to financially very strong ISKCON .

Even at home we used to get these kind of creatures in the plates! Washing 1 or 2 kg rice at home cannot ensure that its 100% clean preparations. In ISKCON run Akshaya patra program they usually cook 2.5 TON of rice EVERYDAY, so you may find some glitches. You name any product, any scheme / any discovery / any damn thing in this word which is free from defects. Rather we should feel indebted to the food provided by the group. The major beneficiaries(the Poor Students) cannot even voice in their stand in this media owing to their poverty. You and I can only COMMENT on this page rather it takes GUTS to serve the Students like what the ISKCON MONKS are doing !! Hats off to them !!

Common guys... recently i found an ugly looking insect in my canteen food in the veg mess, i being strict veggie was so disgusted that i didnt eat for some days at my mess. i told my mum n she said "In a family of three, we have so many problems in refraining from these creatures but ur mess is cooking for 600-700 guys, so it may be common. dont worry abt those things" She also taught me that though we throw money for the meals still we cant expect quality. I had visited the Akshaya patra unit in Mangalore and Bangalore as a part of my project and i have seen the cleanliness and hygiene. there was an article in TOI recently, that it is comparable to the ICU / Operation theater of a hospital!
