Mangalore: 'Rat sambar' in mid-day meal - ZP CEO inspects Iskcon kitchen

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore

Mangalore, Jul 31: A day after a rat was found in the mid-day meal at Krishnapur government school, Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat CEO Dr Tulasi Maddideni on Tuesday July 30 inspected the mid-day meal preparation unit of Iskcon near Urwa Market, which had supplied the food.

Speaking to reporters after her visit, she said, "The officials should ensure that there are no shortcomings or mistakes committed while giving mid-day meals to students," she said.

As a half-roasted rat was found in the mid-day meal given to Krishnapur government high school on July 29. The meal was supplied by the Iskcon centre. The ZP CEO inspected the kitchen of the meal preparation unit and checked all aspects in the kitchen including cleanliness and hygiene.

"Investigation will be done to determine how the rat fell into sambar and a report will be sent to the government," she said.

Nandanacharyadas, incharge of Akshaya Patra at Iskcon said, "We do not know how the rat fell into the sambar. At Iskcon, we prepare food giving importance to cleanliness and use modern equipment. The food it prepared at a temperature of over 100 degree celsius. If a rat had fallen in, it would have melted, and more importantly, we first check the sambar before sending. The food is sent in our own vehicle and we do test control every week," he said.

Akshara Dasoha officer Manjula K S, Suratkal police station inspector M A Nataraj among others were present.

Mr Praveen - dont comment without knowing facts. The Govt is only giving a certain amount for mid day meals to school children. the rest is funded by ISKCON from their own funds/donations. for more details pls contact ISKCON reps and they will explain all facts. dont jump to your own conclusions and act like a fool. instead of appreciating the good job that ISKCON is doing, you are only commenting for the sake of commenting.

Why MANUAL cleaning of food grains, nowerdays a good food grains sorters are available to sort 100% quality of rice, dhal ,and other grains.
For a rat issue, rats can hide inside the big vesel and cooks does'nt noticed this, rat may cooked in the dhal, they must ensure a clear visual inspection before mixing the water and food grains, hope ISKCON will adopt systamatic procedure before cooking the food

ISKCON is founded with a sole purpose of spreading the devotion of Lord Krishna through out the world.
So, they are not supposed to take up Catering Business which is a Profitable business as the govt reimburses full expenses including labour & transportation charges to ISKCON.

Periodic, unannounced inspection of all places where Govt. sponsored food preparation is done to serve the school children and others should be
done and no leniency should be shown to those who transgress.

It is good Dr. Tulasi M. went to ISKCON but this one time visit will not serve the purpose as the kitchen managers are informed in advance and cleaning etc will be done in readiness.

Wonder, such huge quantity of Veg. used are cleansed before they are cut. Now a days lot of pesticides, which are dangerous to human health, are used to keep away insects\rodents and as well to keep the veg.\fruits fresh!!
Sometimes, these chemicals may be the reason for bad stomach etc.

Good job by ZP CEO Madam Tulasi. It appears that ISKCON was well prepared to meet the situation and contigency plans were made to put topi and mouth cover to the workers in the kitchen. It is a well known fact theere are hardly any places in Mangalore like hotels, caterers which prepare food in totral hygene condition.During previous MCC management there were frequent checks in hotels etc., to ensure clean work place. It looks those days were gone now.
Rat is a common menace in shops, hotels, big kitchens of caterers. In village grocery shops, kitchens of big caterers the cat runs over thee stored food items in bags which are always kept open in night times. Now most of the people are aware of hygeneness and prefer to go for only packed grocery and other food items.
Moreover the free food is always prone to carelessness by the work force which is a common trend with us.For eg.water used for cooking used from ordinary taps be it from toilet pipe, cooks will not wash their hands with soap after using toilets during work time, frying oil is reused which is very dangerous, boiled rice is soaked in unclean gunny cloths, for preparing the cold butter milk the unclean cheap quality ice being used, dhaniya, curry leaves used for preparation of sambar etc., are not properly cleaned are few instances of our hygene awareness.
It is hoped that Madam Tulsi will render her special attention in this ragard.

Of course, rats can crawl in, rats can jump in (like from frying pan to the fire) and some one can put in there too.
There are guys who want such things to happen. They do not want any good things any where or to anyone. (may be the hoteliers\shop-keepers in the area who do not get this business)

And of course, some earlier pictures of a kitchen in the schools, was\were very shabby and can not rule out various rodents make sorties on the rim of the containers kept open in those kitchens.

Marbled or granite walled\floor kitchen can be kept clean easily and it is one time expense.

First the Govt. should instruct schools to have proper\clean place for keeping\storing food, with a false ceiling, so nothing falls from the roof.

Question is, why suddenly a spurt of various rodents discovered in the mid-day meals?
