Chandan Mitra 'regrets' saying Amartya Sen should be stripped of Bharat Ratna

New Delhi, Jul 26 (Agencies) : BJP MP and newspaper editor Chandan Mitra has said that he "regretted" saying that economist Amartya Sen should be stripped of his Bharat Ratna for criticising Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

"I think I may have exaggerated. I do regret the part about taking away of Bharat Ratna from Dr Sen, I oversaid it," he told a news channel on Friday.

The Rajya Sabha member's statement comes after a day after Sen said he as ready to return the country's highest civilian award if former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee asked him to do so.

"Mr Chandan Mitra may not know that the Bharat Ratna was given to me by the BJP-led government and was handed to me by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. If Mr Vajpayee wants me to return it, I will certainly return it," Sen had told another news channel.

The BJP too had distanced itself away from Mitra's remarks.

Party spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman had tweeted: "Bharat Ratna debate - unfortunate. BJP is not a part of it. Views expressed by member/s can only be construed as their personal opinion".

After Sen told a channel that "as an Indian citizen I don't want Modi as my PM. He has not done enough to make minorities feel safe", Mitra tweeted: "Amartya Sen says he doesn't want Modi to be India's PM: Is Sen he even a voter in India? Next NDA Govt must strip him of Bharat Ratna."

Amartya Sen has rightly said whatever he felt being such a great knowledgeable person.
Every day there were strange things happening for BJP in Karnataka and for the climax they had no roof left over their heads. Now another election is coming very close and BJP has extra ordinary happenings every day.
One of the important leader of BJP is in USA is begging for a entry visa for Modi, followed by this some groups sent letters to Obama not to give visa to Modi. Almost every Motel and hotel in USA is owned by Patel and Gujju bhai of Gujarat who are USA citizens. They want a ‘dandia’ party in October in USA with Modi as the chief guest but they have no knowledge what happened back home in 2002.
They send sponsor letters to Gujju bhai’s and every letters is honored with visa except one rejected that is of Modi. I think Modi should not apply for USA visa rather he should ask USA people to come and meet him in Ahmadabad.
At present due to Rajanath Singh requesting USA authorities to consider Modi visa issue is really a humiliation for 1.2 billion people of India.

Another eminent economist, Jagdish Bhagwati, who has been backing the Gujarat model of economic growth said “I am not going to vote for Modi. I have no particular affecton for him”.
So, Amartya Sen is not the only economist who doesn’t want to vote for Modi.

Sen doesn't have to regret. He is in his senses and his comments are that of an intellectual and not that of Mitra. Mitra thought being an politician he can talk anything. Now he has to face the brunt. These type of politicians doesn't deserve to be our representatives. It's shame for us.

pls don't drag the names of great personalities like Dr. APJ for cheap political debate. No doubt, BJP always feel proud for nominating Dr. APJ for the highest post in the country. Correct yourself, Dr. APJ do not need anyone's favour to reach that level even now!

Great Mr Chandan Mitra, later realized it was mistakenly made such comments. I think here even Amartya Sen also should regrets about his decision of "I will certainly return it," That means he does not have any respect for such a great award BHARAT RATNA, it was very sad. let him contest next LS election from corrupt Congress party' the party which was looted my country and spoiled it from 60 years of Independence. Still some people are struggling even for one time bread & butter. jai Hind
