Mangalore: 36 bus shelters to come up across widened highway

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jul 11: Regional transport officer (RTO), Mallikarjun, informed that plans are afoot to build 36 bus shelters across the stretches of the national highways in Dakshina Kannada district that are being widened. These shelters will be built in association with National Highways Authority of India, he explained.

He was speaking after presiding over the Transport Adalat meeting held at the regional transport office here on Wednesday July 10.

He informed that the railway officials have requested for setting up prepaid auto rickshaw counter ten metres away from the  railway station at Mangalore Junction (Kankanady) station. He informed that the city corporation would be requested to build concrete bed there for the purpose.

Hasanabba Ammembal drew the attention of the RTO to the fact that out of three buses which have permission to operate between the city and Ammembal, only two are operational now. He urged the RTO to take steps to ensure that the third bus also undertakes trips between these two destinations regularly.

Secretary of Citizens Association, Choodamani, suggested for increasing the number of seats earmarked for women passengers in buses, as the number of ladies using bus services has gone up considerably of late.

Santosh Bajal demanded bus facility to Bajal Kallakatta, while Steven from Veeranagara complained that buses on Bajal route are not running as per schedule. The RTO felt that the problem relating to buses in this sector will not get resolved unless an over bridge is built on this route.

Ashok Bhat wanted the concerned to take steps at the time of road construction itself to see that water does not get stagnated on roads. Hanumanth Kamath, president of Nagarika Hitarakshana Samiti, pointed out that at many places where concrete roads have been built by taking over land lying by the side of the road, vehicles get parked on the roads, thus defeating the very purpose of widening these roads.

Democratic Youth Federation of India district president, Muneer Katipalla, said that some city buses cut short their daily operations by not undertaking last trips at night. He also said that in spite of repeated warnings, LPG tankers are not plying with two drivers and a cleaner as per set norms.  Gerard Towers, president of Nagarika Hita Vedike, wanted the RTO to take steps to end the menace of shrill horns of buses.

Former deputy mayor of the city, Judith Mascarenhas, former president of Someshwara gram panchayat, Ismail, Ivan Pais, Narayan Bantwal, and Rosy also came up with suggestions at the meeting.

Of course bus shelters required in the City areas where bus shelters were removed/demolished when the roads were concretised. At many places people stand on some open places in open sun and rain or stand under the trees. It is a pathetic state of the senior citizens to wait for long time on roadsides. Another thing is the drivers stop buses here and there as per their whim and fancy. Some bus shelters are being occupied by beggars and cows as buses stop somewhere else. The RTO should look into this and stop this attitude of the bus drivers.

The priority is sidewalks. Construct pedestrian walkways first to reach the bus shelters.

Public is risking their life while walking across the roads.

Having had the opportunity of visiting Mangalore at least twice a year, and having reviewed the state of affairs of our transportation and mobility system, we must admit that there is a tremendous progress in every corner of the transport sector. Our single major problem in India is that our supply of transport facility just does not match with the growing demand on account of the growing population.

Everyone cannot afford to buy a car because it is not only expensive but also the cost of gasoline is rising every day.

Our narrow streets is one of the major stumbling block all over Mangalore that needs focusing for broadening and expanding. How to cope with the expansion in view of the existing old-fashioned infrastructure, we are sure is a major concern for the authorities.

With the over-congested busses and ever-increasing traffic, we truly feel sorry that the senior citizens in Mangalore who have very little scope to move around smoothly because the busses are always full and so also the roads. How do the seniors can move around freely at a reasonable cost is a major concern that always bothers us the most.

Expressing all kinds of negativity does not and will not solve the problems. We need to share our concerns in a positive manner with the authorities so that they listen to our grievances kind heartedly with a spirit of empathy.

India is such a fine country in so many ways of our imagination, but somehow the "supply and demand" concept needs a group effort and group consensus.

Many people in India compare our local mobility problems with that of the Western world. We must always remember that America is a nation that is three times larger than India with a population almost one-fourth of India. Canada is a country more than 3 times the size of India with a population almost one-fortieth of India. These statistical comparisons are shocking but are worthwhile digesting and appreciating. "Dhanyawaadh".

buses stop here and there without prior signal even thou they have to pick up people from stop to stop.. at least let them maintain proper break lights so that the vehicle behind comes to know that the bus is going to stop.. 90% of the buses don have break lights , park lights .. forget abt indicators .. bus drivers don even know they have one.. rto should do strict checking of these things .. its not just during the fc they check.. let them check it on daily basis and impose fine on some ...automatically others too will repair

Mr. RTO, have you ever seen where the buses stop to pick the passengers? They stop the buses where the passengers stand and blame the passengers. If they stop the buses in the bus stops then people will automatically walk up to the bus stops and wait. First instruct bus drivers to stop the buses in the designated bus stops and if they don't cancel the permit of the bus and licence of the driver. Only then talk about building new bus stands. You have no right to waste tax payers' money.

The stretch fro Mangalore Central Railway Station and Nehru Maidan is in a very bad state for the last two decades. The RTO says that this stretch is the property of the Railway Authority and the railway officials say that the road is being used by the public hence the RTO is responsible for its maintenance.
Now the question is: Who came First, the Egg or the Chicken?
I request our local representatives to take initiative and do the and force them to do the needful repair work at the earliest.

People can not live in house which does not have water supply.

Bus stands are not compulsory for vehicles to travel in road. We need bus stands, yes. But road is on priority.
