Daijiworld Media Network – Beltangady (SP)

Beltangady, Jul 9: Two persons from Beltangady, who reportedly were involved with thefts at various places from different districts, were nabbed by the policemen of Chikmagalur district recently. They were brought here on Monday in connection with the investigation.

The arrested men have been identified as Issac from Badyar and Hameed from Maddadka in the taluk.  While Issac operated an auto rickshaw in Guruvayankere, Hameed was already convicted once in a case of theft. It is learnt that during interrogation, these two have revealed about their involvement in over 40 cases of theft spread over three districts.

In April this year, the two allegedly stole Rs 1,500 in cash, apart from oil cans and CCTV camera equipments from K B Malla Petrol Pump in the town which deals in Bharath Petroleum products. It is said that the two always took care to carry away CCTV equipments including the hard discs during the thefts, as they knew their activities get recorded there. They told the policemen that they threw away these equipments at deserted places. They said they were on way to somewhere else, but after seeing the petrol pump while passing through Beltangady, instantly planned to steal things from there.

Most of the venues targetted by them happen to be petrol pumps, shops, and wine shops, the policemen have learnt. Their thefts covered different places in Hassan, Chikmagalur, and Dakshina Kannada districts. After the thefts, they used to change their SIM cards, and had the habit of changing their cell phones often. The policemen, during the inquiry, found 13 SIM cards and phones with one of them. The thieves also revealed they used a Maruti 800 car for their escapades.

A police team comprising Chikmagalur rural circle inspector, Krishnaraj, H R Vishwanath of crime intelligence bureau, and other personnel, had arrested the duo. On Monday the two were brought to the petrol pump they had targetted in April, to get detailed information.
