Wing cdr Darryl Castelino from Kinnigoli dies in Uttarakhand chopper crash

Daijiworld Media Network - Mumbai/Mangalore

Mumbai/Mangalore, Jun 26: The tragic crash of the Mi-17 V5 IAF chopper during rescue mission in flood-hit Uttarakhand on Tuesday June 25, has brought immense grief and pain to a family hailing from Kinnigoli near Mangalore.

The family is that of Darryl Castelino (38), who was the wing commander of the ill-fated chopper.

The chopper crash claimed all 20 lives on board. The chopper crashed due to bad weather while returning from Kedarnath. Among them, five were from Indian Air Force, including Darryl Castelino, six from ITBP and rest from National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

Hailing from Kinnigoli, the family later shifted to Mumbai, where Darryl grew up. Born on November 2, 1975, Darryl was a student of Holy Cross High School, Kurla (W), Mumbai. The family resides in Vakola, Santa Cruz.

Son of the late Herald Castelino and Leena Castelino, Darryl was married to Jyothi and the couple have two children - son Ethan (7) and daughter Angelina (4).

He served the IAF as wing commander and was posted in Kolkata at the time of the tragedy.

A braveheart who was on a mission to provide aid to thousands stranded in Uttarakhand, Darryl leaves behind a family that is finding it hard to come to terms with the irreparable loss.

Darryl's brother-in-law Rony Olivera from Kundapur and others left for Kolkata this morning.

The other persons from IAF who lost their lives in the air crash were Flt Lt K Praveen, Flt Lt Tapan Kapoor, JWO AK Singh and Sgt Sudhakar Yadav. The chopper belonged to a unit from Barrackpore Air Force Station in West Bengal under the Eastern Air Command.

Due to heavy rains in Kedarnath, the body could not be taken to city. Sources said that the mortal remains will be first brought to Dehradun and then sent to Kolkata by Thursday June 27 noon, where the Air Force is getting ready to conduct the final rites with full state honours.

Meanwhile, family sources told daijiworld that arrangements are being made to bring Darryl's mortal remains to Mumbai on Thursday night and conduct the funeral at St Antony' Church, Vakola on Friday evening.

My prayer is that Commander Darryl's life and selfless sacrifice would light the hearts of this generation to have a personal relationship with Daryl's creator- the Lord Jesus. As the apostle paul said, For me to live is life, and die is gain, Cmdr. Darryl can also now boast that having fought the good fight, and run the race, he now has a crown waiting from the Lord Jesus christ. Though sorrow and pain may last, joy comes in the morning.

Though this is an inseperable loss for Darryl, s family and the nation, I pray that his parents and family members will stay their minds on the Lord Jesus and thank God for Darryl's life, just as Job said"God has given, God has taken away, let His name be praised", so be strengthened and be rest assured that Darryl is in a beautiful place with no pain, and hearing his father testify of Him" well done good and faithful servant"

We were cordial classmates in college in Mumbai and his wife is related to me through a cousin by marriage. Though we didn't meet that often, there were always s as a result of Facebook and other sources. It is shocking news and it is difficult to get over it.

Heartfelt condolences to Jyothi, their children, parents and family. Our heart also goes out to the families of the other brave hearts who lost their lives in the same cause. Their hearts beat as one and they all died while on a great mission. Whatever the reasons cited, the magnitude of the disaster that they were fighting against must've been humungous to say the least. May God give their families the strength to cope with this inestimable loss. May God give the Indian Air Force the morale and courage to deal with the incident and move on to serve the country with greater vigour.

Guys lots of messages of condolences and regrets to this great soldier. well appreciated .

But why do we forget them and not even recognise them when they are alive.

My point is felicitate our soldiers whom you know in your locality in appreciating them for taking the responsibility to guard us from enemy or such calamities when they are alive. Make them feel worth their job and role models to many instead of inviting some corrupt politician or a wealthy builder or a goonda presiding over functions etc.

He joined the force for a cause and gave his life for the same. For INDIANS .

His death was a heroic sacrifice as he was sent to save people stranded by floods, and he should be given a hero's funeral by the State. As a we both are members of the Castelino family, it is a tragic loss for all of us too. May his soul rest in peace. Our condolences to his young widow and little children who will miss him for ever! Dear Darryl Bhouji...
You went to save those who were in trouble. Those were your words, when you were on Operation..." I am very much happy to wear my dark green jumper suit and going towards to bring back many lives" and what happened...your precious life only lost. We really salute your dear bhouji...
My heart is weeping and want to reach to Jyoti and to her little tiny children...but I am too helpless...weeping over here...mourning over here...praying for you all very hard...asking God why the hell it happened like this??? where there are zillion peoples are committing sinful acts...raping others, killing others...and for them nothing is happening. And people like you who went to rescue other's life..had to sacrifise...Its really UNFAIR LORD. TOTAL UNFAIR.

I MOURN with you Jyoti...I pray along with you to grand the eternal peace to Darryl...and to give you the strength to move on to live with your children. I pity on Darryl's mother and Jyotis family members...who has to see this tragic of losing such a good person. Dear LORD HELP ALL OF THEM...HELP THOSE WHO WANTS TO HELP OTHERS...Do not give them trouble like this...I GEG OF YOU LORD...
I have no words to explain...if we can feel that much of pain losing Darryl...I am just imagining...how Jyothi and Darryls family members are taking it!!!
GOD!!! YOU SHOULDNT HAVE DONE THIS...PLEASE GRANT THE ETERNAL PEACE ON THOSE DEPARTED SOULS...AMEN.
