Udupi: Incomplete NH work - Heavy rain floods highway, locals left high and dry

Suvarna Brahmavar

Udupi, Jun 6: Just like the bridge in Subrayamanya that submerges due to floods in heavy rain, there is a road in Brahmavar that inundates every time it pours.

The road in question is the stretch of NH 66 that passes by Nirmala School.

One dash of heavy rain is enough to fill the road with knee-high water up to a distance of about 100 metres.

Prior to the work on widening of the highway, the rain water used to flow across the highway and join a stream. However, now, with only one side of the road being built, the water is logged on the other side where work work is yet to be done.

As a result, rain water falling on a large area gets collected on the highway, causing headache for commuters and pedestrians. Locals who pass by this way every day have learnt to be careful, but those from outside get trapped in this pool.

The locals say that everytime this happens, the contractors come and inspect the spot and take up some repair work, but the problem remains unresolved. Despite the same situation arising year after year during the last few monsoons, there is no one to provide any respite, say the locals.

Even though project incharge knows about start of monsoon, he is just not bothered to take care of all these things, which may take life of people......again we people of this region are very calm and wait for political leaders to take action, if they want...since we have voted and it is their job....

Mr. Jossey ,i am afraid in this forum people like you and many others work as agents for Political parties . Reason is you support Congress , Some other support BJP. Why cant we be fair on any issues like this one, for your kind information National Highways comes under Central Govt , State Highways under State Govt and for your information none of them are in good condition means neither BJP is good nor congress only fools are we who follow them.

The flooding is bound to take place as there is no passages for water to flow East to west i.e across the road.
Why wasn't underground pipes laid for water to drain off....I am sure the original plan may have this provision....design fault or deliberate to save money ....

How can a road be completed when the project is full of complications and objections regarding road widening. Eyes open during the rainy season. We want good roads but should be as per our calculations, how can this happen? you can find a best completed highway only from KG Road to Heroor brigge. I don't think so this highway project can be completed.

Even if this govt rules for another 10 years, our MLR-KNDPR stretch can not be completed. And KNDPR-KRWR strech is distance dream

I am telling this full confidence on UPA. Ismail avare, tavu enu helthira?

What can we expect from this useless central govt? I don't know how much time they need still.

Under NDA rule, 1000 KM BLR-PUNE NH was completed in less than 4 years. UPA could not complete half of 90 KM stretch in 3 years. Because they were always busy in CBI, looting, rape, plundering and sleeping..

    Devre kaapaadu....

I agree with you Dinesh. People of India are paying heavy price for rejecting NDA in 2004.

Conclusion: When a Govt is performing good, don't try to experiment. Support them as long as they are performing.

These casualties due to heavy rain in the areas on incomplete NH might have been stoped by proper precaution before monsson sets. This may be the neglegance on the part of concerned contractor and officials.Any improvement or new road work is in progress these type of contigency need to have prior plans and corrective measures.Hope, the department and the contarctor do the needful to keep the public safe.Thanq.
