Bangalore: Woman kept under prolonged house arrest by parents, rescued

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Jun 4: Hemavathi, aged around 30 years, was allegedly kept under house arrest for several years by her own parents at the family home in Malleshwaram in the city. She was rescued, acting on information, and admitted into a hospital by the city police on Tuesday June 4.

State health minister U T Khadar visited the house and issued directions to the officials.

When the police led by deputy commissioner of police, Siddaramappa, brought the lady out of the house, she was too weak to move her limbs. She however, complained of acute pain and hunger. The police are confident of eliciting more information from her once her condition improves.

The neighbours as well as the family members admit that Hemavathi was of good health and had been good at studies till some years back. It is said that the family decided to punish her because of her love affair with a youth which the family did not approve of. Her father, sister-in-law and brother claimed that Hemavathi lost strength in her limbs a few years back, and that they had been providing her medical attention and treatments. They dismissed the house arrest theory, and insisted that the lady was kept at home because of her ailment.

But several neighbours of the lady said that efforts made by a few people in the past to bring her out of the house arrest had proved futile as the family was non-cooperative. Several persons interviewed by a television channel said that the girl was bubbly, healthy, and intelligent, and that since some years she was not seen outside. The family stiffly resisted efforts by others to meet her. They allegedly drove out visitors from near the gate, and did not allow anyone to meet Hemavathi. Some neighbours, who describe Hemavathi’s father to be a sadist, have alleged that the family is now trying to cover up their crime. However, the fact that the family kept others at a distance since long and allowed no one to approach the house, has given rise to doubts.

It is learnt that the only times one got to see the lady was when the family brought her out once in six months for visiting hospital. Some neighbours added that Hemavathi was under pressure, either because of the fact that she was abused by her family members, or because her love life was denied. Some thought the girl was depressed because of not conducting her marriage or not allowing her to work outside. It is said that she used to shout aloud at midnight, but those living around the area have no clue what was going on at the house.

It is Such a Heart Breaking scienario. What a inhumane thing to do with such a poor soul.i dont know where on earth were here neigbours, relatives and freinds, who did not even bother to know about here where abouts.are we talking about aliens here???what a shame for our culture and society that this girl has to go through all this.where are the NGO's who take pictures for every silly event and put it through the print media.I just want to have a very simple answer to my question.it this girl was mentally depressed then why was she not admitted to some hospital or if she was really in love with some one out of her relogion or cast.then where is the hell is the so called lover.why he did not bother to check on her or inform about her being missing for so long.I beleive this lover animal is equally responsible for her fate.Come on guys pls wake up.we have our dignity to uphold.May God Give Strenth and courage to this poor soul.I wish can help her in any way.I love my sisters so much.

A transitional society with too many myths, fears and prejudies to deal with, such as ours, will come across these kind of man eat man kind of situations more often, till it reallises its actual goal. In the name of modernity and privacy we today turn blind eye to too many inhuman incidents around us. Neighbours hardly talk to each other in the IT capital of India. Everybody is suspecious of each other and just want to keep their false status. Hemavathi's parents also need help as it is clear that they are unable to cope up with social engagements. Lets understand their mentality and lets hope that Hemavathi will be able to lead a normal life herewith.

The whole thing comes down to parents affection to the child, knowledge, financial ability, faith, belief in God and destiny. And at the same time child ability and confidence to fight back the odds, struggle for survival that matters most. One has to be selfish and learn to fight back.

My friend and neighbour, who is one year senior to me went thru something like this and even when I see him today while I go on vacation I feel sad but cannot do anything about it.

Twenty five years ago, we were good friends, so I know this much of him for sure, he is a good and popular guy in college, because he was eldest son in the family, and more or less raised by his grandmother, he had access to more money than me and he really enjoyed that money. Immediately after graduation I moved to Bombay and could not come back to my place for 3 years, within this period, I learnt that, he could not get a job in Mangalore of his expectation, slowly and steadily he lost respect in his own family as he was not doing anything. Then there is “kola” and all other religious ceremonies, were held for him to be normal when nothing worked they stopped providing the same care for him, I returned after 3 years, I had a discussion with his current status, his answer is not getting a good job even after being a second class B.com. I too was not doing great in Bombay in spite of being a first class B.com, but Bombay provides opportunities I moved to gulf. When I returned after 2 years, I was told he was admitted to the mental hospital and given an electric shock and other medications. Since then he is not normal.when I meet him now, his hands tremble and he struggles to stand straight, however he remembers our old times and blames his family for becoming what he is today, for his family it is destiny.

However having seen the world in my eyes, today I feel that a little more care, affection, support and knowledge could have brought better result.

We the society have the responsibility to act when we see somebody around us in distress. I want the youth of the society to turn a Whistle Blower whenever they smell a rat around them.
The men folk don't mind doing any rubbish in the society but when the turn comes of their women folk, they apply all taboos to them.
It is high time to bring a change against the female gender in our society or an 'Arab Spring' like situation is inevitable.
