Beltangady: Inspiring - Bereft of hands, Sabita Monis votes with leg

Daijiworld Media Network – Beltangady (SP)

Beltangady, May 6: On a day when a large number of able-bodied voters decided to stay away from polling booths rather than exercising their right to vote and support democracy, a woman who has no hands, came to the polling booth and used her toes to vote for the candidate of her choice.

The incident occurred on Sunday May 5 at Pandangady in the taluk.

Sabita Monis from Padangady Gardady, is employed at Alva’s College Moodbidri. Although the officers on poll duty were instructed to apply indelible ink to the ring finger of the voter’s left hand, the officials had to make an exception in Sabita’s case. They applied ink on her toe in place of finger.

Sabita had completed her education by using her legs in place of hands, and has been on par with the able-bodies persons in everything she does.

Absence of hands has never dampened her spirits, and her determination to vote in the election definitely conveyed a clear message to the people who stayed home out of inertia and failed to be a part of the election process.

My hats off to Sabita Moniz. you are true to your name you are real monis (human. Thanks to Daiji world who have given real life to many. Many times we have to be pity on some people. who are there to follow rule. having no conscience.Law is for the people and not the people for the Law. There are always exceptions to the Law and the natural law over rules every thing and that even the jungle law has its own exception. How ever hungry and a Lion be but it will kill its prey only by chasing it and never kills any sleeping or standing animal with out chasing it though the lion is considered as a king of jungles. so what a shame on the said officer to apply ink on the toe of Sabita Law never say to apply ink on the leg nor it say it should be applied on the part of the body which casts vote. and that too asking that Sabita to lift her leg. i am sure that officer should be recommended to Arjuna award. My hats off to Bai Sabita God Jesus bless you abonduntly. Goa bless you too.

Shame on those people who stayed in their particular region but did not vote. I would have got up from my seat to apply indelible ink on her toe instead of troubling her to keep her leg on the Polling Officer’s table had I performed the duty of a Polling Officer in that Booth. I have no hesitation to touch her foot with great respect if people like her respects the value of democracy like Sabita shown.

Dear Mr. Shetty, I am pleased to read your comments and it sounded more like a patriotic feeling of a citizen of this country. Yes I too would have bent down and applied the ink to her toe as you rightly pointed out. I am sure if each one of us, could have the spirit like this, I am sure our country would have been a top notch performer in the world today and our Indian citizens would have commanded enormous respect worldwide.

    Well said.
The same thought occured to me as to why did the polling officer not get up from his seat and bend down to apply the ink especially considering the fact that a woman's respect/dignity should be preserved.

Alternatively, the woman polling officer sitting there could have been asked to apply the ink.
