Zardari seeks report on molested women in Libya

Islamabad, Mar 31 (IANS): Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has sought a report on the molestation of women of Pakistani-origin in Libya, a government spokesperson said.

The activists, two of whom are sisters, were reportedly participating in an aid convoy bound for Gaza that intended to try to break the Israeli blockade, Xinhua reported.

President Zardari has expressed serious concern over the molestation reports and called for a report from the concerned ministry, said Farhatullah Babar, spokesperson to President Zardari.

He wants details of the steps being taken to alleviate the sufferings of the unfortunate victims, the spokesperson added.

The women were travelling with two male companions when they were kidnapped Tuesday, as they were on their way to Benghazi airport in Libya after deciding to return to Britain, said Awad al-Barassi, Libya's deputy prime minister who visited the women in hospital.

Their 10-vehicle convoy had been carrying medical supplies and was named the "Mavi Marmara" in honour of a ship involved in a 2010 deadly flotilla incident, according to a Turkish humanitarian relief organisation.

The accused belonging to the Libyan forces had been arrested, British media reported.
