Indians vote like cattle: Markandey Katju

New Delhi, Mar 30 (IANS): India is not a full-fledged democracy as 90 percent of its people vote like sheep and cattle, Press Council of India chairman Justice Markandey Katju said here Saturday.

Speaking to TV channel Headlines Today, Katju said: "Ninety percent Indians vote in droves like sheep and cattle. They are like a herd of cattle voting along caste and religious lines."

"Because Indians vote like livestock, there are so many criminals in parliament," he added.

The former Supreme Court judge said that he would not vote as India was being run by leaders elected on the basis of their caste, which is not the true form of democracy.

"I won't vote because my vote is meaningless. Votes are cast in the name of Jats, Muslims, Yadavs or Harijans. Democracy is not meant to be run like this. Why should I waste my time in joining the cattle queue?" he said.

Boasting of his secular credentials, Katju said that he was against communal forces and "by being secular, if I am branded a Congressman, you are entitled to your view".

Katju has been in news for seeking a pardon for actor Sanjay Dutt and Zaibunnisa Kazi, charged with illegal possession of arms in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case by the Supreme Court.

Katju has argued that Dutt stacked the weapons for self defence and to protect his family from the threats that they were getting in the aftermath of the Babri demolition.

"Sanjay Dutt is a shattered man. He has suffered enough but he has reformed," he said.

Katju said that he was prepared to seek pardons for other stars, Saif Ali Khan and Salman Khan, who have been charged for killing endangered blackbucks in Jodhpur.

"I will study their cases and if I am satisfied that I should speak out, I will surely plead their case," he said.

Accused of being hungry for publicity, the former judge said that "seeking publicity is a form of vulgarity". He added that he never chases controversy but what can he do if controversy chases him.

He also mocked Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal and his former associate Anna Hazare, saying that corruption was a "malaise which cannot be eradicated in the next 20 years".

"This campaign is like the tale told by an idiot signifying nothing. There's no morality code in the country, so corruption cannot be wiped out," Katju said.

Excellent comment Reshmi. The only way to correct all ills is by reforming election process. No criminals or people of dubious reputation or of communal inclinations should be allowed to contest elections.

But Mr. Katju at least got the guts to speak. It may be a beginning.

Seeking pardon for Sanjay Dutt and Zaibunnisa notwithstanding, Katju does speak sense most of the time. It does not take a genius to find the root cause of today's political fiasco and rise of communal forces - CONGRESS. Had they given us good governance, words like poverty, illiteracy, crime, communalism, etc. would have been alien to India. Instead, they marginalised people and deprived large sections of people of education so that they can loot the country - which they, along with other political parties, are still doing in broad daylight. And we the people - by electing them - have given the stick and the authority to them to beat us.

What ever Justice Katju has said is fully true, truth is very hard to digest. Just by saying these slogans will not help, more over he states that he will not cast the vote, which I feel like ignoring the sense of duty. He should talk about solutions to this, as per me even 5 decades were not enough to get literacy to the people. We Indians are only good in bed, that also 90% of the people under influence. Educate the masses the problem will be solved, not HI FI speeches. About corruption his talk is in very bad taste to come from a highly literate person, may be he has a vision that after 20 year's we can erradicate corruption, until then we can promote corruption. It's rather surprising to see Mr. Sharath being not able to understand caste system in India.

If 80% had voted on caste & religion only BJP would have been ruling India not some family. Its our fortunate that majority is voting wisely, thats why all the partys are surviving, else if we had gone according to some communities who blindly vote even if a donkey stands in that party, then we would have been ruled only by Cattle by now.
If we have to buy your argument then am sure there is some problem in the demographic situation of our country and re-surevy/census has to be done to know who is majority & who is minoirty in the country.

Ted..what is the use of giving big speeches? Speeches are given just for the sake of publicity. If he tries to improve the system then it would be good. Just by giving speeches, doesn't serve any purpose. Intellectuals like Katju who have similar views must join together for improving our system. It may be governance, legal or voting or any other field. If he does so, then only we can appreciate his speech.

Though I had strong reservations on Justice Katju's statement calling 90% Indians as Idiots and also his support for actor Sanjay Dutt who is convicted by the Supreme Court for unlawful acts, but in this report he seems to have made a valid point.

It is a fact that when it comes to electing representatives to our State Assemblies and our Parliament, majority of us do not appear to make wise and independent decisions. We follow the herd. No wonder there are criminals, illiterates, goons, questionable characters and the corrupt among our leaders.

In the coming elections, let us make a difference by checking the credentials of the candidates and the political parties before casting our valuable votes. We are a secular & democratic nation and so we should refrain from casting our valuable vote on religion, cast and sectarian lines.

Justice Katju is absolutely right in saying 90% of people go to the polls vote like cattle. If this truth is hard to hear and digest then please explain how so many criminals who should have been behind bars are elected to parliament and have become lawmakers.

A poll by BBC 15 days after elections on those who had voted resulted in the following results:
    - 80% of people cast their vote for candidates strictly on caste and religious lines and 20 % voted for those whom they thought would give them what they wanted if they won the elections.
    - 98% did not know anything about their candidates of their choice, and they have absolutely no idea of the party’s manifesto. There are so many pressing issues that Indians face but what was a major political issue, one party promised to rebuild the temple and the other said they would oppose it.

As regards Sanjay Dutt I disagree with him being granted pardon, as it was proven in court that he had strong links with the underworld. He willfully provided logistics for carrying out the attacks that lead to the death of tens of hundreds of people and justice should be served.

Let him come out with all the judgements he delivered, how long he took to deliver it etc. Let him try to get amnesty to thousands of nameless "criminals" who are suffering in jails for many years without a trial. Why support celebrities only? To get more publicity?
He does not want to vote! Most ridiculous statement. Remember that the cattle grade voters voted out Indira Gandhi in 1977, Rajiv Gandhi in 1989 and Vajpayee in 2004. Can you really call them fools?
