Mangalore: Police raid rehabilitation centre, owner accused of ill-treatment

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Feb 4: In yet another raid, police in a late night operation on Sunday February 3 swooped down on a rehabilitation centre at Mission Compound road, Nanthoor.

The raid was jointly conducted by the Kadri police and officials of the women and child welfare department at Ashraya rehabilitation centre owned by Upendra Naik, based on complaints by the public.

It is said that Upendra Naik allegedly assaulted a girl who had tried to jump over the wall of the centre and escape. A neighbour who noticed this called the police who rushed to the spot along with the officials of the women and child welafe department.

Inmates alleged that Upendra Nayak has been regularly abusing and ill-treating them, and not given them enough to eat or drink.

The residents of Mission Compound in their complaint have alleged that at around 8.45 am today, a girl  out of the compound wall of Ashraya Rehabilitation Centre located in their locality and ran away. Allegedly, the neighbours followed her, but before the locals could make enquiries with the girl, the managing trustee of the centre, Upendra S Naik, forcibly took away the girl in his vehicle.

The complainants said upon following up the issue and further questioning, the girl revealed that the above official used to mentally torture her regularly, by denuding her, and that she had chosen to escape from the centre for this reason.

The citizens said that a good looking girl had run away from this centre about a year back and that the police had visited the spot and issued warning to the people operating the rehabilitation centre then. They claim that when they had asked the policemen to register a complaint then, they were told to furnish proof by way of video clips.

The signatories to the complaint have urged the police to make discreet enquiries as to how this centre procured a licence to run its activities, and also to provide the inmates of the centre relief from the mental torture being inflicted there.

The 22 inmates at the centre include both men and women, and some of them do not even recall how they came to be there.

The inmates were later shifted to Wenlock hospital.

It is good the action of police is really worth for society. They have to make more raids like this. But one thing, it is very well clear that Hindu outfit only behind the young girls always instead why can't they trace out such malpractices in the society and bring to surface so that many downtroden/ill treated aged people will be benifited or ill treated students in the hostels.

I have in the past and am once again appealing to DW with their vast outreach to get from all the various authorities the authorized approved list of rehab centres, homes for the aged, mental rehab centres, beggars homes, destitute homes, street children's shelters, etc which can be put on their website so that one does not land up at unauthorised or suspect places.
I read "Suresh" case and he is the only one with a genuine (I believe) experience of the present centre in his own father's case over the last 10 years that has taken him into poverty due to the heavy financial burden.

    Dear Mr.Jeevan,
People often talk about non-existent conversions. People often talk about threat from minorities to majority. But the fact is that both are far from truth. If conversions were taking place as alleged by you, all Indians would have been Christians/Muslims by now. Are they? Contrarily, the percentage of Christians is declining. When some organization helps old and helpless people, appreciate their service to the society. Who knows, one day you may be in need of their help.

Fantastic job by neighbours. They informed the right authorities at the right time.Such rehabilitation centres run with or without liscense collect huge donations in the name of these destitutes besides fat amounts paid by their dear ones. These inmates are not properly taken care of. Any visitors come they get very scared to answer the questions coz they know the tortures they have to face later. Surprising! How come our so called social activists beedies did not raid these centres? I think the R.centre is prompt in hafta payments or could be this Upendra Nayak belongs to one of such organizations.Hope at least hereafter these inmates will have a peaceful and better living.

For those who argue about conversions...If any one is forced to convert on a gun point or under the sword like it happened in the history then we really need to worry in the modern world ,Other than that any other type should be left to the individuals as long as they are mature adults..Even if some one gets converted for some financial or other benefits who are we to point a finger at them..If we can we should help them in their need and prevent them from changing religion..Who knows next time when they face any problems they will convert to other religion which helps them..they just use religion to get monetory benefits..why other citizens should waste their time and energy..Just by increasing the number any religion does not become good it is by quality of life which we lead inspired by religion which counts..

Moreover, why from 1947 ? Why not before that ? Do you know the origin of your own religion ? Lets discuss from the time the Moguls, Aryans, British, Dutch and others invaded - what do you think ? Lets carry the proof with us that the Tribal who are actually are said to have been converted to various religions were originally Hindus. Lets discuss why despite being Hindus low caste (lets say Mahar of Maharashtra) needed to convert to Buddhism. Lets discuss why Basavanna had to create a separate sect called Lingayat. Lets discuss Guru Rajneesh who had millions of followers form the West.

FRIENDS, THERE IS NO ANY PERSON IN MANGALORE WHO WAS TAKING CARE OF MENTAL OR BED RIDDEN PEOPLE OTHER THAN UPENDRA NAIK.
Well, We live in a rental house in mangalore Just to take care of my Father who was mentally ill Since 2003. We are from reputed family.
Just because of his Psychiatric problems,we lost value in our community. He was responding for the tratments
till 2010. He spent almost 2 years in different hospitals in Mangalore. We had not admitted him to KMC,SCS Etc.
But nowhere he was recovered. When his condition worsened we tried to admit him to any of rehabilitation centers in mangalore.
None of center was ready to take care of him.
When we saw a advt. in Daily paper about this Upendra naik's Ashraya. We approached him and requested to take care of him. He agreed.
NO ONE HELPED US EITHER FROM GOVT. SIDE OR FROM OUR COMMUNITY. We were poor due to his mental illness. I know i have to take care but i was helpless.
We checked many days as he was allowing us to go inside his center. He was treating good. He had his center in Mangaladevi which was attacked before,
but after scrutinizing, the police realized his good work and didnt take any action against him. Now the police and women care peoples admitted to Wenlok Hospital.
Who will take care of them in future ? Peoples of mangalore attacking this type of centers only for selling their adjacent properties for high rates.

It's really heart wrenching to see the inmates of this so called 'Rehabilitation Centre'. Such aged and uncared for people
too of late have become a 'means to exploit' for making 'easy money'. People with notorious and questionable backgrounds seem to be running the 'show' in most cases. Opening an NGO and minting money in the name of these helpless people has become the latest 'in thing'. The people running these 'shows' hardly seem to take care for their 'own elders'- forget the rest! The kind of atmosphere we are living with regards to such 'rehab centres' is really sickening- The
'powers' that be behind these centres need 'counselling' at the outset!

He must have done wrong things, which I don't know but photograph above tells a different story, the patients look old, needy and helpless to whom Mr. Naik has done something good to the society which even our Govt Hospitals don't do... that's Caring to the sick and needy...
I request the court to look at the noble cause which he has been doing before he is punished...

Do not think that BD's are unaware of this! Jesus said: Whatever you did for the least of my brothers and sisters, you did for Me. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.

    TG, I agree with you.

I visit some institutes, that I benefited from, who do charitable works. I hear that they live day and night in fear because anytime a group barges in and demands to produce documents.

Shame - this is our society that we blame is succumbing to western culture. In-fact, we are succumbing to animal culture !

Good job by DK Police to rescue the poor and shifting them to Wenlock Hospital. It is also necessary to rehabilitate this crazy Upendra inside Jail bars to restore his mental capabilities.

By the look of the inmates of the rehabilitation Centre they really appear they are in need of good care. In case Mr. Uppendra Nayak truly ill treats these helpless people he needs to be taken to task. Or else if it is an occasional stray episode like this needs to be ignored. Because the inmates do not look they are fit to give accurate information. Such complaints always need to be taken with a pinch of caution. Those who do this type of humanitarian work know how hard it is to attend on them and satisfy them 'cauz their mood fluctuates very frequently. This type of Mission requires lots of patience, kindness and sacrifice.Let us encourage those who undertake this type of humanitarian work and give our assistance rather than making their already difficult task more difficult. Once again I reiterate that if Mr. Uppendar Nayak and the staff of the Ashraya rehabilitation Centre are guilty and violent human rights please take them to task. But none of us have any right to attack and be violent. I can see a man bleeding is he Mr. Uppendra Nayak? Do we have right attack and injure the accused?
