Udupi, Dec 12: Rajya Sabha MP and Congress leader Oscar Fernandes on Wednesday December 12 visited the house of Jacintha Saldanha, the UK-based nurse from Mangalore/Shirva who allegedly committed suicide in London last week following a prank call.

Oscar Fernandes met the family and expressed his condolonces on their loss.

Speaking to reporters later, he said that as per the British law, the family of the deceased person could see the body only after the post mortem was done. "Accordingly, Jacintha's husband and children have been allowed to see the body as the post mortem has now been done."

"The mortal remains will be brought to India from England in the next three or four days," he added.

"I have come here to console the family. The family is in agony and extreme sorrow. They need peace and consolation," he said.

Oscar's wife Blossom Fernandes, former minister Vasanth Salian, Suresh Shetty Gurme, M A Ghafoor, Sarasu Bangera, Naveen J Shetty, Prakash Shetty, Conrad Castelino, Ignatius D'Souza, Veronica Cornelio, Naveen N Shetty, Harish Kini, Abdul Aziz and others were present.

Meanwhile, sources said that the Indian High Commission in London is in touch with Jacintha's husband and is helping him in bringing her body back to India.

According to external affairs ministry sources, her husband Benedict Barboza has told the Indian High Commission that he would like the body to be sent back home to Mangalore.

"Our mission is in touch with the husband of Saldanha and is assisting in smooth completion of various formalities involved in it," the source said.

Saldanha fell prey to a hoax call from Australian radio jockeys about the Duchess of Cambridge's pregnancy.

Saldanha, 46, a mother of two, was found unconscious Dec 7 in the quarters of the King Edward VII Hospital in central London where she was working as a senior nurse. She was pronounced dead in a hospital.

Two radio jockeys from Sydney radio station had called up the hospital Dec 4.

Jacintha picked up the call in the absence of the receptionist and transferred it to another duty nurse who briefed the two RJs on the health condition of the Duchess of Cambridge (Kate Middleton), who was admitted to the hospital Dec 3 after she complained of acute morning sickness.

News about the hoax call shocked the royal family and caused outrage the world over, especially in the British media.

According to Jacintha's brother Naveen Saldhana, the family is waiting for the arrival of the body in Mangalore, with Benedict and his two children Junal, 16, and Lisha, 14, for the last rites that will be performed at Shirva as per the Catholic tradition.

Why dont you talk to Sonia Or Manmohahan or Khurshid and take up this issue strongly with UK Foreign ministry and police ?. I know nothing is going to happen but atleast you can create a scare within Uk authorities for future .You see sonia everyday perhaps but i dont think you even utter a word regdg welfare of your own people even by mistake . Your visit to the family is just not sufficient and just a normal act .You should be doing something really more politically which could help the cause of expatriats.

When we visit a funeral house we should wear sober coloured outfits / shirts. The best is white & black or something similar. Wearing bright colours ( like red / dark green with loads of jewellery etc ) is giving disrespect to the deceased person as well as to the family members. A funeral house is not a fashion show arena. We should be modest and not wear party type of clothes & jewellery. This has been taught to us by our elders. Lets continue with that for those 2-3 hours during the funeral.

Whatever you said in defense of Mr. Oscar is right Valerian. Peoples wants/expectations/tastes are unlimited and varied.
If something good is done, some people say good about it, some will speak against it.
But an individual has limitations, can not please everyone at all times.
Matured people have experienced the same in their life, therefore will try look good in others and appreciate the same and encourage them to do well and grow.

Some people would say where is Oscar ? Is it not his duty to visit when there is grave crisis!
If he visit, some would say, he visited for votes.
If he take camera some would say it is for Publicity
If he doesn't take camera, some would say, some thing is secret, why has he not taken camera?
Some would say, he could visit him/her why not them ?
So Oscarji, don't worry, Just do what best you can and leave the rest to fate. No one can satisfy everyone!

You are absolutely right. Any politician, target his/her vote bank. The things outside vote bank is irrelevant to them.

I wonder where Oscar is otherwise. Why did he take so much trouble to travel so far away from Mangalore to Shirva. Guess this is just nothing but acting as all political leaders are good in that. But surprise of surprise, as mentioned by Dinesh Salian, Kudroli, Mangalore that he saw Blossom awful in tears .. was it crocodile tears? One wouldn't know. I think the house of Jacintha was closed probably because Oscar made a back-door-entry.

Nice to read Oscar came to Mangalore to pay his condolences to Jacintha's family and Moily pressed Foreign Minister to take further action in this case. When I contacted these two individuals when a Goan lady died in US jail, they had no courtesey even to reply to my e-mail - which I sent twice. One thing I learned in my life - where there is huge publicity there are people show up to show their concern!
