Why Girls, Women Go Missing? Manjula Has Answers

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network

Bangalore, Dec 4: Ever wondered why large number of young girls and women go missing?
Well, Karnataka State Women’s Commission Chief C Manjula has the answers.

According to a 110-page report submitted by Manjula to Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister R Ashok, who is also in charge of Home and Transport Departments, love affairs, torture by husbands and in-laws, poor academic performance and even poverty are the major reasons for young girls and women going missing from their homes.

The Commission suggested establishing a central monitoring agency to handle cases of missing women and girls.

It said monitoring cells should be set up at all bus and railway stations with the help of police to curb pimps from approaching vulnerable girls at these points.

The report said as many as 14,989 girls and boys were found missing in the State from 2009 till September 2011.

Of these 14,989 missing cases that were registered, as many as 6,950 cases of missing girls and boys were traced while 8,039 cases remained untraced.

The State Women’s Commission Chairperson C Manjula submitted the report titled “Issues and concerns of missing girls in Karnataka – case study of Mysore district (Mysore City)” to Ashok in Bangalore on Monday.

Govt Asked to Set Up Monitoring Cell

She urged the State Government to set up a monitoring cell at all bus-stands and railway stations with the help of police to avoid the movements and picking up vulnerable girls by anti-social elements.

The Commission, which was asked by the government to study the reasons for a large number of girls and women going missing from Mysore, recommended making moral education mandatory for students

It also emphasised the role of Information and Communication Technology to combat the menace of girls and women going missing, kidnapping or immoral trafficking.

As many as 100 cases of missing girls were taken for a comprehensive study in 16 police stations Mysore City.

In Mysore City alone, 1,612 girls and boys were found missing from 2009 till November 2011.

``Most of Girls Are Educated”

The study report prepared by Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, University of Mysore, Mysore, noted that majority of missing girls had studied up to SSLC, PUC and with a fair sprinkling of graduates.

“Educated missing girls often run away from home,” the report said pointing out that ``illiteracy is not a reason but ignorance of consequence is the most common factor.”
The report said few parents of businessmen and government employees harassed their daughters for poor performance in their studies which forced them to take up the extreme step of running away from home.

The study covering girls in the age group of 12 and 30 years, observed that majority of girls were found to be running away from home due to negligence by family, especially in bigger families.

The study noted that 38 per cent of the girls went missing on account of torture by their husbands and in-laws while 36 per cent did due to love affairs.

Other factors for girls running away from homes are: family negligence (4 per cent), media (5 per cent), illness (2 per cent), pressure on academic performance (5 per cent) and other reasons (10 per cent).

Behaviour of Husbands, In-Laws is Another Major Reason

Ms Manjula said majority of women were missing due to torture by their husbands, who treated them badly or due to alcoholism or irresponsible behaviour of husbands.
“Some of them ran away with other man who they feel is good and shows concern to her,” the report said.

Educated girls from good families go missing due to love affairs with boys other communities and parents object to their marriages.

In some cases, girls with poor economic conditions run away to other states such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala assuming that they would be better off in those states, the report said.

Girls going missing from schools and colleges were generally found to be victims of infatuations and fall in love.

In majority of cases parents never lodge complaints with the police, the report said.
“Railway stations, bus-stands and cinema places are good places for anti-social elements to scout vulnerable girls,” the report said suggesting that they would lure these helpless girls into prostitution.

    Dear All
We donot require any cell or organisation for this job. We would request all the parents to love your kids as much as possible. In case of working parents try to spend your evening time with your kids. Take them out and be with them. They will not go out in search of love. As as parent when we donot give time for our kids then they try to find this love and affection from out . Infact they will fall in wrong hands. wake up parents. love your kids as much as possible. Try to avoid fights in front of kids. Pray everyday. I am sure almighty will bless you and your kids. When we put prayer in our kids mind then they will think twice before they do anything else.

Mr Sachidanand, I dont agree with your comments. Love does not happen looking at the caste first. It happens between two individuals who are attracted to each other. We find rogue romeo's in every community. Not just Muslims or Christians. But that doesnt mean there are no good people in Hindu, Muslim or Christian community. Everyone have thier good and bad. So to blame two religions in the society is nothing but cheap publicity.
You say christian girls are educated and kept inside the houses safetly. And your girls are being lured by our boys. You must educate them not to be trapped by such lurements then. Save your own roof before you throw stones at someone's house.
You dont know the facts, Christian, Muslim and Hindu girls or boys dont go to schools and colleges and make friends asking caste first.
I dont even know you. But your comments are absurb. Living in a metropolitan city like Abudhabi, has not helped you to look at the larger picture.
I love all relegions and my best of friends come from the hindu and Muslim community. So dont make emotional comments but make sensible ones.

Where is Karnataka Men Comission ? , problems like torture of husbands from wives , increasing suiccides of married men should also be highlighted ( check the recent toi survey ). Mis use of dowry harrasement law like 498 A by husbands in laws be taken care off ! , why don't urge central govt to pass SIMA ( Saving men from intimate terror act ). All over state mahila organisation like 'stree shakti ' , 'mahila shakti' r very active and often break families in disguise of women empowerment , so why not have men rights groups also in rural areas?. Last not least ..... Why girls go missing. Major chunk of its due to love affairs. They know once their parents come to know about affair , they will harrass and put some case against bf. So they run and comeback , only when tummy inflates......!.

Unlike other States in India, I think we have to appreciate Karnataka Government for at least they have some report to comment and look in to the root cause of the problem. No doubt people must have to behave properly with their Partner and more over people should also educate their elder Parents to treat the women with dignity too so that we can solve the two problems of misdeed by “Husbands & In-Laws” at home only. Third one being biggest problem in outside atmosphere, lured by fake lovers, love Jihadist as well as Pimps are to be dealt with the help of community only. Like you take the example of Muslim Girls being most protected by their family in the name of culture by not sending outside even some time for primary education too and Christians Girls are almost all are educated than compare to others and more protected by their Community Services too. But the real problem is for back ward Hindu Girls since they do not have that much restriction to go outside freely but lured by none other than Muslim or Christian Boys most of the time and trying to abscond from their houses whereby inviting trouble forever in their life. We do not blame other community for missing Hindu Girls, but same time we request other community to teach or preach your male members too not to lure girls from other communities and elope with them like you teach your own girls not to get interaction with boys from other communities. These kinds of problem created by us and we only have to solve it rather than blaming any Organization

Unquote. Everybody knows that these are the reasons for missing boys and girls but find out the solution and those are happy in their homes definitely they will not run from their homes. When population swells obviously missing numbers will swell as well. Government nominated you to find out the solutions for these things but not to submit report only.

Why not old ladies and old men ? Obviously and mainly for use them in illicit business.
There are dubious characters in society who befriend them, lure them and then traffic them to exploit.
Police, excise /revenue officials with the help of informers can surely track and rehabilitate them from dubious bars, parlours and prostitute dens. Award very strict punishment to traffickers.

Missing girls or boys, women or men, the reasons are same. The educated people outnumber the uneducated in these acts. There should be a one hour class every week to the students from class 3, counseling the children for any behavioural problems. These days, as small as 9 years olds also run away from the houses. Before monitoring, understanding the problems is most necessary.
