Bangalore, Nov 17: In order to ensure that the Medical Council of India’s forthcoming visits to the Government Medical Colleges in Karnataka does not create any problems due to the lack of staff, the State Government has decided to appoint as many as 3,500 teaching and non-teaching staff to 10 Government Medical Colleges in the State soon.

The decision to fill up the vacancies in the medical colleges has been taken in keeping with the MCI norms, Karnataka Medical Education Minister S A Ramdas said on Saturday.

Ramdas said the Government has permitted the medical colleges to take immediate steps for recruitment of the teaching and non-teaching staff to the medical colleges.

About 21 professors, 26 associate professors, 26 assistant professors, would be recruited in the teaching faculty along with filling up of non-teaching staff vacancies in 10 medical colleges.

In Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute alone, there was need for appointment of 1000 non-teaching staff, including 600 staff nurses, 156 technicians, Group C and D posts.
The entire recruitment process would be completed shortly, the minister said.

Decision has also been taken to provide the facility of MRI and CT scan in all the medical colleges, he said adding that there was need for such equipments in eight medical colleges, he said.

To bring in uniformity in the rules and regulations of all 10 autonomous medical colleges, it has been decided to implement the common bye-laws in all colleges.

All the directors have participated at a meeting held recently to finalise common bye-laws, he said.

Take-Over OPEC Funded Raichur Hospital

Ramdas said the State Government has also decided to take over OPEC funded Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Super Speciality Hospital of Raichur from December 1, 2012.

The former director of National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore, Dr Nagaraja, has been appointed as director of Dharwad Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (DIMHANS).

Dr Nagaraja was relieved from NIMHANS on November 16 and would take charge as the director DIMHANS on Monday.

It has been proposed to upgrade DIMHANS to the level of NIMHANS, Bangalore. Initially facilities for neurology and neurosurgery facilities would be given though KIMS, Hubli, though an agreement.

The minister said four Bangalore-based private medical colleges have indulged in gross irregularities in the admission of students for the academic years in 2011-12 and 2012-13.

Admission Irregularities in 4 Colleges

The colleges indulged in admission irregularities are Raja Rajeswari Medical College, MVJ Medical College, Vydehi Medical College and Saptagiri Medical and Research Institute.

The Saptagiri Medical and Research Institute, Chikkasandra, Bangalore, had indulged in gross irregularities in admission of students for medical course in 2011-12 and the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, has been instructed not to approve admission made by institute.

The chairman of the one-man committee, which was set up to monitor admissions in medical, dental and engineering colleges, completed inspection of three institutions – Raja Rajeswari Medical College, MVJ Medical College and Research Hospital and Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre.

“The committee has found numerous irregulartieis in these colleges and show-cause notices are being served to all these institutions,” the minister said.

The panel has monitored the admission process in Saptagiri Medical and Research Institute, which is a religious minority institute, and found several irregularities in the admission process, he said.

He said admission process from rank number 1106 to 1421 for 2011-12, all the candidates had secured 90 per cent marks.

“As it is a religious minority institution for Kodava community, the admission of 66 per cent of Kodava admission should be for Kodava community. But there is only one Kodava student for total of 150 admissions,” he minister said.

“This is a gross irregularity. In this context the government has issued a notice to the institution on November 6,” he said adding: ``The State Government is contemplating to initiate legal action against the institution.”
