Being Ordained Without Training Unacceptable: Bishops' Council on 'Rev Mallya'

Media Release

Bangalore, Jun 26: On behalf of the Karnataka Region Catholic Bishops' Council, Fr Ronnie Prabhu has issued a media release in the wake of the announcement by Sidhartha Mallya, son of liquor baron Vijay Mallya, that he has been certified an ordained priest by the Universal Life Church.

The release states:

"The announcement by Sidhartha Vijay Mallya that he is now Rev Mallya has caught the attention of the worldwide media.

This implies that according to the media he has become a member of the Universal Life Church and has been ordained a minister in that organization.

The Catholic Church rejoices when anyone from the depths of his heart accepts Jesus Christ in faith and is committed to live by the values that Jesus taught. If becoming a member of the Universal Life Church implies this we are happy about it.

For the Catholic Church, ‘being ordained a minister’ without any meaningful formal training, without a deep study of the Scriptures and traditions of Christianity is unacceptable since an ordained minister is expected to live an exemplary life worthy of his calling, as the community seeks from him guidance and invocation of prayerful blessings from God on them.

The Church was founded by Jesus Christ two thousand years ago and has a history and its tradition. New groups originating in our times calling themselves by the same title “Church’ can be very misleading.

Priest and pastor are two different terms used by 2 different divisions of Christianity.the Catholics refer to their spiritual guides as priests who are ordained after 9-14 years of study. A pastor is self proclaimed and only few attend bible colleges and are ordained.today pastors are a dime a dozen with anyone with a bible under his/ her arm claiming to be a pastor not even truly knowing WHO wrote the 1 st gospel....Ashok

Rev. Mallya was ordained by the original Universal Life Church in California USA. He is an ordained Minister not a priest. Most "churches" such as the Catholic Church require that priests study to learn their churches doctrine while we at the Universal Life Church believe you are free to choose your own doctrine and method of worship. You are free to believe and worship like a Catholic, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh or none of the above. We ordain all those that ask free of any monetary cost. While Peter and his associates tried very hard that night to catch the fishes, they caught nothing. JESUS came to that location and asked Peter to make use of the boat as a podium for a few hours Peter was greatly delighted to loan the boat while going through a mental disappointment of "wasted night".
After the teaching season was over with, JESUS told Peter to cast the net to one specific location, and they got the biggest catch of their lifetime. JESUS told Peter and the rest to follow HIM and and totally changed them as "fishermen of men".

Who made all these traditions down through the centuries? They are added in each century by the human beings. What kind of
certificate of training those fishermen and tax collectors had,
who did turn the world upside down? JESUS CHRIST is living today, HE can transform human beings-HE can give peace and joy that the world and the material things can't offer. HE LOVES THE WHOLE HUMANITY AND DIED FOR THE SINS OF THE WORLD.

Jesus Christ, the enlightened soul, did not preach 'Christianity'or any relegion, he preached 'humanity' which is difficult even now for most to swallow. The 'Church' followed Christ, that's about it. To limit enlightened souls like Christ, Krishna, the learned Prophet to founders of 'religions' is the worst possible crime ever, repeated time and again by mankind.Do not try to 'decipher'their sayings to suit your needs, there are very simple .It's not their fault if we find it 'difficult' to understand!

Sachidanand Shetty there is a lot of difference between converting to Christianity and becoming a priest.
A person needs to practice Christianity almost 10-14 years to become a priest. There is only one GOD now a days and 99% of the persons on this planet worship it ie MONEY. Going to church, temples and Mosque and offering prayers is all Lip Service and nothing else.

Strange to know Siddarth Mallya has been certified an ordained priest by the Universal Life Church.

As far as my knowledge goes, one should be first of all knowledgeable of the religion for which he/she should read and understand bible. He should then, most importantly, bring faith in the Christianity and paractise the faith. Without all these religious rituals, how can he be a priest?

Further, the few reasons for the downfall of UB group and KF airlines could be the flamboyant lifestyle of both father and son, like 18 cr worth apartment gift for Deepika (according to media)by Siddarth and urge of Sr. Mallya for the pretty and young models under the guise of KF calendars. He remembers God only when he wants to win IPL or surge from the KF debts. Anyway, I wish good luck to the airline company because thousands of people have their shares in it out their hard earned money.

Br, Micheal or Fr. Micheal has no sense in explanation. If is real ordained priest and undergone is real training he would not express his feeling. This man must be frustrated with his community and joined this new group and trying to mislead the flock. There were many groups have risen and perished. because there were proper training and firm foundation.

There may be now new institutions created by this groups to obtain the diploma and graduation certificated issued for the ordinations, which is baseless. Mr./REv.Sidarth Mally has no back groud of the basic needs of the priesthood. He is the liquor barron. Probably he will do his publicity of liquor brands. Whoever baptised by his liquor his surname will be the liquor brand.Over the church in the early days there were many stormes were hit and tried to collapse, but it is stands still with It's faith. And still the various types of winds will blow from various directions. God bless the flock and lead to proper direction.

“The Church or certificates are not a symbol of power but service, and democratic laws must be apply to it equally…Their should be a conference to debate the matter of bringing Church properties under each state laws.Church properties in Goa are governed by laws enacted during Portuguese regime but the same laws have long since been repealed in Portugal.Hindu temples are governed by laws specifically enacted for each trust and their accounts are subject to judicial review. The Sikhs, one of the smallest religious groups in the country, have the Sikh Gurudwara Act. Muslim trust properties comes under the Wakf Act.Almost all other religions in India have laws enacted to administer their properties they why not us to stop this type of self governing in church's should be stopped.

After all both are from same community in origin. Its’ also shows how biased Christian Priests are. They welcome people from any community to get converted to Christianity but not as Priest. N. Frank, India/Ksa, This is kind of statement from Catholic board is need of an hour. Even in Catholic there are innocent and uneducated people. They should be aware the different groups within community. And even Hindus and Muslims should know this. For the best example just read comments from Mahendra Shetty and Dinesh Poojari, Dr. S.Kamath in the list. There are more than 50% population in K'taka.

Now again, I am denying or supporting Universal Church or Mr. Junior Mallya here. Its none of my business. But ONE CAN NOT CONVERT TO CATHOLIC or PRIEST in our community. And THERE IS DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CATHOLICS and OTHER GROUPS. These 2 messages are very important to spread.

Dear readers, I guess these days faith of many people has become vanity, people misleading others in the name of one God,I too read the Bible and Love Jesus. His teachings are mind opener.Bible never talks about any religion as a link to God.As history is divided in the name of Jesus like B.C AND A.D. i think Jesus and his Power and Love shown to the mankind still rules our hearts. Sure indeed Jesus is the only son of God who came for love and Died on the cross to take our punishment. And in him is salvation of Mankind and there is no one beside him who can give us peace and Heaven after we die if we simply believe in Jesus.

As per Mallya. I guess he is fooling around with spirit of God andMay be in coming days we will know his Destiny for Blaspheme.Sometime people learn sad and heavy lessons by looking at others mistakes. So just wait and watch.Let God do his work

In some of the western countries churches running out of money for maintanance. One good example is Australia They use church only for marriage and other ceremonies. They will be very happy if some one sponsoring them or renting their place. There is a Saibaba temple in melbourne which use to be a church and prayer hall for so called christians. They sold it because they couldn't maintain it. It was bought by hindus and made it has temple. Aussies don't care about religion. Only Indians do that and fight among themselves. Dear Fr. Ronnie Prabhu, are you using diplomacy here ? Your statement has created a bit of unnecessary confusion. I wish you had put it in simple words clarifying to the laymen like me that Mr. Mallya does not belong to Catholic faith. Why did you have to rejoice about this news since we do not know that Universal Life Church follows Jesus’ teachings 100%. And we also do not know if he (Mr. Mallya) has accepted Jesus Christ in faith from the depths of his heart. The statement should have been worded like this:

“The Karnataka Region Catholic Bishops' Council wishes to make it clear to the whole world that Mr. Sidhartha Mallya has not been ordained as minister by the Catholic Church. His announcement of becoming a certified priest has nothing to do with the Catholic Church.

Further, for the Catholic Church, ‘being ordained a minister’ without any meaningful formal training, without a deep study of the Scriptures and traditions of Christianity is unacceptable which Mr. Mallya has not gone through.

We understand there are many organization names with the ‘Church’ attached to them. But none of them is Catholic except the Catholic Church headed by The Karnataka Region Catholic Bishops' Council regionally and by the Pope Benedict globally”

In fact we should be happy about it, and help him to become a good minister.

Instead of making nonsensicle public statements against Rev. Mallya, the concerned catholic leadership should have taken up the matter directly with Universal Life Church, and asked them to nullify the appoint of Rev Mallya as a ordained priest, if according to the catholics his ordination was unacceptable, or unlawful.

Mallaya junior is still very much a junior and I am sure will mature with age, as he needs gods grace badly to salvage his sinking ship.

I don't know why are all people creating a scene about this. It looks like the people who have commented here have never read the bible. In every part of the bible God chose the most unexpected and unusual people for his work. Peter was a fisherman, Paul was a soldier, Luke was a doctor, Mary of Magdalene was a prostitute. What Jesus wants to show us is that he can choose anyone for his work who so ever is willing to work for him. It doesn't matter about our past or background... God can choose any to serve him. We have to be happy that one man is saved than to make ridiculous comments here. We have to pray that more of youngsters give their life to Christ and serve him.

Why this fuss? As I understand, this sect has nothing to do with Christianity or any other religion.Their goal is to attract a lot of rich people and make a lot of money just as the "church" of scientology does. Every country has crooks which exploit rich people who are easy targets, in the name of some religion of their own.

Rightly Said, Fr. Prabhu. I think people need to be educated about the difference between Roman Catholic Church and the other (thousands of them) churches. The roman chatholics being the most visible christians in Karnataka, bear the brunt because of the misdeeds of the other (so called) churches.

We all know the saying - Stars don't stumble down because dogs bark at them. Dear Rev. Mallya your father remembered God only when his liquor empire collapsed on him and only at that time he remebered God and came begging to Kollur temple for heavenly intervention. What a pity, his son has become a self ordained priest. Atleast now can we expect a miracle from so called Rev. Mallya to save his dad and his most famous Kingfisher from..........? God save the Rev. and Sr. Mallya.

I don't think, the title Rev. or RT. Rev. make any person Holy or make any difference unless the person is committed to lead a selfless life for the society he is living in.

My name is Brother Michael, I am the President of The Universal Life Church World Headquarters http://www.ulcnetwork.com , I am an ordained Catholic Priest and have been appointed to the position of Bishop within the Catholic Church. It is at my discretion to ordain either as a Non-Denominational Minister or as a Catholic Priest. I assure you ordinations by us are every bit as valid and are faith based, no different than Pope Benedict 16th himself. It is not your place or any Bishop Council to look to pass judgment on the ordinations and/or validity thereof by any other other faith based Religious Organization. While there may be imposter Universal Life Churches, let us not forget who the Catholic Church derived its name from. Catholic comes from Universal, a Greek Adjective meaning katholikos. It is the first name of the Roman Church. Before sounding off and knocking others education, I suggest you do a little research.

This is well said by Fr. Ronnie Prabhu. In Catholic Church there are certain procedures to become a priest, which should be strictly followed. Now a days there are many these kind of so-called Universal Churches around the world which are misleading the people about the catholic faith and the whole community gets effected. With these kind of statements, the non catholics who are unaware about the religion and how it works will have a wrong notion about Catholic Churches/religion.
