Mangalore, May 29:
As reported earlier by Daijiworld, the unfortunate death of MESCOM Gerald Veigas of Thokur village has put his family in total distress. Gerald who was on duty on Saturday May 12 was checking for faults in Vamanjoor area as there was no power. He fixed two jumpers and while he was fixing the third one, electricity suddenly passed through the wire and he got electrocuted.

Addressing reporters here on Tuesday May 29, Denis D’Silva, state convener of International Federation of Karnataka Christian Associations (IFKCA), alleged that branch officer of Vamanjoor feeder Gurumurthy took lineman Gerald Veigas and Shanthakumar to repair the fault in Vamanjoor without taking the permission of Kavoor branch officer or assistant chief executive engineer. They were forcibly made to work, he said.

"Also, during the repair work, Gerald was not provided with any safety equipment. After the work when GOS in Mangalajyothi was started, electricity passed on the wire and Gerald was electrocuted. At this crucial time too, Gurumurthy did not even extend first aid to Gerald and did not admit him to the hospital. Instead he fled from the spot," Denis alleged.

"However, in a baseless statement given to the media, Mangalore Division chief executive engineer Manjappa said an employee of one branch could be made to work in another. This statement was to safeguard Gurumurthy," he said.

Denis said the death of Gerald was equal to that of murder. "Though the kin of the deceased family filed a complaint with the police, Gurumurthy has not been arrested yet," he said.

He also demanded that Gurumurthy and Manjappa be suspended and MESCOM help the children of Gerald in their education.

"In case no police action is initiated, the family of Gerald, public and some social unions will lay siege to MESCOM in the coming days to deman justice," he warned.

IFKCA, Udupi president Louis Lobo, Gerald's mother Lathesia Veigas, wife Zeena Veigas, and cousin Darvin were present at the press meet.

It is surprised to learn that Why no action has been initiated against d erring officials of MESCOM.Further on the day of funeral the MD and other officials of MESCOM have not bothered to visit and to pay homage to the deceased employee. This suspects thea the top officials too are mingled in this incident. So hw can anybody expect any justice from MESCOM. A CBI enquiry needs to be conducted in this matter

I dont know much about Gurumurty. This Mr. Manjappa is really a arrogant person. He speaks utter nonsense when people go to meet him.   He needs to be suspended.

I doubt he will get suspended. Since he has influence from top. He may do anything for his survival.

Persononell of MESCOM are no less than Goondas. Their language is not polite and they enter houses without permission and start yelling without any reason as if they are doing some charity providing electricity.

This is the much needed backup help for a very justified and needy case from IFKCA to the aggreived family! This is the right time to mount pressure and get the guilty to justice before these "goons" make it fizzle out and wriggle out. Nothing more than criminal charges should be filed against those responsible. MESCOM CAN BE BROUGHT TO ITS KNEES IF THE POWER OF TRUTH AND POWER OF UNITY OF PEOPLE ARE UNLEASHED!!!Remember how British Petroleum and multibillion dollar co. was bought to its knees and went bankrupt by a couple of suits filed after the underwater oil leakage, then what this MESCOM is! Be focused and keep on pressing the gas pedal and things will be in line with the truth!!!!

If a person dies in an accident in a private factory, in spite of providing sufficient safety measures, the owner of the factory is taken to task. Even if the workman is neglegant and irresponsible, the owner is made to go through hell for no fault of his. Here the owner is the MESCOm management which should be held fully accountable. The management staff should be first arrested for neglegance and criminal case should be filed. Then come the other measures like how to provide the compensation and how to preven repeatation of such incidences. Unless this is insisted upon, more number of Geralds will die on everyday basis. The story will be forgotten in no time.
We have unions fighting for stupid reasons like rickshaw stands, petrol price hike etc. But on such humanitatian crimes, only a small bunch of people have to face the reality.

It's high time that MESCOM authorities stop the blame-game and deliver justice to the bereaved family of Gerald Veigas by suitably compensating them monetarily and punish the responsible officials. Appreciate IFKCA for their sincere efforts in seeking justice to the victim's family.
