Mangalore-Mumbai Bus Meets with Accident at Ankola - Four Dead

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Oct 15: Ankola police have now confirmed that four passengers on the ill-fated Mangalore-Mumbai VRL private bus that met with an accident on Friday October 14 night, have been killed.

Initial reports suggested that seven passengers were feared dead in the accident that occured on a bridge about 12 km away from Ankola in Uttara Kannada district on Friday, at around 10.15 pm.

Three of the deceased are 10-year-old Rajith and 7-year-old Rishitha, both children of Jayaram from Mulky, and 23-year-old Kumari Shraddha Umesh from Mumbai.

The bus departed from Mangalore at 1 pm and was on its way to Mumbai via Moodbidri and Karkala.

The accident took place near Kodlugadde on Ankola-Yellapur road on national highway 63. The cause of the accident has not yet been ascertained. It is suspected that the bus might have hit the protective wall of the bridge, however, another source said that a lorry plying from the opposite direction hit the bus.

There were 37 passengers in the bus. Initial reports stated that four of them died on the spot, while other three breathed their last on the way to hospital. A few of them who fell into the river managed to swim to safety, it is learnt.

Police sources said that several have been injured, and that the condition of at least five of them is critical.

The injured have been shifted to Yellapur and Hubli hospitals. A few who survived the accident, walked along some distance and managed to call the police and emergency services. No mobile network is available at the spot of the accident.

The locals also helped in the rescue mission. The accident led to traffic snarls for some time.

Police rushed to the spot and rescue operations are on.

The names of the deceased and the injured are not immediately available.

Its really unfortunate to lose lives .And there is no point in blaming drivers for this .It could have been me or my family also ,as we also take this bus from mumbai to mangalore.

But what is more sad is that even though these buses are ultra safe from the outside in terms of absorbing impacts and other features, most injuries happen because people are thrown around in the event of a crash. And seat belts can prevent this .The same buses sold outside india have seat belts for all passengers ,but here in India ,we hardly see one .Its time ,we have laws in place that make these safety measures compulsory ! And its wrong to blame drivers .It is also the duty of passengers to stop drivers if they are driving rash ,than wait for a big accident to happen !

It is not the bus driver or the owner wanting the people in the bus to die the bus is a very big investment and only few people can manage this business.Kindly correct your self.

Really sad news. While boarding the ill fated bus in mangalore, the passengers must not have had faintest idea of what was awaiting them. reckless and negligent driving lead to such accidents and the sufferers are the common man who get stuck up in isolated places with no help coming for hours. very sorry for the dead and hope the injured recover soon.

It is indeed sad and tragic. May the souls of the departed, rest in peace and may the injured recover soon.
If it was the 1PM bus Via Moodbidri and Karkal, it is VRL. I just travelled by that bus on Sunday. Usually, the drivers are well trained and quite safe in their driving etiquette. I guess the truck could have been at fault as everyone knows, at night the truck drivers go off to sleep leaving the cleaner at the wheel. Thorough investigation needs to be made in this regard.

Extermely sorry for the departed soul. Bus acccident always reminds me of one incident, when I was travelling from Udupi to Brahmavar by local bus.Driver was drunk and bus was jam packed.Though it was local bus,it was flying like a jet.Bus driver lost control near Uppoor bridge. It hit mile stones and fell down after the bridge(luckily).6-7 feet down.Three people were dead.I was taken to Manipal hospital with fractured nose, and wrist along with 50 other patients.Actually I was discharged from hospital for minor surgery and coming back to Brahavar. Now re-admitted to same hospital, same ward, same bed ! History repeats ! 23 years back..Nostalgia..

    VERY VERY SAD NEWS.

THERE IS NO GUARANTEE OF REACHING HOME OR DESTINATION SAFELY.

NOWADAYS ACCIDENTS ARE HAPPENNING @ HIGHER RATES.

BUS DRIVER, BUS OWNERS SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ACCIDENT.

RECKLESS DRIVING & NON MAINTAINANCE OF VEHICLE ARE THE ROOT CAUSE IN MAJORITY CASES OF ACCIDENT .
