Udupi: Dalits' Conversion to Buddhism Adds No Benefits to Status – Pejavar Swamiji

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)

Udupi, May 24: “In my opinion, becoming Buddhists will not offer any added benefits for the dalits. If we exclude the dalits, the population of Buddhists in India is meagre. Hence, I don’t foresee any marked shift in the state of affairs of dalits after they change their religion. They will continue as they are now,” felt Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji of Pejavar Mutt.

He was reacting to a programme being organized by Dalit Sangharsh Samiti in association with other organizations here on May 24, in which over 2,000 dalits are scheduled to desert Hinduism and embrace Buddhism.

“What do you get out of this conversion, as far as the issue of untouchability is concerned? This will destroy the dalit culture that has come through tradition, which will be a loss for the dalits,” he opined.

He said he does not mind the dalits joining Buddhism, as it is a part of Hinduism. He added that he welcomes the dalits becoming Buddhists instead of getting converted into Christianity, Islam, etc, in the interests of nationality and Hinduism. He observed that aspects like worship of idols, belief systems about sin and good virtues (Punya), heaven and hell, rebirth etc, which the intellectuals refer to as superstitions, exist in Buddhism too. The Swamiji offered to ordain the dalits into Bhaktiism (devotional path) or Vaishnavism (devotion to Lord Vishnu) under two different categories, one in which there are no strictures except the chanting of hymns, and the other, in which they are barred from consuming liquor and non-vegetarian food. In the first category, they will be equal to any other Hindu, while in the other, they will get elevated positions. In both cases, they will be able to get rid of untouchability tag, he analyzed.

He invited those who want to get this Deeksha, to inform the manager, Sri Pejavar Mutt, Vijayadhwaja Mandir, Udupi, to enable the Mutt to fix a suitable date for their admission into these sects under Hinduism.

Dear Mr. Ramesh, Udupi. I have no reason to comment with someone else's identity. This is my real name and I am a hindu. I am proud to be a hindu but I am a progressive and broad minded hindu. For me no religion is superior or inferior. For me all religions are equal and I give utmost importance to communal harmony. This narrow minded and fanatic religious thinking is no good for anybody especially in a secular country like ours.

With due respect to dear Swamiji I would like to say: Please refrain from giving provocative statements especially in these sensitive times. Instead use your high and respectable status in society to bring about communal harmony and peace between all communities. This way people of all communities and religions will continue to love and respect you even more.

Religion is very much personal, if someone make business out of it, can't help it ? I visit lot of  areas countries were Buddhism is a major religion, people practice it with devotion and great purity, countries like china, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam and even Singapore.

For your kind information, Buddhism is not a religion, Buddhism is way of life, WHERE THERE IS NO CONCEPT OF GOD, like all other major religions. Buddhism did not define the God, they says, good thought, good deed and good Acts is Buddhism, do your best not think for the result. help the needy and feel for their pain and agony. Buddhism was and is this not accepted by the Hindu society that is the reason Buddhism was/is wiped out from the land of it origination.

They are very much very different than Hinduism. Gotham Buddha is a not God nor messenger of God, he was philosopher, guide and teacher who shown the world is greed is the cause of all the human suffering.
It was never part of Hinduism.

The honorable Pejavar Swamiji: Those people didn't leave Hinduism
    and embraced Buddhism for changing
their status. They may have the same social status now,
but now they are in a
    different horizon of total freedom
atleast in their worship in a
    new religious setting.

Conversions are a very sensitive issue in India.
    It creates heat and passion.
Dalits decided to convert into Buddhism.
It is their own decision and wish.
    It shall be respected.
No one knows whether they will find a better life.

Ashok Dubai says, its better to become Buddist instead of getting converted into Christianity, Islam, etc…can you explain who ask you people to convert ? Do you mean to prove that Buddism is superior? It’s the people like you created a situation where these people had to wait outside temples and had to eat on leaves and clean the floor by cowdung at your verandas .
It is a perfect decision by the Dalits as of now they have all freedom at Buddhist temples. The Swamiji's comments are too late now ,he should have worked on this earlier instead of attending state sponsored events. The people here are not worried of they joining Buddhism but more worried of to whom they will vote hereafter.

    Dear Swamiji,
    With due repect:
    1. GOD made man, man made religion.
    2. All are human beings and humanity comes first.
    3. It is one's personal belief, faith, devotion towards
GOD and not just getting rid of dalit tag.
    4. Very sad even now you are talking about untouchability and dalits and getting rid of dalit tag.
    5. This had come up only after 2000 hindus crossed over to buddism.....?

Wah, another theory to suit the need and timings... Adige biddaroo moogu mele... In buddhism there is no caste system, if there is no caste, then any buddhist is a buddhist. We can only call a rich or poor buddhist. But no way we can call a shudra buddhist or aryan buddhist... We can read from the article that dalits are being called to embrace hinduism by adminsitering deeksha. After getting the sermons, can they officiate the rituals in mutts and temples??? Will they be allowed inside the holy sanctum of mutts and temples??/ Do they have to remove their footwears in front of aryans homes??/ Do they have to take a humiliating posture when talking to aryans??? Do they have to scream "ayya" "ayya" when talking to aryans?? Can they eat in the same row along with aryans?? Will aryans drink from the pots carried by these dalits? Lots of questions need to be answered. From the observations one can make out that this seer has lots of venom in him against muslims and christians. Are they not Indians like him? Are they not human beings like him. This devide and rule policy must be stopped. The varna system itself is a indegenously found devide and rule policy. Its worst than the britishs political divide and rule policy. Dalits please get up. U r the original inhabitants of our great nation... Fight four rights and u will and shall prevail. Dont allow just 5% of our population to dominate and rule over you. March forward..

Swamiji you are 100% right. In the interest of nationality and Hinduism, its better to become Buddist instead of getting converted into Christianity, Islam, etc. We all should respect the culture & tradition of our land. Our culture & tradition was not started by Shri Shri Pejavar Swamiji or any political party. It is our history. So we can not blame anyone. Thanks to Swamiji & all Hindu organization for the changes made in our religion according to the current situation.

If Swamiji is concerned about number of Hindus in India or abroad, he should not be worried, becuase hindus will increase in number for more than a century in future. India will have another billion added in another 50 years. so why worry? But I do not agree that Dalits do not gain anything by becoming Buddhists, because in Buddhism no such thing as caste system whereas in Hindusim it is strong and prevailing. Doddanna

Appears to be worried with deserting acts of dalits. By embrasing to Buddhism, his community will be untouchable. Look at his arrogance. He does not have problem in conversion but does not want to give equal status of Brahmins. Surprising is to see the invention of two more castes Bhaktiism or Vaishavism may be imported from some other planet. Dear Sadu.. first learn to value Humanism and accept all the mankind as equals if you got some wisdom as you being swami. Have you noticed nowadays many from upper castes including Brahmins are converted to Chirstians.. What do you say on this.
