Mangalore: After Polls, It’s Now Betting Season in Udupi, DK Constituencies
Daijiworld Media Network—Mangalore (RS/CN)

Mangalore, May 6: The elections are over and now it is time for the wagers to begin. The enthusiasm to know the fate of the various political candidates in the twin constituencies of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi has translated into frenzied betting in the region.

Mostly supporters of the two leading parties of the region—Congress and BJP—are placing the wagers.

Millions of rupees are believed to be involved in the betting game in the two constituencies. In Dakshina Kannada, the odds favour Congress candidate B Janardhana Poojary while in Udupi, BJP candidate D V Sadananda Gowda is slated to win.

Bets have been placed in amounts upwards of Rs 25,000 with the highest being over Rs 10 lac.

Though there have been no clear indications of how the voters might have cast their franchise, bets are being placed based on rumors, poll turnout, the so-called wave, and popularity of candidates.

In both areas, people are interested only in placing bets on BJP and Congress candidates. In Dakshina Kannada, veteran leader Poojary has gained recognition through his work in the constituency as union minister while his primary opponent Nalin Kumar Kateel is counting on the popularity wave of the BJP.

Gowda, is the party’s state president and has significant support in Udupi while Hedge is also well-known.

“I am sure that  Janardhana Poojary is going to win and he will be the MP from Dakshina Kannada”, said  Nithyananda, a  member  of the Billava  community who is a former BJP worker but now supports Poojary. He has placed a bet with for Rs 25,000 to this effect.

However, BJP activists are confident that Nalin Kumar will win in Dakshina Kannada.

“The BJP is ruling in the state and the wave supporting the party will help him win”, said Anand, a BJP worker, who adds that the poll turnout in Puttur and Sullia exceeded expectations and both areas are well-known strongholds of the BJP. He has also placed a bet for Rs 25,000.

All places where even a handful of people gather soon turn into venues for political discussions with focus on what the results of polling will be.

Anil, a BJP worker from Udupi, said that he had placed a wager with Suresh, a shopkeeper, for Rs 50,000 that Gowda would win the constituency.

Meanwhile, Ahmed Iqbal, a businessman, predicts that Hegde will win. He claims that   Hegde is more powerful than Gowda and says that the people of Udupi are familiar with the good work done by Hegde.

Interestingly, when the results are announced on Saturday May 16, the fates of many besides the candidates will be decided !

Mr.Shareef Moideen,Shahnawaz, Donfrank - Here are the results of karnataka. Yesterday I have dream. Most of the Daiji readers are too much upset due to onceagin BJP is forming government. BJP will have 16-18 seats, Congress will have 8-10 seats and JD's only 2-4 seats. Major losers will be Margaret Alva, Veerapa Moily and Bangarappa. In Mangalore chances of win Poojary and in Udipi of S.Gawda. My dream never goes fail/wrong.. it's afterall like prophecy. samjahe kya nasamjahe..

Mr. Nagessh Nayak, stop day dreaming. Wait till 16th. Mr. Advani will not be the PM. It will be Mr. Man Mohan Singh. Mr. Rahul Gandhi is a straight forward person, who is appreciating the good work done by the opponents of Congress. But BJP leaders never appreciate the good work done by Congress and UPA. Congress is better than BJP. JAI HO.
