Mangalore: Heavy Voter Turnout - Who is the Beneficiary ?
Political Correspondent - Daijiworld Media Network

May 3, 2009

When the country as a whole and Karnataka in particular has recorded low voter turn out in the elections held recently, with  a poll percentage of 74.44% Dakshina Kannada parliamentary constituency has created a record of sort registering highest percentage in the history of this  parliamentary constituency and that of the state for all times.  Mangalore is again creating news, this time for all the right reasons.  It goes to prove that political consciousness runs high among Mangaloreans who have exercised their democratic rights in the right earnest.

The best ever voter turn out so far in this constituency in the elections held recently bettering the previous best of 73.66% recorded in 1998, has led to speculations among supporters of the major political parties in the fray.  While political parties are quick to welcome this  trend of people participating in the democratic process in a big way, hectic political parleys are being conducted by political parties to assess the situation following the heavy voter turnout to know who is going to be the beneficiary.

CHANGED POLITICAL SCENARIO

The speculation stems from the trend witnessed during the polling held on April 30 and the details of the assembly-wise percentage of polling available. Assembly constituencies like Mangalore and Mangalore North which are considered to be strongholds of Congress recorded an impressive voter turn out of 74.61% and 72.23% respectively. Bantwal, another Congress citadel also polled 77,63% votes.  Similarly BJP bastions like Sullia assembly segment reported 80.12%, the highest in the state, closely followed by other BJP strongholds Puttur with 78.47% and Belthangady recording 72.66%.  Comparatively Congress strongholds like Moodbidri and Mangalore South recorded a slight lower turnout of 71.2% and 68.26% polling respectively.

This was the first elections conducted at the backdrop of the church attack of last year and the widely publicized pub attack and undoubtedly this was an elections issue at least in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi-Chikmagalur constituencies.  Political awareness has always been high among the people in this constituency and it is well-known that both these incidents and the frequent incidents of communal violence have antagonized the two major minority communities who form a sizeable chunk of voters.   Naturally, the Congress sensed the mood of the people here and fielded Janardhana Poojary, who it thought is the best bet to take on the might of the BJP.

Concerted efforts were made by rival political parties and politically conscious citizens coaxing people to come and vote in large numbers in the charged and changed political atmosphere of the district. The minorities identified themselves with the Congress in the changed political scenario which might have prompted them to come out and show their collective strength, resulting in high percentage of voting.

Similarly, speculation was rife that following the consolidation of minority and Billava in favour of the Congress its candidate Janardhana Poojary stood a fairly good chance of winning in Mangalore giving a chance for the Congress to bounce back after a gap of 18 years. Janardhana Poojary prevented the consolidation of Billava votes when he patched up with another Billava leader Vinaya Kumar Sorake who was all set to join the BJP. The weak candidature of BJP’s Nalin Kumar Kateel further bolstered the spirits of the Congress party with the warring parties coming together burying their differences and fighting with the single most object of defeating its arch rival BJP.

HARD WORK PAYS OFF

On the other hand the negative reports for BJP proved to be a blessing as the party began working with a renewed vigour and single minded devotion of accomplishing the mission on hand. The party took it as a challenge and its strong cadre base proved to be its strength. This was very much evident as its fortresses Sullia and Puttur recorded high percentage of voting which must have been due to the strenuous work of the party karyakartas.  The party cadres must have really sweated it out in persuading people to exercise their right to vote resulting in people queuing up to vote.   The hard work on the part of BJP necessitated as the party had lost its stronghold Kodagu to Mysore after delimitation and it wanted to compensate the loss by encouraging more voters to cast their votes.

Contrary to the trends noticed in other parts of the state the youth in the districts have exercised their votes in fairly large numbers.  The claim of the major political parties that youth are with them in these elections has also added to the speculation as to whom the luck favours. Traditionally it is believed that youth are identified with the BJP.  But the circumstances of the past one year have kept everyone in guessing which side the youth have swung their affinity to.

THE THIRD FACTOR

While independent candidate Ram Bhat might take a small percentage of votes believed to be that of BJP, CPI (M) candidates B Madhava is believed to have garnered at least some percentage of votes otherwise believed to be that of the Congress.  Rumours were rife that Congress had paid Ram Bhat 10 lakhs to play the spoilsport which might have further encouraged the Sangh Parivar to work doubly hard to ensure the victory of its candidate.

Incidentally both Mangalore and Udupi districts have shown good voter turn out in all the elections held so far.  When most of the districts struggle to go beyond the 60% mark Mangalore has crossed the 70% mark for the 9th time in the 15 general elections held so far.  Thrice it recorded above 64% and only twice it went below the 60% mark recording 52.38% in the second general elections held in 1957 and 59.64% in the elections held in 1991.  No doubt the coastal belt has set a good precedent for other district to follow when it comes to participating in the democratic process in the true spirit.

Ever since the high voters turn out is reported both the Congress and the BJP are claiming that high voter turn out may finally prove beneficial to them.  Even as the EVMs are kept under tight security in the guarded premises of Canara Pre-university College in Kodialbail, speculations and guessing goes on in different quarters giving myriad variations to the existing theories.  Everybody is waiting with baited breath for the D-day, May 16, which may put an end to all theories and rumours doing the rounds.  Till then it is just a wait and watch game.

It is nice to know that even BJP supporters concede that Mr. Poojary is a nice man. I am not here to defend congress because I do not belong to any party. However it is known fact that who were busy in money making business and Mr Yedyurappa's govt. has broken all the records in that count even though they are in power only for few months.

Instead of concentrating on development they are busy distributing tax payer's money to Matts and temples. In this election money has flowed like water and BJP distributed money for buying votes. Even with this, they will not get more than 12 seats in Karnataka. It is Manmohan magic which was successful in bringing down the inflation to less than 1% when it touched all time high because of economic meltdown world over.

It has become fashion for BJP people to blame congress for everything including the communal voilence and moral policing in Mangalore. People are watching and in this election they have voted decisively and for the first time most educated people have found that Congress as better option and they are tired of communalisation of politics by BJP. Advani tried to attack Mr. Manmohan as weak Prime Minister but backtracked when Manmohan questioned his credentials.

This made even common man to think.. "what Mr. Advani has done to this country?". He has done nothing except dividing this country on communal lines. Mangalore had MPs belonging to congress and BJP and surely Mr. Poojary remains a mark above others for his good work and clean image. So in comparison, which party is better.. congress or BJP? And in candidates who is better Mr. Poojary or others? On both counts it will be Mr. Poojary this time.

Dear Mr. Raj – Mangalore, No matter which party comes to power, India will never improve. Politicians are politicians once they are in power they will see where they can make money. At the end of the day, … “India will never improve” even this time for sure. The only problem with BJP is, they are narrow-minded and use religion as an agenda to win elections.

They have already made enough damage to the minority community and they will continue in the future. The only difference is if congress is in power the Govt. “might” take some immediate action and if BJP is in power, the Govt. will “never” take any action. How much of damage will happen in future depends on who is in power.

I know that poojary is a nice man..but sorry to tell you that he is representing a party that had failed to do enough development. They are busy with thier money making business and concentrating less on development. The inflation is touched a all time high and everything has become so very high. Even the self assessment tax which has been increased is all by congress and to blame BJP is rubbish. It was brought in by congress during the governor's rule.

Also the national highway project which has been ongoing in the last 3,4 yrs on the way from kottara to surathkal.. comes under the central government. Dear friend people might love poojary... but they have become more clear with which party is more favouring. Ultimately it is the livelihood that is more important than the person whom they love, that matters to the people. So this time it is BJP...... FOR SURE

Dear Nagesh Nayak, Train from Mangalore to Bangalore was not Sadananda Gowda's contribution. This railway was existing but only changed to Broad guage now. Even as Rajya Sabha MP, Mr. Poojary has worked very hard including the speedy implementation of this railaway line. We mangaloreans would like to know how many sessions Mr. Gowda has attended in the parliament.

For your information Mangalore is well connected by railway to Mumbai, Delhi, Kerala, Madras, Ahmedabad etc. Please update your information. As regards roads, what is Mr. Sadananda Gowda's contribution? Why BJP has not done anything in last two decades? How Mr. Sadananda Gowda has spent his MP funds? or if he has misused by giving to Sangh establishments.

Except for BJP activists every common man in Mangalore wishes that Mr. Poojary should win the elections and represent them. Every common man says it will be Poojary this time.... People adore him even today... Same thing can not be said about any BJP MPs who represented Mangalore before....

Dear Nagesh Nayak, I am surprised with your comments. You have asked what Poojary has done for last 60 years? But my friend last 20 years there were BJP MPs representing Mangalore. Please let me know what they have done except making money. Sadananda Gowda run away from mangalore because he has done nothing.

As far as Janardhana Poojary is concerned he was a proud MP of ours who has raised Mangalore voice in Parliament and also responsible for growth of mangalore including MRPL, Upgrading of airport and the list goes on. Moreover educated youths are with congress this time and not BJP. Higher turnout will help Congress in all means. BJP always plays with emotions of people and this time it failed miserably even in this ploy and nobody believes them now.

I foresee throwing away the Yeddy Govt., once LS results are out. He swore in Farmers' name, and his job now is to evict all the landholders from their lands, be it in the undivided SK or now lately for constructing townships through NICE contractors.

Certainly it is advantage Congress. Simple arthmatic-muslims 5 lakhs & Christians 3 lakhs. Solid 5.5 lakhs votes might have gone to Congress. Same holds good for Udupi also.

The winning margin of bjp/congress is the difference in votes of rama bhat and madhava.i.e.if rama bhat gets more than madhava then congress will win and if madhava gets more than rama bhat then bjp will win,and by losing the elections no politician is going to bite the dust, but the people who are emotionally charged will.

Whatever the peoples verdict, but what is certain is, it is between Tablebanized BJP, which is energized with money power, corruption, admistrative control, false propaganda as against sleepy congress, which is plagued with corruption, weak & divided local organization structure. The people certainly going to vote for the lesser evil. Therefore, need to wait till may 16th when the results are declared. Hope the parties make necessary changes in their policies & actions to be true to their idealogies.

People were fed up with communal politics and have come out in large numbers to vote decisively against the communalisation and moral policing. D.K. has been and will always be the heart of Quality Education and Quality Health now proved that it has quality in Voting.

The Whole of India should learn from D.K. It is a Shame on Mumbai citizens that inspite of the 26/11 they preferred to sit at home and enjoy the Holiday. All that Candle lighting after 26/11 was only a Farce. It is time the People of Mumbai learn from D.K. and Learn to change. Just making money and living in comforts is not life.
