Exclusive analysis and interviews by Daijiworld team led by Walter Nandalike - Editor-in-chief
April 28, 2009
The erstwhile Udupi constituency has been named Udupi/Chickmagalur Lok Sabha constituency after delimitation. It comprises four assembly constituencies from coastal and four from some parts of Malnad region and is considered to be the biggest constituency in Karnataka spreading over stretch of about 400 kms. It is a high profile constituency as BJP state President D V Sadananda Gowda is facing the challenge from Congress candidate, three-time MLA K Jayaprakash Hegde. The CPI’s Radha Sundaresh is the third front candidate in this constituency and could play the spoilsport particularly for the Congress. There is a BSP candidate and a few independents that may not have much of an impact on the final outcome.
DUAL CHARACTERISTICS
The constituency has 4 assembly segments namely Kaup, Udupi, Karkala and Kundapura from Udupi and Sringeri, Mudigere, Chikmagalur and Tarikere assembly constituencies from Chickmagalur District. As a result the constituency has acquired dual characteristics after delimitation to mach with the communal politics of the coastal area with that of the caste equations of Malnad region. There are about 12 lakh voters comprising a heady mix of SC/STs, Billavas, Vokkaligas, Lingayats, Bunts and minorities. If one goes by the caste equations in the Malnad, it is certainly tilted in favor of the saffron party.
It is a completely saffronised belt considering the fact that BJP had a clean sweep winning 7 of the 8 assembly constituencies coming under it in 2008 elections having unexpectedly lost Karkala to the Congress. Political pundits have predicted it to be a safe seat to the BJP as the lotus party has spread its tentacles deep and wide both in the erstwhile Udupi and the Malnad region coming under this constituency. Incidentally BJP candidates I M Jayarama Shetty and Manorama Madhwaraj who won in 1998 and 2004 respectively are with the Congress now.
In some parts of this constituency naxal threat is looming large and it is a major challenge for the political parties and the election commission to encourage people to cast their ballots without fear.
SADANAND GOWDA CHOOSES A SAFE HAVEN
BJP President D V Sadananda Gowda who won the seat from Mangalore in 2004 has opted for Udupi-chaikamagalur by abandoning Mangalore. After the delimitation the dominant areas of BJP in Coorg area were merged with Mysore constituency and BJP wanted to have a safer place for its President. Sadananda Gowda hails from Puttur and naturally he is an outsider in the Udupi/Chimagalur constituency. But being party President Sadananda Gowda is a familiar face in the state and also in the constituency. . Therefore the tag of being an ‘outsider’ for Sadananda Gowda may not cut much ice among the voters. Being the party president of the BJP in the state Sadananda Gowda has more than just his personal prestige at stake in winning this constituency.

Despite a hectic schedule Sadananda Gowda spoke to daijiworld.com during his campaigning in Karkala Taluk. He stated that the low voter turn out in the state during the first phase has been a cause to worry resulting in a slight change in the campaign strategy. “We have galvanized our party workers at booth levels to ensure that people come out vote on the polling day”, he stated. Gowda has received flak for abandoning Mangalore constituency which he had won in 2004 and for trying his luck in Udupi/Chikmagalur this time. Sadananda Gowda was also castigated by Janardhana Poojary for his personal remarks on Congress leaders including Mallikarjuna Kharge and Dharam Singh.
He denied that the changed demography following delimitation was the cause of his shifting base to the news constituency. He said it was party’s decision to field him in Udupi/Chikmagalur and he has obeyed the party dictates in the larger interests of the party. However, it must be remembered that though he is an outsider in the present constituency it did not stop him from commenting on Veerappa Moily for moving away from Mangalore and contesting from Chikballapur.
Sadananda Gowda seems to be sure of his victory in this vast constituency. Speaking on his main rival from Congress party Gowda said “I am sure of winning by a margin of nearly two lakh votes. Jayaprakash had lost Kundapur assembly constituency to BJP candidate by over 25,000 votes. A candidate who has lost by such a big margin in assembly election is not a big threat to BJP in this constituency”, said Sadananda Gowda speaking about his sure chances of winning.
When asked why Ram Bhat of Swabhimani Vedike has not been expelled from the membership of the party he pointed out that since Ram Bhat is not a member of BJP there was no question of expelling him from the membership of the party.
With regard to the major issue in the present constituency he stated that Naxalism is a major threat that is facing the constituency and that he would take all necessary measures to ensure safety to the people of the constituency.
JAYAPRAKASH STAYS FOCUSSED
Though Congress bigwigs like B L Shankar and Taradevi were aspirants for the Congress ticket in this constituency Jayaprakash scored over his party rivals due to his clean image and being a less contentious personality. A three time MLA from erstwhile Brahmavar constituency, Jayaprakash is not an outsider at least when it comes to Udupi segment of the constituency. As an independent candidate he had won twice from Brahmavar which shows the respect he enjoyed in this constituency. However he lost in the 2008 assembly elections against Srinivasa Shetty by a good margin from Kundapur constituency after Brahmavar was merged with it.
The soft spoken Jayapraksh Hegde seems to be unperturbed by his main rival BJP’s Sadanand Gowda. Daijiworld caught up with him in Hebri before he left for a hectic campaign schedule in Malnad region. “Our feedback shows that parents of young children are really a worried lot concerning the safety and well being of their children after the attack on girls in the pub in Mangalore. Added to this, the youngsters who earlier associated with the BJP are no more with them during these elections. All these factors are sure to favour us this time around. The 2008 assembly election results should not be a benchmark for judging the outcome of the the Lok Sabha elections now”, he stated.

Jayaprakash Hegde also said “the anti incumbency factor will weigh against the BJP during this elections. In the 2008 assembly election it was the sympathy factor that propelled BJP to power in the state as the BJP sought votes on the issue of JD(S) betrayal. That sympathy is missing this time around and a different atmosphere is prevalent among voters now”.
Hegde says that candidates should avoid personal attacks on their rivals and instead concentrate on developmental issues, achievements or failures of the government. When reminded that his comments of re-opening the case of MLA Raghupathi Bhat’s wife Padmapriya’s mysterious death in 2008, he said being a MLA public money was involved in tracing her. Therefore it is not a personal attack on the individual he said.
On the issue of Sadananda Gowda being dubbed as an outsider in Udupi/Chikmagalur when Veerappa Moily is contesting from Chikballapur Jayaprakash Hegde said “Moily is not the sitting Member of Parliament whereas Sadananda Gowda represented Mangalore in the 2004 elections who deserted it in favour of Udupi/Chikmagalur”.
Despite being projected as a BJP bastion Congress has its traditional vote bank in this area and Jayaprakash Hegde is expected to give a befitting fight to Sadananda Gowda. Though Jayaprakash Hegde enjoys a good reputation in Udupi region of the constituency that alone is not suffice to fight a high profile candidate like Sadananda Gowda.
Both Gowda and Hegde are lawyers by profession and are of the same age. So the education or the age of the candidates is not a factor to appeal to the voters.
RADHA SUNDARESH ENSURES TRIANGLAR FIGHT
Third front candidate Radha Sundaresh of CPI is believed to be the spoilsport as she is expected to eat into Congress votes. She is the lone woman candidate fielded by the communists. Radha has been involved in trade union movement and the communists seem to have a sizeable following among coffee plantation, anganawadi and beedi workers in this area. Radha also has the support of JD(S) which has not fielded a candidate in her support.
Radha had contested as a Lok Sabha candidate in 1996 and had polled about 76,000 votes. She hails from Mudigere, a factor that might help her being a native. If she is able to get even nearer to what she got in 1996, she is sure to spoil the political equations of the Congress.
THE BATTLE OF LAWYERS
Being a vast constituency the campaign trail for the two main contenders has been a torrid one shuffling between the extremes of the two border districts. The Congress has the battle of countering the challenge of CPI to ensure non-division of votes and also the might of the BJP. Being a prestige issue where its party President if fielded BJP has been trying every trick up its sleeves to woo the voters and ensure a victory for its star candidate.
On the one hand there is the naxal threat and on the other the fears of low voter turn out. But undivided Dakshina Kannada has always recorded a high voter turn out all these years and this year there is no reason for them to abstain from voting.
All said and done an interesting result is awaited from this battleground.

| Dear Mr Gonsalves, I welcome your comments now and request you to refrain yourself from commenting on Islam from your perspective. You should know the subject matter thoroughly to comment. If I dont know any subject I cant comment. Half knowledge is always dangerous. Thumbida koda tuluku dilla. I would like to draw the curtain here. |

Dear shahnawaz kukkikatte, dubai/udupi, I know what is islam. I know what is Jizya tax. And I quote your words “One cant use jehad to kill innocent souls. Our prophet when he went on jehad, he ordered that no innocent souls to be troubled, no trees cut, no animal to be burdened, no women, chilren and old to be touched, not to harm those who dont oppose you in the battle” unquote. How could one can presume exactly a child or an adult.
How can any person kill those who oppose them? Does a man have the right to kill anybody? You have quoted about crusade is similar to Jihad whereas crusade is no more now which has died down long back. But the jihad is still on. If I provide the truth which will cause more arguments and we cannot finish off. I do not want to go beyond this better you refrain from this matter. |

Mr Gonsalves, Do you know what exactly is Jiziya in Islam which Aurangazeb introduced in India. Its a form of tax levied on non muslims on Islamic countries. Non muslims in Islamic countris can use all the infrastructure and practice their religion freely and openly, need not participate in the jehad, but it should pay tax.
In return the state guarantees peace and security and safety of non muslims and their places of worships. But in todays context this is invalid like crusade and no islamic country is implmenting it. Only fanatics like Afganistan and Pakistan may implement it.
I am in UAE and I have never heard that UAE goverment is charging jiziya to non muslims. All what you said is correct but nowhere in practice in modern times. |

Mr Joseph Gonsalves. I appreciate your comments and agree with you. Its hardline stance of fundamentalist bringing dent to the religion. Moderate stance is acceptable. Taliban is no doubt a fundamental company. They are quoting the word jehad from Quran to implecate young minds and misuse it for personal gains. For your information if at all jehad is to be declared, it cant be ordered by the mulla or mufti, it should be ordered by the head of the state. For eg it at all Afganistan intend to declare jehad against Russia as occupying force, then it is not bin laden but it the president of Afganistan has to order jehad.
One cant use jehad to kill innocent souls. Our prophet when he went on jehad, he ordered that no innocent souls to be troubled, no trees cut, no animal to be burdened, no women, chilren and old to be touched, not to harm those who dont oppose you in the battle. What you see today is jehad of convenience and from the perspective of Osama and Taliban. Thats most unfortunate. |

Its Congress which is spreading hatred. They do not want development, infrastructure, good roads & jobs for people. All they want is tarnish BJP's image and then wooing minority communities for the votes. Perhaps they have forgotten there are millions poor people from across the communities.
We want a party which does not divide the communities just for vote bank and beat the drum of secularism. By doing this congress has sowed the seeds of hatred among communities. We certainly do not want a party which is playing a game with the sentiments of people. My vote goes against congress. |

Dear Mr. shahnawaz kukkikatte, dubai/udupi I quote your words “Jihad is no way difference than your crusade” unquote. It is true that Christians had waged crusade long back and that the crusade has made nothing but bloodshed and Christians have realized that it was a mistake and the crusade had died down long back. Later crusade has nothing to do with Christianity even crusade is not a word in the Holy Bible.
Whereas Jihad is a word in the Holy Quran and the fundamental Muslims are pursuing Jihad. What Osama Bin Laden does is the same and he is quoting exact verses from the Quran and the Muslims outwardly disowning him. There are scores of hardliners aiding and supporting Osama. Secondly, Babur was from Samarkand, present Uzbekistan. He came to India after besieging Kabul, Afghanistan. Many of these rulers have introduced jizaya tax which did not carried long due to resistance or due to failure in the tax system. |

In reference to Pastor E. W. Frank - I think religion should stay out of politics and politics out of religion. I wish you would talk about Congress as your personal preference instead of what appears like Christian voting bank endorsing Congress.
It is a very dangerous trend dividing the society further on the basis of religion, and will be more pronounced if Hindu religious leaders also start endorsing political parties. Don't religions require people to love one another, love your neighbor, love your enemy, etc. It is best if religions remain apolitical. |

Mr Kumar/Dubai and Mr Kiran/Manipal, we were living in jungles and there was nothing and all of a suddden in less than one year we have seen all these developments, before BJP rule in Karnataka we were using bullocks and donkeys for transportation, jungles and paddy fields to answer nature's call, using candles and diyas to light our houses. All of a sudden Yeddi came as Alladin with his lamp and done the miracles!!!! What a hypocrisy!!! We certainly dont need any development and prosperity if we dont have peace and secuirty.
If our women folk are not safe, whats use of prosperity my friend. If some one takes away our liberty and freedom, would you call it as development?? You have given a list of positive achievement. Please high light the negative achievements also. Be just to GOd and be just to your neighbours and fellow human beings.
Give your next door neighbour what is due to him. Your neighbour does not ask for money or food from you. He prefers to starve, But what he expect from you is respect, dignity, love, care and security. |

Mr Satish, historically there were mistaken done by foreign invaders who came to India at your predecessors invitation and they didnt come on their own. But we are now living in plural Independant India and if at all if you want to rectify any mistakes, we must do it post Independance happenings. You cant hold present muslims responsible for what Babur or Bahamanis did. If you see, then all the brahmins, including Dr Kiran Acharya must be treated as invaders and foreigners. These are the Aryans who invaded India from Central Asia and orignal Indians are Dravidians who were pushed towards south of India.
Babur came from Afganistan and for your information we should start building India rather than disintegrating it. A child shall not be punished for his fathers mistakes. How come you hold present day muslims and chiristians responsible for the invasion of India by mughals and british. My friends, you people are day dreaming of correcting the history. Why Tamil Nadu governemnt is giving all losgistic support to Tamil rebels of Sri Lanka, because they are from the same ethnic lines. If you dont stop this non sense, I am sure history shall repeat on its own and again India shall be ruled by foreigners and we all shall become slaves in our own country.
Secondly for Kiran and Satish, I dont have to answer them as I dont see the need. The voters of Udupi shall answer and if they find truth in their comments, they shall vote for DVS and if not then they shall vote to JPH. |

The people of Udupi are really sick of voting for Congress for so many years and even though the candidate from our constituency Mr. Oscar Fernandes became a Union Minister, all Congress MPs did absolutely nothing for our development. Our roads have been bad for years, no bus-stands, water problems, poor condition of National and State Highways, ports, poor condition of our railway station, transport, rural roads and connectivity, sea erosion, etc - problems galore.
Manipal seems to have developed on its own. Whether it is BJP or Congress widening the roads (including Udupi-Manipal Road, Kinnimulky-Diana circle, etc) and building better bus-stands (city, service and govt), the point is that it is happening only after 60 years of independence. There are also other new developments during this period like the new CMC (City Municipal Council)complex in Manipal, Vented dams at Marne and Kemthur villages, Solid Waste Management Plant at Alevoor, BusVoice system, Storm drains in the city, etc Yet we are only talking of whether we should vote for a Poojary, Bunt, Gowda and stuff like that. Congress is busy spreading fear about Hindus to grab on to power. |

Are these not hypocrisy of BJP? 1.Why did not BJP/NDA Govt at center did not support speedy construction of Mangalore –Hassan broad gauge railway line during the tenure of Mr. Krishna led Congress govt? This railway line project was sanctioned by Narasimha Rao led Congress govt. 2.If BJP was for development of coastal districts of Karnataka, why NDA Govt did not sanction Talapady – Kundapur NH17 four lane project during its tenure? 3.Now BJP Govt in the State buying power from all available sources at high cost and also providing police protection of speedy completion of 1015MW Udupi Power Project.
If they realized its need now why then their party opposed it for almost four years? What a double standard? Where was the vision of visionaries then? 4.Nuclear deal opposed by BJP. Why it is now not raised as a poll issue? 5.Darmaraj Sigh Govt brought IT park -SEZ at Mudipu near Mangalore and sanctioned water supply from Netravati river and four lane roads from Mangalore to this place. 6.During the last three budgets what was BJP govts support for this project? Or to develop any other road projects in our twin districts. 7.Why BJP is MUM about black money within the country? Only one wonderful development work I could see from BJP is four lane project between Ambagilu to Kadiyali. With the dedication of good souls our twin districts are today highly literate in the State and have good sanitation system compared to other parts of the state.
Other excellent quality of BJP leaders is extra ordinary oratory skills to prove white as black and black as white. People in these districts living with harmony for centuries? Especially Hindus and Christians were living as brothers and sisters with mutual respect to each other setting an example to other parts of the country. Were our people not cultured, civilized before (90’s ) when some religious extremists borrowed and started forcing culture of other parts on us? What we really need in our twin districts is 1.Peaceful co-existence for our future prosperous life and 2.Creation of Jobs for the younger generation 3.Ensuring availability of electricity and water supply and 4.Good roads Now BJP is claiming development. Were we nomads before 2 years? Dear countrymen “Dikawat se Math Jao” |

| Abu Shahwaz I think u better know the meaning of ethnic cleansing. To support your party is one thing but to call other names is another. Pakistan resorted to ethnic cleansing and thats why the number of Hindus has come down drastically. May be for Muslims in India Congress is the saviour as it keeps them in good humour in the name of minorities. One has to understand why Congress has special love for majority minorities only? Why sikhs, parsis, Kashmiris, Jains, Budhists do not come under their minority list. Because majority minorities repay during elections. Most of the comments i c here are fully one sided. While Congress for them is secular (self styled) whoever talks about BJP is dubbed as communal. Are not supporters of Congress communal. Their very tone and tenor denotes communal venom. Criticism in itself is welcome. But keeping oour own communal agenda in front and then calling others communal amounts to hypocrisy. |

| Hello Mr. Naveen, Udupi – Your prediction is totally wrong. You have highlighted the improvement of BJP in 5 years terms but important thing you have not highlighted i.e. attacks on minorities, women and minors, worship places etc. Why???. |

| Whats the difference between Ajmal Kasab and Gopala Murthy, both of whom have seen God's wish in killing innocent people? RSS and BJP ideology stand for ethnic cleansing of minorities and making India as Hindu Theocratic Nation. Where are we heading to? Do you still need to vote for BJP. The vision is clear and hidden agenda has surfaced. Varun Gandhi has spoken the true agenda of BJP. |

| Majority of views expressed here shows how the people are fed up with the politics of BJP. However there are few BJP voices which again and again sings on same lines about Congress and Sonia Gandhi. In 2004 elections BJP made a big issue of Sonia's origin and people rejected BJP. BJP is really frustrated now and have no issues. I have a question.. If you have to a person one with Pakistani origin who is dividing the country on the basis of religion and the other with Italian origin who is pivot in uniting the country. It is not important where you are born but what you are doing for the country today. My BJP friends awake... BJP is using Hindus as vote bank. They have done nothing for Hindu community. What they have done to remove inequality among Hindus. Except for some exceptional cases,in BJP lower caste Hindus are made to fight in streets and the upper caste Hindus enjoying leadership in the name of religion. In the history of Karnataka, we have not seen such a corrupt BJP government. They are distributing tax payer's money for buying votes mainly in villages. Money is flowing like water for BJP in this election. |

| Gopala Murthy S., MANGALORE... if this country is ruled only by hindus then we will have civil wars....upper caste hindus killing lower castes...today hindus are in doldrums because of this caste, creed and such nonsensical ideological system created by brahmins....I would rather have a corrupt congress rule the country than a BJP(which is much lesser communal than earlier)if the BJP does the same.....said by you..... |

| Ladies and Gentlemen, please believe that BJP will win all the seats of India on May 16 2009 and all other parties including congress, JDS etc. will be defeated as they are getting ZERO votes. I am sure about this because it is the wish of the GOD and only BJP can make our country a pure Hindu country by killing others. Thank you BJP. Good luck BJP. |

| Congress and Gandhi family = 5000 Sikhs killed in 1984, 1000s missing after emergency in 1975, over 500 people killed in Bhagalpur, hundreds killed in Moradabad, Meerut, Badaun etc. Culprits not only walk free but are made ministers by the Congress. Congress Gandhi family = TRILLIONS looted and kept in secret swiss bank accounts and Quattrocci is allowed to escape with the loot from accounts frozen after investigations. Congress Gandhi family = Allowed Hindus to be driven out of Kashmir, Removed POTA and allowed Islamic terrorists a free run in the country, . Now, is the Congress a curse on the nation or not ?? |

Mr Richard Alvares/Mizoram, my brother, May God bless you and guide you. Jerusalem is as sacred to muslims as it is sacred to jews and christians. Its known in arabic as Yesholam means Gods place. It is in Bethlehem and has the church of nativity where Jesus is born. Bethlem is a translated from the arabic word Bait Al Leham which means house of meat as this village was known and full of shepherds. Jesus too was a shepherd.
Secondly you talked about jehad, hate and terrorism. Jehad is no way difference than your crusade. In India in the name of Hindutva, the BJP ruled states have unleashed terrorism on minorities in the name of religion. In Gujarat, state sponsored terrorism massacared muslims and burnt them alive. In Orissa, state sponsored terrorism killed christians, burnt Staines alive, burnt churches, raped nuns, convents were ransacked, priests were killed only in the name of religion and state protected the perpertors. Now they are trying their strategy in Karnataka which is ruled by BJP. Why these injustice is happening in BJP ruled states only??
In Mangalore churches were attacked, grottos were vandalised, silent protestors were lathi charged. Why as an Indian you dont have the right to be a christian in Indian soil? Who hijacked your religious freedom? How long would you tolerate. When the whole community bleeds, retaliation is quite natural. How long these minorities shall keep quiet? If the state sponsored attacks on minorities conitunes unabetted, I am sure that will lead to terrorism. All these days you heard about muslim terrorism, Now very soon you shall hear about Christian terrorism.
Oppression, alienation and discrimination gives birth to terrorism. Terrorism inside the country is more dangerous than outside terrorism. How will you stop internal terrorism? BJPs policy have given and would give birth to more terrorists. BJP is indirectly promoting terrorism. The terrorism started in India with the demolition of Babri Masjid and there was not even a single bomb blast before 1992. Explore and find out. NOw BJP talks about Pak/LoT/Taliban terrorism. We as a nation are capable of facing and defeating these outside terrorist.
Why dont BJP talk about inside terrorism? My brother I am talking about cause, prevention and remedy for internal terrorism. My heart bled when I saw in youtube, the police of mangalore using their butts of service guns to break the glass windows of churches. Women were beaten up mercilessly. Christians are very very peaceloving community and do lots of social service. Even this community is not spared during the BJP rule. Lets put our house in order first.
This is the time for us to decide who is better for us. We have to decide between peace and tension, between secularism and communualism, between domestic terror or international terror, between freedom and slavery, between independence and phobia. Now as a matured citizen you decide to whom you vote. May God giv |

I am totally disagree with Mr.Vijay Saxena as well as Mr.Richard Alvares. They are not called chamachas. These people are obeidant followers of Nehru/Gandhi family from the begginning. For each and everything they will do Jai Ho. Jai Ho.
Eventhough, by any chance Sonia's hand struck in between door of a car and shout 'kai' 'kai' (my hand my hand- help), these people will shout 'Jaiho'Jaiho'. Because they won't see what consequences happened to them due to congress.
They had shown only symbol 'HAND', nothing else. I don't think they ever change their track. Only true leaders like Anwar Manippady Shahnawaz Hussein etc. only can make differences. |

Even if a godhra is repeated under congress rule you will still say BJP is behind this....the problem with you and some congress supporters is you guys think what you say is wisdom unbiased....Your comments in some issues are good...but when it comes to politics...sorry mate...you add a lot of communal colour to it...pseudo secularism....if congress was so good....then we would have been ruling the world by now.... |
