M'lore: 'Gujarat Model Proposed by Narendra Modi Total Failure' - Shabnam Hashmi

Pic: Dayanand Kukkaje
Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (MM/RD)

Mangalore, May 12: The communal forces are trying to implement Gujarat model Karnataka.  But it would not be true in real sense.  It is nothing but a polished way of misleading the voters of Karnataka, said Shabnam Hashmi, director ‘Anhad', an NGO.

Speaking to media persons on Monday May 12, she said that more than two lac people were displaced within a week after the Gujarat riot in 2002. The majority of native Gujaratis live in ordinary or poor conditions, she informed.

Dang district, which located in southern most part of Gujarat, is the poorest district in the entire country. 10 districts of Gujarat have been included in the list of 300 underdeveloped districts of the country. More than 6 thousand farmers committed suicide during Narendra Modi’s tenure as chief minister, she added.

Even the economic model of Narendra Modi is a failure. Minimum wages paid to unskilled labourers in Gujarat are the lowest in the country, compared to other states across India. Almost 40% of the population of Dang district migrates to Surat every year in search of jobs. They toil in sugar cane field for an average of month in a year which hampers the education of their children, she told.

Tribal activist Rumal said that Modi speaks of vibrant Gujarat on his tours all over the country. However, even after 60 years of Independence, one has to walk about 5 kilometers to buy ration. The health services and ration supplied by the Gujarat government are of very poor quality. The freedom of speech of ‘Adivasis’ in Gujarat has been curbed by the state government. "Do you want to adopt the same Gujarat model in Karnataka," he questioned.

Sachin Pandyan, tribal activist in Gujarat and P B D’Sa of Dakshina Kannada People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) were present at press meet.

First & Foremost We should not forget that We Are The Citizens of this Great Democratic Country, with Different Cultures, enjoying the Freedom to Practice The Major Relegions of The World, Living & Co-Existing in A Harmonius Atmosphere, with A Slogan Of Live & Let Live., despite some odds. Politicians are elected reps/servants of the Citizens of this Country to serve the Country and Masses, but not to teach hatred and dirty politics of divide & rule policy, by fooling the masses.

It seems the Current Politics have only One Point Selfish Programme of Power at Any Cost.To attain it the parties are changed like dress, without any principle or conscience whatsoever, as and when they will, like Opportunists?. Is it "Jana Marulo? Jaatre Marulo"(in kannada). Hence my request with all the Respected Fellow Citizens/Eligible Voters while Franchising Our Valuable Right Of Vote,

Please Think Twice, about THE CV of the Prospective Canditate & The Party & Policies, at least who are sincere personally & as a Party Collectively, who can give GOOD GOVERNANCE & Those Who Do Not Indulge in Mud-Slinging, rather than Serving the Country & Citizens. Please do not get carried away with their sugar coated talks. This is the Only Opportunity We get Atleast Once in Five(5) Years to Elect a able or reliable candidate rather than the one, who has no time to serve or care the people, from whom, he has snatched the Valuable Vote. Let Almighty God Bless & Save All of Us. Long Live India.

Its real fun to read the conflicting comments on the article and our people fighting against each other like cats and dogs.BJP,Congress or JDS,nothing is going to change as long as we have such hatered and are divided, politicians will only use us as means to serve their ends, i dont blame them either.......the politicians are just exploiting the situation, and why should't they.

This shabnam is an NGO and she is like a public telephone, put a coin it speaks or else does nothing. Well, I have seen how NGO operates and no one is interested with your talks. Face the facts and visit Gujarat and see for yourself the development there. Dont take a small portion of Gujarat and talk. Can you dare to talk about Bihar or UP?? Well, I am sure you have been cornfed by the congress and goes around telling your fairy tale. So stop criticizing and visit Gujarat. Maybe you will fall in love with that place.

We cant'fully ignore developments happend in Gujrat during Modi period but more credit goes to NRIs & businessman Gujaraties. And In India we have lots of problems due to bad politicians, businessperson and communal minded people. We all need to think about good standard of livings like education, electricity, water, roads etc.

It is true that Congress is not great especially in Karnataka right now. But Krishna did do very well last time when he was in power. Credit must go to him for the IT development in the state. BJP and development?? May be Communal developments they are talking about. They are power hungry politicians who don't have back bones. They won the election promising Ram temple but could not deliver simply because of the fear of extinction. Modi and Gujarat? Surat and Ankleshwar?? Stinky cities!

Now who should we vote for? Congress? 50 years of under development, communal riots, dynasty rule, sychophany, sikh-congress riots, indo-china war etc CPIM - Nandigram, Kannur violence, virtually no industrial development in CPIM rules states, dead ideology, chinese patriots So as you can see Ms hashmi, nobody is holier than thou... At least with BJP, you know they will look into development and I think Dang is not the only district in Gujarat. So if people from Dang are going to Surat, it is better than people from Dang going to Ahmedabad... That would mean the tier II cities in Gujarat are doing quite well than in other states

This is a humble request to all my Indian brothers & sisters irrespective of the religion. Please do not be taken away due to some colourful words from politician/s. We all know what happened in Gujarat is not at all acceptable to MANKIND, then why debate on each other as I saw in some comments on this article. We should all be one and not allow these politicians to interfere in the unity of being Indians. It' proven that they are trying to DIVIDE and RULE as did by British in our country before Independence. Whatever it is the politicians look for their own interests more than the nation' or the people. So let us think twice before we react, we should not forget that we all together form INDIA not few politicians who try to break it.

Gujarat is a well developed state compared to other states. There is power, water, roads etc. I agree!! Also not to miss the killings, rapes, the communal hatred. When there is no peace of mind and people live in fear do this power, water & road make any sense??

It is indeed unfortunate that in India the so called NGOs sponsored by some political parties wakeup only during election time.

K. S. Mayya, Mangalore/South KoreaTuesday, May 13, 2008

This article goes to show that anything and everything can be criticized by drawing things out of context. The issues raised by the NGO are issues tormenting the whole nation and not just Gujarat. BJP in Karnataka does not necessarily have to emulate Gujarat in terms of the events that followed Godhra. I have been to Gujarat and not just cities but also traveled through the rural areas.

Naysayers are best advised to confine their criticism of Modi to the events of Godhra but extending it to the development visible in Gujarat exposes their vested interest, and as always, SEEING IS BELIEVING. Here’s in short the to-do list for the next government that is currently available if not in all parts but most parts in Gujarat. 1. Ensuring 24 hours power and drinking water supply with or without private participation. 2. Infrastructure development in pace with growing needs of the population. 3. Government facilitation of entrepreneurship that creates job and develops skill among unemployed youth. 4. Increase in Agricultural production/productivity.

Well Martin, let me ask you have you been to Gujarat? If so then which part? Water, Electricity and other utilities problem is all over India. Even in Delhi where congress rules. So where is your logic. You seem to be a anti BJP.

Gujarat was not developed by Modi, it was developed long before due to intelligent Gujarati's, NRI's and businessmen. But Moditva was only developed hatred, jealous, malicious, and communal mentality feelings. and helped only one community..

According to a few persons of Ahmedabad frequently on tour this side, Gujarat is a State developed to maximum extent, compared to other States in India. In my own opinion, Karnataka is far ahead compared to other States all over India, thanks to the administration of Ars for two terms.

There is lot of truth in this article and we need to be aware of the other side of gujarath.Internationally Modi is a shame to India and is compared to Hitler in Germany. If we Mangaloreans do not want the communal forces to pervade our society then we need to carefully dissect and see what good really Modi has done to the poor people and Common man. Lot of our time goes in addressing religion, Hindutva etc do we get time to address issues blocking our development? Congress has chance but it may squander away this instead of doing good! Only way we can prevent this is fight for our rights and dont glorify our politicians but instead monitor them( politicians) on their performance!

Karnataka is a land of intelectuals. Specially Undivided DK. Let's not try to make it a Gujarath & Bihar. There are some bad elemens (communal) trying to follow something which is not worthwhile. Where are these Kannada Chaluvaligaras? Their slogan ends at Bharisu Kannada Dim Dimava!! Oppose English medium schools, secure admission to their children in the best convent/english institutions and earn a career & power in the name of Kannada. I wish more and more youth get into higher education & rational thinking and expell these opportunists from public life.

There is no truth in this Shabnam Hashmi's article. I feel this is a one sided article. If some one has done a good job that must be appreciated. No use in putting a biased article.
