South Kanara still a Stronghold for BJP - Yeddi
Special Political Correspondent - Daijiworld

Bangalore
May 10, 2008

As the state is all set for the 1st phase of elections former Chief Minister,  66 year old Bookanakere Siddalinga Swamy  Yeddyurappa, who is projected as the next Chief Minister of the state, somewhat looks relaxed and contented.  Though he has dismissed all poll surveys including those which say there is a swing of 3 per cent in favour of BJP in southern part of the state which is the traditional stronghold of JD(S), the positive results must have done a lot to boost his confidence. Bravely enduring all the inconveniences that go with the hectic campaigning he is crisscrossing the state in a bid to get maximum mileage for his party in the ensuing assembly elections.

In a freewheeling chat with Daijiworld.com just before leaving for Shikaripura to carry out the second phase of election campaign,  where he is up against the ever exuberant S Bangarappa, is expressed satisfaction and confidence about his party’s performance in these elections.

Q. Now that you have toured almost 160 constituencies and the 1st phase of elections are scheduled tomorrow how do you view the performance of your party?

A. Out of the 89 seats we are going to bag 45 seats in the 1st phase of elections.  In Bangalore itself we are going to get 18 out of the 28 seats that are going to the polls.

Q. In the last elections Congress had secured 35.28% as against the 28.49% of votes bagged by you.  How are going to surpass the 7% difference to surpass the Congress and assume power?

A. The percentage of 2004 was the result of a different outcome.  The issues on which the elections are fought in 2008 are different.  The betrayal issue, price rice and the politics of opportunism are some of the aspects which are going to be in our favour.  Congress could not muster a decent crowd for Sonia Gandhi’s public meeting.  Congress is scared to face the people and that is why Prime Minister did not address a public meeting in the state.

Q. There is a feeling that the ‘sympathy wave’ has fizzled out?

A. In this land of Punyakoti the issue of betrayal will always be there.  It will never fizzle out because it is question of morality.  Political morality is still going to be an issue for the people of this state.  We had a meeting just now and my homework and calculations shows that we have hit the bull’s eye.  Leaders like Made Gowda, Bachche Gowda, Thippeswamy, G T Devegowda have joined the party and this is going to have a positive impact on the party’s overall performance  with a remarkable impact in the 1st phase .

Q. Why do you think people will vote for you overwhelmingly this time?

A. People are tired of the coalition masti and want a stable government.  Moreover my budgets as Finance Minister have given hopes for the hopeless and the helpless.  Now my party’s manifesto  is like a third budget for me.  On becoming the Chief Minister I am going to present a budget of 1lakh crores which would be beneficial to all the people.

Q All parties have come together to defeat you in Shikaripura.  What is your strategy to winning in Shikaripura?

A. It is a pity that Bangarappa has become the sacrificial lamb of the political gamesmanship of the Congress and the JD(S).  But they will not succeed in their ulterior motives as the people of Shikaripura know the hidden agenda behind this game.  Bangarappa can’t even walk let alone carry out a campaign worth mentioning.

Q. South Kanara is considered to be the fortress of BJP where you u won 11 of the 15 seats at stake.  Now there are 13 seats and how many seats are you going to win?

A. Undivided South Kanara still a stronghold of our party and we are going to improve our position this time.

Q. But there are enough indications that BJP is going to face ignominy due to the rebellion of Shakunthala Shetty in Puttur?

A. The rebel candidates of BJP have never succeeded in putting up a formidable show and Shakunthala Shetty is no exception to this rule.  With the JD(S) extending its support for her people have come to realize the truth behind the sordid saga that transpired in Puttur.

Q. Since Shakunthala and Shobha Karandlaje both hail from Puttur people say that Shakunthala was sacrificed to make way for Shobha to become the minister on BJP assuming power?

A    So many stories have been developed on this issue without any basis for it.

Don Frank, hope u remenber today is 25th May 08, this result has got nothing to do with your prediction or your wish, this is a overall judgement of 5.5 billion kannadigas, so go with decision let us hope & look forward for something good for the society, even i recall your saying it is not so easy to gain victory against Mr.Bangarappa

It is sad to note that Don Frank is using 'we' when he says he does not want BJP to come to power. It just shows the scant regard he has for democracy. Who is the "we" for Don. After all if majority people want it who is Don and his ilk to stop the victory of any party. Mr Don has certainly raised a pertinent issue and it calls for a public discussion why some people hve so much pent up anger against a certain political party. Preconceived notions and judgements do not augur well for educated and learned people of this land.

It is very sad that when BJP ran an election on Mandir-Masjid issue, people elected them overwhelmingly and when they ran purely on Development issue (India Shining and Golden Quadrilateral, etc) people preferred not to elect them. Makes us wonder what exactly are our priorities and what wins more votes! After all politicians of any party take hints and lessons from the electoral voice of the nation.

Mr. VR Lobo, if you have hatred towards a particular religion, let be it. But due to this hatred please not justify thieves and &*in other parties in a dignified forum like F2F in Daijiworld. ALL POLITICIANS ARE EQUAL, some are ready to sell country and Yeddi is not in them.

I wish Yeddiyurappa and BJP all the best.We have seen Congress and other parties in power in Karnataka for many years and are aware of the developments. Now let us give a chance to BJP and see what they have for the people of Karnataka.Price rise is not a issue which can not be controlled Mr VR Lobo. Please don't drag the names of Hindu gods unnecessarily when you want to comment.

Mr. Yeddi, your dream of becoming the CM of Karnataka is yet to be fulfilled. BJP may not get the required numbers to form the Govt. Morever, Mr. Yeddi should win against  Bangarappa, which is not easy. Eventhough we do not believe in astrology, we predict a congress victoy at the end. Let us see on May 25th. We do not want to see BJP assuming power in our state once the election results are out. Even in South Kanara BJP may not retain the seats it had won in 2004. Let us hope for the best. Jai Hind.

It is so sad you found only yedyurappa as power hungry politician. What about Congress politician? They are all fallen from Heaven or what?

Bhavani Shankar, Sullia/BangaloreSunday, May 11, 2008

On reading Lobo's responseI wonder y lobo is carrying so much hatred towards BJP and Yeddi. Who according to Lobo is not power hungry? Congress or JD(S). These parties call themselves secular but do everything to grab power including placating those whom they consider as their traditionl vote bank. Are'nt all Kannadigas are aware how many Congerss people are waiting in the cue to occupy the CM's post.

Despite being the single largest party 2004 power hungry JD(S) and Congress succeeded in ruling the state denying the same to the party which had got highest number of seats. Do u call it as a democracy or as politics of opportunism. Aspiring for CM's post is better than shedding crocodile tears as is done by Gowda and equally cunning son Kumaraswami.

Lobo is least bothered about the betrayal or the so called lack of political morality which reached its nadir with Kumaraswami refusing to handover the reigns of power. The betrayal of open promise is nothing but betraying the people. All polticians are power hungry. Or Krishna wouldnot have left his plum post as Maharashtra governor and come back to Karnataka politics.

Mr.Bookanakere Siddalinga Swamy Yeddyurappa- It is true that, you are a Great politician belonging to BJP and also true that you are a Greatest "POWER HUNGRY" politician of this Century and to fulfil your dreams you will not Hesitate to tie your relations with Congress. All the Kannadigas are aware of your wish ie:"CM CHAIR".Otherwise, when the Oil Price reached its high of almost $125 a barrel you won't have fooled the people in regard of price rise. Not only you or your party BJP even the goddess LAXMI comes down to earth to stabilise the price rise, she will succumb to defeat in this particular case of price rise
