Dear Friends,
The 8th of March is celebrated as International Women’s Day. It is a special day to remember every Woman – your mother, your sister, your wife, your daughter, your lady teacher, your daughter in law etc etc. Every woman in this world has to be remembered, respected and revered on this day because of the multifarious roles she plays as a Woman. She is the Hand that rocks the Cradle, the Hand that rules the world.
On this special occasion to commemorate the International Women’s Day we bring to you an interview with a very outstanding personality – GIRIJA SINHA – wife of the Consul General of Dubai – His Excellency Yash Sinha.
Girija Sinha has had the opportunity of being a widely travelled person, where she has literally seen the plight of women across the globe. Apart from being the wife of a highly placed Government diplomat, Sinha, has the exquisite charm of being the ‘People’s Princess” because of her warm nature, her sociable attitude and above all her easy rapport of mingling with the people wherever she goes.

INTERVIEW WITH GIRIJA SINHA
Elaine: What is the significance of International Women’s Day ? Especially in context to Women all around the world.
Girija Sinha : On the occasion of International Women’s Day I’d like to make a few observations about the status of women in different parts of the world, namely the Western Woman viz a viz the Eastern Woman.
Granted the woman in Europe or the U.S. is free to do much more than her Eastern counterpart is, however, with certain limitations which we may not be aware of.
There has never been a female president in the United States. The same goes for holding key posts in the public and private sectors. The Americans are sexist and racist, in that order. There are many a post at the best American universities which are solely male domains. Even promotions are decided not upon the merit of the professor but on whether he’s a male or she’s a female. Of course not being white American comes into play after that! It’s a similar situation in the banking sector and with other professions as well. Look at the number of key posts that women hold in government in the U.S. They are far fewer than the number held by women in India!
In Europe one finds a smattering of female prime ministers and more women in key positions. Let’s not forget that the Sufragette Movement was started by Simone de Beauvoir in France. In fact she coined the term ”second sex” for women in 1949 which is not really that many years ago! Obviously she along with other women of the Existentialist movement in Europe felt the need for equality as late as the mid 20th Century.
We’ve had female heads of state in India, Sri Lanka and
