Beware of exercise addiction, it could Prove Fatal

By Kavita Bajeli-Datt

New Delhi, Oct 23 (IANS) The six-pack or the eight-pack abs of Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan may look mighty impressive but it's inspiring many youngsters to pump iron without being aware that this "exercise addiction" could prove fatal. This week two people in India were victims of "exercise addiction".

Forty-two year-old Ranjan Das, the youngest CEO in the country, collapsed with a massive cardiac arrest after working out in his in-house gym in Mumbai, while in Jaipur a young aspiring model died while working out at the treadmill at a gym.

Both were described as fitness freaks.

According to M.S. Bhatia, who heads the department of psychiatry at the G.T.B. Hospital here, cases of people addicted to exercise are growing. Most are young men.

"We get so many cases these days. With the thrust on body, appearance and fitness, plus copying Bollywood stars and ramp models, youngsters are going all out to work out, not knowing how much time they should spend and what is good or bad for them," Bhatia told IANS.

"We have seen patients who have become so addicted to physical activity that they engage in compulsive, excessive exercise," Bhatia, who along with others wrote about the growing phenomenon in the Delhi Psychiatry Journal, said.

He said this compulsion is described as "exercise addiction" as physical activity "significantly interferes with important activities, occurs at inappropriate times or in inappropriate settings or when the individual continues to exercise despite injury or other medical complications."

Bhatia said recently a young executive came to them with "muscle fracture".

"He complained of physical exhaustion, fever, withdrawal symptoms and lethargy. He didn't want to work, had sleepless nights. He had the typical symptoms of depression. Despite these problems, he didn't want to leave exercising," he said.

"He was exercising beyond his capacity. His muscles had become weak due to this. He was on steroids because he had skin problem. All this contributed to his feeling depressed. But he never left exercising," Bhatia said, adding that they had to prescribe an anti-depressant.

But it is just not depression or obsession, it means hormonal changes too.

"It also means hormonal changes like decreased testosterone in men and increased production of cortisol (produced in response to stress). Among women, there is an increased risk of stress fractures and osteoporosis. Menstrual cycle of girls may get altered," he added.

Also, there would be instances of damaged tendons, ligaments, bones, cartilage and joints. "Behavioural changes like increased anxiety, inability to relax or rest are some other symptoms of this," he said.

He said people should look out for warning signs.

"One should see whether they are exercising for more than two hours daily repeatedly, always following the same rigid exercise pattern, working out alone, fixated on weight loss or calories, exercising to the point of pain, exercising when sick or injured or skipping work, class or social plans for workouts," Bhatia told IANS.

"It is said that one percent of the population suffers from exercise addiction and this percentage is higher among elite runners, competitive power lifters, endurance athletes and obsessive gym goers," he added.

Anubha Verma, 27, is one such case. She is obsessed with exercising since college days. "Initially, it was a stress buster, but soon it became a lot more," she told IANS.

Now, every day, she does the treadmill and runs for an hour. She has also bought gadgets like a tummy twister and aerobics mats.

"I just can't do without exercising. I know I am obsessive, but I can't help it," Verma said.

Bhatia has a word of caution. "People should from time to time review their exercise regime. They should see that they are not overdoing it and not beyond their capacity.

"It is fine to exercise, but not that much that it overtakes your life or proves dangerous," he said.

Excellent suggestions on excercising, much appreciated. However I may add, before doing any aerobics especially jogging, one must stretch the muscles and before stretching one must warm up the muscles. I just read a joke about sport injury. The cure for sport injury is RICE, yes I meant RICE. R for rest, I for icing, C for compression, and E for elevation. One caution I may emphasize here: Always listen to your body. Drink plenty of fluids after the excerises because our bodies dehydrate a lot. I said FLUIDS and not ALCHOL.

The phenomenon of excessive exercising can be attributed to the media, advertisements by sports good manufacturers, clothes designers, peer pressure to name a few.In the present world we do want to be ME,but we want to be what others think it is cool to be so.At he end of any exercise the person must be invigorated and not stressed.Exercise must be a hobby which has to be enjoyed and not a passion for self destruction. Trainers at the gyms must stress on the facts about compulsive addictive exercising. It is only then that some sort of message will be filtered down.Besides there are many companies manufacturing chemical nutrients and supplements which promise to give people ADONIS type of body.Life is not having only a good body but there are lot of other things which have to be delved upon which gives balance to our life.Educatio on a sustained basis throygh various forms of media will help to clear the myth of excessive exercising. It is also the responsiblity of parents to ensure that children are not pushed into this syndrome.

Both Sunil and Eric Coelho have explained the pros and cons of exercise. The culture of extreme in diet, exercise, religion, wealth, knowlege etc can be fatal. I am a senior citizen, and to bring down inches at the waistline, I took a strick diet. I lost the inches, but due to the lack of proper nutrition, I got sick. And the sickness has caused me more sleepless night and mental agony.

Young and old will have to watch their proper nutrition before undertaking the warfare of cutting the fat and creating muscular body. Please don't blindly follow any fad created by celebrities. Watch for our health with certain caution, so we won't be regretted later on.

Who do we blame EXERCISE ADDICTION on? Hollywood, Bollywood, TV and the media. They are the cause of all this. Bottom line is that anything done moderately is good for health. Eat regularly small quantities and eat good food. Figure last for a short while but what's inside you lasts forever.

We have always been told that too much of anything can be bad. This includes exercise too. But at the same time, this unfortunate death of a young CEO should not turn us away from a good normal half hour fitness regime. It definitely has its benefits.

The Cause of Death of Youngest CEO is not work out in GYM but due to Lack of Sleep. Exercise addiction can be harmful if there is lack of sleep. The Youngest CEO used to sleep only 4 hours a day and rest of time was work and exercise. So to say it was all the time "Work and Exercise" but no time to play i.e., Entertainment. Equal amount of work and exercise should be backed with equal amount of entertainment and family outing. Also it is very importaant that sufficient quantity of food is consumed. Due to Fitness Freak let me reduce the intake of food so to get 6 or 8 Packs or remain slim and trim. It will amount to total disaster. I believe in One thing LIve to Eat and Not Eat to Live. We should ensure that exercise without putting stress to our body and mind will make your day wonderful.
