Kundapur: Hounded by misfortune, widow seeks help for her ailing daughter

Kundapur, Jun 24:  Padma, living in Kodapadi in Gujjadi village in the taluk, has been facing a spate of unfortunate events. She lost her husband in a recent accident. Her elder daughter, Preethi, has been suffering from a rare phenomenon of brittle bones since her birth. In the midst of utter poverty, this mother of two is fighting with determination to provide treatment to her suffering daughter.

Preethi is the elder child of Padma and Sridhar couple. She has a younger brother. Preethi’s bones have been brittle since she was born. Even a firm grip would have been enough for her to feel like her bones were breaking. Therefore, the parents took the child to various doctors and hospitals, but tests did not succeed in providing proper treatment. Preethi has already undergone seven surgeries at a private hospital in Manipal. Six steel rods have been fitted to her legs, while bones in hands have also been reinforced with rods. The girl once accidentally fell while moving around, and the hand has bent on account of the road jutting out of the skin. The doctors have expressed helplessness in treating this condition through surgery.

Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, has certified that Preethi has been suffering from osteogenesis imperfecta, and that she has undergone multiple surgeries for recurrent fractures, and that approximate cost  of her treatment would be two lac rupees.

None of the doctors have been able to instill confidence in Padma that her daughter would be able to regain proper health, nor have they succeeded in suggesting any effective treatment to keep the disease at bay. The mother is always busy in keeping an eye on Preethi to ensure that she does not stand, nor is pushed by someone, and she does not fall down. Because any fall will need surgery. The doctors, who have advised the mother to carefully look after her daughter, have kindled a hope in her by saying that there is a remote possibility of the girl becoming like any other child in future. Padma, who has already spent over three lac rupees towards her daughter’s treatment, is overcome with worries, as none of the doctors have been able to promise of total cure for this ailment.

Preethi, a fourth standard student at the government primary school in Kodapadi, is good in several activities, with special interest in music and drawing. But her mother has to be her side, right from attending to nature’s call, eating, bathing, walking to school, bringing her back etc. Sridhar, who was a bus driver on daily wage basis, recently died after slipping while alighting from a bus. Padma is now surrounded by problems, and the death of her husband has cast additional responsibilities on her shoulders.

Padma has sought help from philanthropists for providing treatment to her child, as she finds it hard to even buy medicines. She can be contacted at Padma, wife of Sridhar, Janata Colony, Bharath Nagar, fifth cross, Kodapadi Gujjadi, Kundapur taluk, Udupi district. She has requested willing donors to extend possible help by remitting money to her below-mentioned account.
