Akshaya Patra, a pioneering mid-day meal program to facilitate the education of underprivileged children in India, whose numbers are alarmingly high.
By providing unlimited, nutritious, hygienically cooked noon meals in government schools and government run day-care centers (anganwadis), the Akshaya Patra program strives to reduce hunger pangs and promote universalization of primary education.
Ushering in a technology-intensive operating model that ensures high-quality, hygienic food on the one hand and increases internal efficiencies on the other the program has created a new image for mid-day meals in India. The program is managed professionally, audited scrupulously and implemented diligently. Hence, its cost per child is one of the lowest anywhere in the world.
With a secular, non-discriminatory approach, the Akshaya Patra program which started in the year 2000, serving 1500 children in Bangalore, now reaches out to over 13,36,831 impoverished children in over 9000 schools in 18 locations across the country.
Wholesome, nutritious three item menu, prepared in stringent hygienic conditions
The recent study conducted by A.C. Nielsen (2010) has reported that the attendance rate of the students has increased by 10% in Mangalore after the program implementation.
The central and state governments partly support the program, besides contributions from philanthropists, individual, community and corporate donors.
It is only in partnership with concerned individuals such as you, we can steer the program forward and encompass many more needy children.
Transparent, professionally managed organization run by a Board of Trustees with the support of committed professionals and volunteers.
Towards achieving transparency, our accounts are audited by BSR and Co. and under IFRS it is audited by KPMG.
