Mangalore: MBA Course at SJEC – Producing Future Managers
Mangalore, Nov 6: The Department of Business Administration of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC) was established in 2007 as a postgraduate department in recognition of the vital need to develop competent managers to meet the growing needs of the country. Today the SJEC well known for educational excellence has emerged as one of the premier technical institutes of south India.

About the MBA Course
The department offers two-year full time MBA programme approved by AICTE, Ministry of HRD, Government of India and is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum, Karnataka. The two-year course enhances business intelligence, communication, skills and organizational decision making while preparing the students for a range of careers in business, industry and government. The course also aims to prepare students to assume leadership roles in private or public sector with confidence and competency.
There are three specializations namely Marketing Management, Finance Management and Human Resource Management. Admission Procedure
Graduation in any discipline with 50% marks (45% for SC/ST) is eligible. MAT, CAT, KMAT, XAT, ATMA or PGCET scores are considered for admission to MBA programme. Government quota seats are filled through centralized counseling. Management seats are distributed on the basis of merit decided through group discussion and personal interview where intellectual capacity, management aptitude, leadership and qualities of service and enterprise are evaluated.

The Karnataka candidates are eligible under the following category:
i) Government seats both reserved and general category
ii) Management seats if surrendered by the private institutions
Non-Karnataka candidates are eligible for general management seats only.
Guest Lectures
Apart from regular lectures, guest lectures are organized periodically to supplement the classroom teaching. Experts from industry and academia are invited to deliver lectures on contemporary management topics and industry practices.
Industrial Visits
Industrial visits are organized to acquaint students with the actual organizational environment where they interact with the employees and the management. These visits provide students with the much needed exposure to the practical aspects.
Industrial exposure is given during the vacation so that students get a feel of real life situations.
Support Facilities
Library: The department has a spacious library having an excellent collection of latest books, magazines, journals and periodicals on management. The library remains open for nearly 12 hours until 10 pm on all working days for the benefit of students and faculty. Apart from the department library, students have access to the central library of the engineering college for traditional and digital references.
Computer Lab: The department has a separate computer lab. The lab is well equipped with the latest technology and again is open until 10 pm.
Placement and Training Cell: The Placement and Training Cell is headed by a qualified and experienced placement officer. The cell conducts regular training programmes for personality development, entrepreneurship development and such other soft skills, thus assisting students for project placement as well as final placement.
The placement cell offers training to pre-final and final year students to prepare them to face interviews successfully with confidence. On-campus and off-campus placement interviews are arranged during the final semester. A number of IT and non-IT firms come to the campus to conduct interviews and select students.
As per the immediate past placement records are concerned, students got jobs through campus interviews in well-reputed companies like Wipro, Infosys, Satyam, Tech Mahindra, ITC Infotech, TCS, Accenture, Bharathi Shipyard, JSW, Mahindra and Mahindra, Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers Limited and Spicer India to name a few.

Personality Development Activities: Workshops and training on soft skills and personality development are arranged with reputed management consultants to map the personality profile of students, identify their strengths and weaknesses and provide specialized training to correct any deficiency.
Toastmasters Wing at the department aims to shed the timidity in students and develop confidence as well as courage to discuss on the topic at any given context.

The first national level PG Management fest of the department, Zephyr – 09 was held in April wherein 10 colleges from across the country participated gave a platform for students to exhibit their managerial skills.
First Outgoing Batch
The ring ceremony of the first outgoing batch was held on May 29, 2009. All the outgoing students were presented with the college ring upon taking the oath.
