Mangaluru, Jan 18: Director of Fr Muller medical college, Fr Richard Coelho, unveiled Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) machine at Indiana Hospital and Heart Institute, Pumpwell in the city on Friday, January 18.

Addressing the gathering, Fr Richard Coelho said, "Mangaluru is a very small city where you have educational institutions, medical colleges and hospitals. Within two kilometer radius from Pumpwell, we have lots of medical colleges and hospitals. It does not mean that there are lots of sick people in Mangaluru. This can make way to medical tourism in the city. Some institute has already given a start to this.

"I congratulate Kumble brothers in launching this new OCT machine. The machine looks small, but costs a lot and it is very effective. It can give best treatment for the patients. This may not be used for all patients but can be used for complicated cases. We do not get much turnover from this costly machine. So it is better, if we can have MOUs signed," said Fr Richard Coelho.

Senior cardiologist Dr A V Shetty said, "As science is moving fast, technology gets more advanced. Satisfaction for the doctors is in giving comfort to the people, which cannot match even an income of a million dollars. Doctor is a profession, where people will remember him or her."

Medical director of KMC hospital Dr Anand V said, "Whenever we introduce a new machine, we should not look into the money it generates, but see how it benefits the patients."

Chief Interventional Cardiologist and MD, Dr Yusuf Kumble said, “Addition of OCT to Indiana Hospital will make Indiana Cardiac Institute as one of the leading institutes among cardiac centers. This will attract international patients to Mangaluru as part of medical tourism.

Chief Pediatrician and chairman of Indiana hospital Prof Dr Ali Kumble welcomed the gathering. Consultant interventional cardiologist Dr Abdul Mansoor rendered the vote of thanks.

About optical coherence tomography (OCT)

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is the most modern and advanced technology in heart care. Through this technology, doctors can now see inside the coronary artery of the heart with extreme clarity and can analyse the kind of blocks in the heart, whether it is due to, cholesterol, calcium or fibrous block in angioplasty patients.

OCT therefore helps the Doctor to guide and place the stent with extreme accuracy at the required position, making Angioplasty highly efficient and successful compared to conventional methods.

OCT guided angioplasty will now give high success rates in all patients including, elderly and high risk cases.

This technology is coming for the first time in Mangaluru and third in the state of Karnataka. This will be highly useful for people in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Hassan, Madikeri and North Kerala.

This service will be extended to all types of patients at an affordable price. Patients can now ask for OCT-guided heart procedures which will result in high success rates with immense benefits.
