December 4, 2007

She is unable to communicate like any other common individual. But her paintings convey her feelings and tell the viewer her worth as a human being.

Zena Colaco, a resident of Kankanady, was born deaf and dumb. But her skills with a brush on canvas set her apart as someone unique among other people who are specially-abled.

Twenty-five-year-old Zena is one of the topmost painters in the city. The staunch support to her talent from her father Stan Colaco, a retired journalist, and mother Brincy Colaco, has helped her to achieve these great heights.

According to her mother Brincy, her painting skills came to light by sheer chance. Her two brothers Aaron and Brandon were using painting boxes for their school purposes. One fine day Zena saw a chocolate box cover and designed it accordingly. This really brought out her ability to paint. This was a pleasant surprise for her parents. Zena was just 12-13 years old child then. Beginning from that day, her parents firmly decided to promote and encourage her talent.

Later she studied in Vamanjoor Mangala Jyoti School for 2 months before passing SSLC from IGNOU, that too without any coaching from a teacher. Most of the time, her mother alone was her teacher. Similarly, she completed a two-year diploma in Fashion Technology at the Mangalore Institute of Fashion Technology where she got far wider exposure to her talent. But she did not pursue Fashion Technology, because of the limited scope in this field. But she continued with her painting.

Zena can creatively and convincingly express her ideas through the medium of oil painting, glass painting, mural and sculpture. Her paintings convey a lot and make the viewers to think a lot. Her physical challenges have never proved any obstacle to her achievements.

At the same time, she has studied to read the lips. She also writes and tells what she wants to say. Meanwhile, William Pais, owner of Orchid Art Gallery, located at Kadri Toll Gate, is doing his best to promote her talents. According to him, the society should recognize her talents.

As is the case with any differently-abled child, she is not the one who needs sympathy from anybody. But she needs encouragement which would take her to newer heights in the world of art. She wants to do a lot in the field of painting.

Art-lovers and philanthropists should come forward to promote her talent.  Her paintings are available for sale at Orchids Art Gallery, Kadri Toll Gate, Mangalore.

I am amazed and impressed with the artistic abilities of Ms. Zena Colaco. Her paintings convey a lot of message and she is a versatile painter, because she can do oil and glass paintings and also create murals. This apart, she is a sculpture too. People in Mangalore have to encourage this lady. She is great.
