Mumbai : If you are familiar with Tulu and Kannada films from 1980's to early 2000,  then you must have heard of Tulu hit movies like 'Bagyvantedi', 'Pettai Pili', 'Badkere Budle', 'Daareda Seere', 'Onte Adjust Malpi'...If you remember these movies then you cannot forget the hero of these movies - Sadashiv Salian.

Over 50 Tulu-Kannada movies are in his name; in Tulu he is the hero and in Kannada he is the villain.  But no doubt he is one of the few actors of class who were born in the coastal region of Karnataka and who bought glory to the Tulu movie industry.

But where is Sadashiv Salian today?

Here is the sad and unbelievable story of this yesteryear hero and a great artiste Salian.  Daijiworld's Mumbai correspondent, Rons Bantwal, along with tv cameraman, visited Salian's  house in Mira Road when he came to know of the sad state of Salian's life. 'Pettai Pili', 'wounded tiger' in Tulu, himself lay wounded at home.

Salian as actor:

Sadashiv Salian, a proud son of Tulunad,  is a born actor. He has acted in hundreds of  Tulu and Kannada stage plays. Though he received quite a few offers from Marathi and Hindi film-makers to act their movies, he loyally stuck to Kannada and Tulu, purely for the love of the two languages.

He had a secure job with Central Bank in Mumbai, but 'film and acting madness' kept him away from his job. He kept skipping his working hours and the bank suggested to him that he take voluntary retirement (VRS). But when in fact he applied for VRS, the bank claimed that since he earned his livelihood from other sources, he was not entitled to receiving any benefits. Morever, his job was snatched. He was not eligible for any pension either. Hence he was a loser in every respect.

Bad time for Silver Screen Hero / Villain:

Salian acted with big names in Kannada like Vishnuvardan, Ravichandran, Shivraj Kumar and many others. He used to earn Rs 25 to 30 thousand per movie. But at end of the month, he hardly saved 5-6 thousand bucks. "Many a time producers have ditched me without paying my fees, and there are also incidents where I paid my hotel bills from my pocket," Salian recalls bitterly.

It was in 2002 that he met with a car accident, which left him with broken legs. That was the peak time of his career, a time when he was getting many offers from all sides. But this major accident rendered him  bed-ridden for a long time and he could not even walk properly. By the time he was trying to  walk a little, he happened to trip down the steps and injured the same leg again. From there on,  he could not recover. "Uttara Dhruvadim..Dakshina Druvadim' was the last movie he acted in. Thereafter, he never got to have his face painted.

Eventually, he had to spend a lot on medicines. No friends, no movie directors or no one from the film industry came to his aid. He had sell off his flat in Andheri to take care of his medical  expenses. And today he is living in a small, rented single-room house in Mira Road with his wife.

Longing for the end of 'colourful' life:

"My two daughters are married, and they help us in some ways, but I no longer want to be a burden for anyone. I am just looking forward to the end of my 'colourful' life," says Salian, with his full of tears.

"If was still working with the Bank, I would not have been in this situation. I believed in art, I was attracted to it by way of a passion, hobby and talent, but now my life is a burden to others," says he, with a tinge of regret for leaving the bank job.

'Stage and cinema cost us our happiness' - wife Sushila

All this apart, his wife Sushila has been a great support to her husband now. "The only achievement of ours in life was getting the two daughters married. My husband's passion and obsession for stage and cinema totally brought us down. This was destiny. No point in blaming anyone,"  said Sushila, finding it hard to control her tears, as she confided in Daijiworld team.

Things have come to such a pass that the husband tries console the wife and the latter consoles the former. What a twist of fate in the life of a great artiste and of his wife?

Shall we give a life to a sinking artiste ?

If some artistes suffer in their lives just because of their contribution to the language and art, then they should not be allowed to wilt away. Salian's fans are spread all over the world, and not many of them know about the present state Salian is in. This could be an ideal opportunity for all those to support Salian and help the couple in whatever best possible way, so that tomorrow if an artiste is born, he / she should not stay away from using the inborn talent or the contribution to the art, language and culture will remain unsung, unwept and unhonoured.

"If someone helps me at this stage financially, I am sure I will bounce back. I will act again and I will settle the financial burden I faced...," says Salian boldly, and still brimming with confidence and faith in his acting talent.
