Mangalore: Do We Require A Separate State for Tuluvas?

Mangalore: India is a union of 28 states and 7 union territories. The beauty of this land is its unity amidst diversity. Turn the pages of history and one will find that every partition had political and social impact on the unity and development of the nation.

Quite contrary to this, the British taught us the ‘Divide and Rule’- division on the basis of religion, caste and religion. It’s 58 years since our independence, but the lesson taught by the English still works its way.

Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand being the newly formed states, the Kodava movement for a separate state has died down and here is the Tuluva movement for a separate Tulu State.

A recent development in Dakshina Kannada is the formation of a pressure group to demand for a separate State for the Tuluvas. Led by its convenor Dinesh, the Mulki-based Tulu Rajya Horata Samiti, a registered body has been mooting this idea.

A hard blow to this movement for a separate Tulu State is from the State Tulu Sahitya Academy. The Academy has rightly opposed this demand.

Seetharam Kulal

“The country has borne the brunt of partitions and has been broken on several elements and issues. Further breaking it up on a linguistic basis is unwise and also hazardous to the nation’s health,” stated president of the State Tulu Sahitya Academy M Seetharam Kulal in an exclusively chat with Daijiworld.

The demand for a separate Tulu State is highly impractical, he said.

Further fortifying his argument, Kulal said that the hue and cry for a separate State for the Tuluvas is not justified as formation of a new state means setting up a new cabinet, appointment of ministers and this would trigger a series of serious issues to be tackled.

Prominent among them would be language. If Kannada State Karnataka has still not implemented Kannada language as state language, how will the idea of using Tulu for a separate State hold successful, he questioned.

Further, Kulal added that if all the 1,500 languages demand for a separate State, our nation would collapse.

The Tulu Academy has made its stand clear that there is a need to unite for development of Tulu and not to form a separate State.

Undeterred by this is the group, which is on a drive to gather supporters to their dream of a separate State for Tuluvas.

“The injustice meted against the Tulunadu has crossed limits and thus a separate State is essential, says Dinesh of the Tulu Rajya Horata Samiti.

“It is disheartening that Tulu which is one among the five Dravidian languages has no State for itself. Under the Karnataka State, the growth of Tulu has been curtailed and the extensive use of Kannada has stunted the growth of Tulu, opines Dinesh.

He further adds that Tulu language, which has a history of over 2,500 years, has faced the onslaught of Kannada. Although it has a script of its own, Kannada language has become prominent while the Tulu script has completely died down.

A fight for justice to Tulu language, as the samiti members call it, has so far not attained any major support.

But the issue of whether we require a separate State for Tuluvas is the hot debate.
