If you happen to see an elephant disappear and reappear in front of your eyes, don't panic. It is just Jadugar Anand's magic at work. The middle-aged magician famed as the world’s fastest magician, is back in Mangalore city with his troupe, this time to perform new feats for the people of the city at the Town Hall
At his last visit Anand had made an elephant disappear from the stage. This time he will make an elephant appear on the stage in a matter of seconds. That’s Jadugar Anand's Mayalok.

He makes the Statue of Liberty disappear in slow motion, a trick performed for the first time in India. His world of illusion has been hailed by audiences and critics alike as one of the greatest magic shows of Asia, which is not merely performing tricks but creating miracles beyond your wildest imaginations. One can watch in awe as the Jadugar cuts a girl in half using high speed electric saw blade. Pigeons fly out of seemingly empty baskets, a dog goes into a box and out emerges a girl. Jadugar Anand's set of new tricks include passing through a rotating fan mounted on a table, girl balancing on a bamboo pole. He even brings an elephant onto the stage, much to the amusement of children. Girls floating and vanishing in mid air, birds appearing from his fingertips and many more breath taking illusions are what Anand offers.
In an exclusive interview to Daijiworld, Jadugar Anand spoke thus:
Viju: What is the present status of magic in India?
Anand: It’s indeed sad that there are no many takers for magic, which has still to be accepted as an art, rather than a mere entertaining profession. Between the two performing art forms held high globally are the Russian Circus and Indian Magic. But the younger generation has to be motivated to take up magic.

Viju: As the All-India Magic Federation national president you have been in the forefront in the campaign to set up an academy for magic. Why and how far have you progressed?
Anand: There is a need to form an academy for magicians, as this will help those from the new generations to learn the art. People should know more about this art as it could help get rid of many superstitions that exist in society. Every year, around 1,000 people get killed in our country because of misconceptions and superstitions related to black magic. The formation of an academy will help people have a clearer idea about magic and also encourage youngsters to learn the art.
The ground is ready for the formation of an academy in Jaipur and setting up an academy in Bangalore is also on cards.

Viju: Has the government been pro-active in promoting magic in the nation?
Anand: Magicians are a neglected lot in our country and they need more encouragement from the Government. I am thankful to the Government of Karnataka for not imposing entertainment tax on magic shows. Government was losing out on substantial revenue by sidelining Indian magic. Among the artists performing overseas, magicians bring in the maximum foreign exchange. However, government policies have not been encouraging and we don’t even have an academy to teach the art to our future generations.

Viju: Assimilation of latest technology into magic performances has brought in lot of innovations. Is the debate that conservative approach to magic pays dividends justified?
Anand: I am of the belief that a magician must be flexible. One must change according to time, season and pace (Samay, Kal and Ghati). Use of technology in magic has become inevitable where the purpose is to make it more attractive and presentable. In the background of advancements like TV and Internet, being conservative does not hold good.

Viju: You hold the record for riding a motorbike blindfolded from Indore to Bhopal, a distance of 200 km. With two world records in hand, how far have you progressed in your preparation for performing the popular Indian rope trick?
Anand: It’s my long cherished dream to perform the Great Indian Rope trick in front of a big gathering. The trick was last performed 50 years ago and has been forgotten. The International Association of Magicians wishes to revive this trick. It has announced a cash prize of $50,000 to the person who performs it once again. I wish to win this prize by performing the trick. I have been working on it. But too many eyes are on me to trace the secret of the trick. Until I make it a foolproof trick, I will not come out with any performance.
Viju: How were your visits to South India?
Anand: South India has got the potential to produce magicians. People here accept magic as an art. People here accept magic as an art. They are art lovers and their specific reception is what has pleased me. Up in the North, they have a different manner of reception. But down South the audience is very positive.

Viju: Tell us about your first encounter with magic?
Anand: I come from Jabalpur, MP and as a child I was inspired by street performers outside the school who would shower coins out of thin air. I learnt some tricks on my own. Around the same time, Osho was known to practice hypnotism on teenaged boys like me and I became his disciple for two years.

Viju: Your shows are spiced with special stage settings and costumes. What’s the secret behind this?
Anand: Magic is a visual art and thus creating an ambience of mystery, attraction and triggering curiosity is a must. It is my daughter a product of the National Institute of Fashion Designing who designs my costumes.
Anand's shows elevate the art of modern illusions to new heights in the global entertainment industry. His magical spell and his performances in Europe, Asia, America apart from the applauds he received in Brussels, where he received fastest magician award. Known as one of the best magicians of 21st century, Anand worked his own way up with his own shows to become world's fastest magician only to make India proud.

The world of magic can be quite engrossing. It's not just a mere sleight of hand and little tricks. Magic can go far beyond, to the power of the mind, to create illusions that can make you rub your eyes in disbelief. The magic bee has bitten Anand who can perform more than 5 lac magic tricks. He has been staging magic shows for the past 38 years and carrying this art to the younger
generation is the goal of this great magician.
