Mangalore: The Baligas of Bantwal have a legendary history. But what unites them together with one another and their roots is a virtual string. A lot of Bantwal Baligas who lost touch with their roots are now connected again with Bantwalbaliga.com. The thrill they experience when they find their ancestors name in the site cannot be expressed by words.
A mammoth endevour, Bantwalbaliga.com today has features family details of 3,372 BaLos (the traditional name to the Baligas).

The brain behind this network is a genealogist by hobby Gurudath Baliga. Gurudath renders his service in Magnum Intergrfiks and his sole research has also brought to light a prominent indicator that the BaLos have drifted from the Basrur Port region to Bantwal during the 16 th century.
Bantwalbaliga.com is a family tree website of the Gaud Saraswat Community of Bantwal Town in South Canara district. Started with a family ritual the present database consists of 3372 individuals.
“Our family inherits a custom of offering tarpanams to departed ancestors in the month of Mahalaya. During this ritual we have a practice of reciting the names of our ancestors. Thus we had a thin outline of the family tree in the beginning,” revealed Gurudath.
However, the original efforts of documenting the genealogy of the Baliga Family of Bantwal can be attributed to the Late Madhava Achutha Ramachandra Baliga who initiated the compilation of the Vamsha Vriksha (Family Tree) in 1917.
Late Narayana Pandu Narsayya Baliga continued Madhava Baliga's work, dedicating his precious time and energy. Thanks to these great men, the Bantwal Baligas have a comprehensive database of the Baliga family tree today.

There were significant efforts made to publish this database by the Bantwal Baliga Trust. But the last edition of the paper-based Vamsha Vriksha was in 1987.
“All the way the tree was nothing but a skeleton with names, that too names of only males. My father Venkatraya Narasimha Lakshumana Baliga took special interest in continuing the task of updating this mega tree. He used to record every update on a book,” records Gurudath.
The initial plan was to publish an updated Book of Charts. But soon it was realized that maintaining a software database of the family tree to accommodate the sheer volume of information would be ideal. In addition to the dynamic nature of data one also had to continuously update.
“We faced several challenges during our first attempt at making this information available online. The earlier version of the web edition did not permit us to make incremental changes. This meant, generating all the web pages for all of the family tree from scratch, every time there was an update. We have since then, upgraded to a better application that permits seamless updates.
The Baliga community spread far and wide across the world stand grateful to Dr Raghavendra Baliga (grandson of Sri Vaikunta Baliga the erstwhile speaker of Mysore state assembly) who sponsored the reconstruction of the website.
A Bantwal Baliga can search his name in this site which will lead him to a selective list of names wherein similar names are shown. He can further select his name from a combination of Father's and Grand Father's names and click to go to the individual page. He can further dig deep and reach upto the oldest ancestor known (1747 AD) by clicking the links.
The website also provides a number of navigational facilities wherein one can view the ancestral chart, descendant list etc.
Another special feature is the Relationship Calculator wherein one can check the relationship of the individual with others, which will be displayed in the form of a Relationship Chart.
Powered by the Next Generation of Genealogy Site building, the site is constantly updated with new additions and researches by Gurudath who admits his role model to be the great genealogist Michael Lobo.

Bantwal Jayant Baliga is a distinguished university professor at North Carolina State University and is an internationally renowned inventor and scientist. He has written 12 books, over 500 scientific publications, and been granted more than 100 US Patents. In recognition of his invention and commercialization of the Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT), Scientific American Magazine named him one of the 'Eight Heroes of the Semiconductor Revolution'.
Bantwal Purushotham Baliga is the vice-president of Support Services, Jet Airways. Baliga is a qualified aircraft maintenance engineer from the Civil Aviation Training Center, Allahabad and was associated with Air India for 37 years. At the time of his retirement from Air India, he held the position of Director, Engineering.
Bantwal Vittal Baliga was an electronics engineer who served as the first Chief Engineer of All India Radio after independence with responsibility for setting up the radio network in India between 1947 and 1958. At the request of the Defense Ministry, he took the helm of Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) in 1958. As Chairman and Managing Director of BEL, he introduced the production of semiconductor technology and TV tubes bringing BEL into profitability by 1960. He was responsible for founding the Institute for Electronics and Telecommunications Engineers in India and served as its Founding President.
BSD Baliga served as the Chairman of Indian Railway Board (1971-1973) and was instrumental in establishing Mangalore – Bangalore railway link.
Dr B S Baliga, late Curator, Madras Record Office (now Tamilnadu Archives), deserves to be remembered as the Architect of Madras Archives. During his tenure for nearly 25 years, he made the Madras Record Office an efficient instrument of service not only to the Government but also to all the research scholars from different parts of India and the world.
Major General Bantwal Pandurang Baliga served in First World War under Indian Medical Service a medical wing of Indian Army.
R K Baliga was the Father of the Electronic city in Bangalore. It was his brainchild when he was the chairman & managing director of Keonics.
B Vaikunta Baliga was a lawyer, MLA, Law Minister and Speaker of Mysore State Assembly. He was also involved with the freedom fight and directly in touch with Mahathma Gandhi. He died while he was the Speaker of Mysore State in 1968.
Vakil B Venkatrao Baliga was a lawyer and was junior to Sri Ammembal Subbarao Pai the founder of Canara Bank. Baliga was elected to the post of Chairman, Municipal Council of Mangalore Municipality in 1938. He served from 1938-1943. He was jailed for participating in the Indian Independence Movement. Because of the ill treatment and torture he suffered in the jail he died soon after his release.
Swamy Paratparananda (Bantwal Damodar Baliga) took Sanyasa and become a monk at Ramakrishna Mission. There after he was called as Swami Paratparananda. The Mission sent him to the Center in Buenos Aires-Argentina in 1968. He became the spiritual head of the Center and dedicated his life to spread the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna in Argentina and Brazil.
