Mangalore: Snake-Catcher Joy Mascarenhas - The 'King' of Cobras
Vineeth Monis

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore

Mangalore, Jun 1:
Joy S Mascarenhas is a herpetologist, a person with interest and expert knowledge on the natural history of reptiles.

Mascarenhas, a real estate businessman by profession, has a keen interest in snakes and is an expert in catching and handling snakes in the city.

He has caught almost a thousand snakes, including 60 King Cobras, from various places. On an average, he gets a call a day to catch snakes and till date he has been bitten by two snakes, one of them his 97th cobra.

His passion for snakes dates back to his childhood. He is not professionally trained, amazingly enough, he learnt the art of handling snakes by watching television channels and practicing it!

Mascarenhas caught his first snake (a cobra) in 2006 and King Cobra in 2007, and made headlines in almost every channels and newspapers. He has also trained another snake catcher, Ashok, for two years making him capable of catching King Cobras.

He says, "This distinctive habit of catching snakes has become a routine now." He has keen interest in collecting snakes, but as government does not permit this, the snakes caught are released into thick forests like Charmadi, Agumbe. Around 20 King Cobras have been donated to Pilikula Biological Park, Mangalore. King Cobra, Russell Viper, Krait, Wolf Snake and various other varieties of snakes are caught by him.

According to Mascarenhas, snakes eat rats and control their population. If all snakes are killed, the rat population will grow rapidly and no food grains will be left on earth. About 40 percent of the food crops is been destroyed by rats. Snake is the only animal which could reach rat’s burrow and catch them. Hence, he advices people not to kill snakes as it helps in maintaining biological balance.

Joy, despite being a professional real estate guy, having turned into a self taught professional snake catcher is really admirable! The pictures depict the way he enjoys his work and his dedication, passion, and love for snake conservation! I have read somewhere that King Cobras refuse to eat in captivity and have to be force fed? Very good job that he is releasing them back into the dense forests of Agumbe and Charmadi where they will be safe!! Thanks Daiji World for the beautiful pictures, really enjoyed them!!!

Joy is a very special nature conservationist and deserves to be honoured because he puts his life in danger for the benefit of both, the people concerned as well as the reptile (Emergency calls ). He not only catches snakes with utmost care, without harming them but also makes it a point to release them hundreds of miles into deep forest territory. he does all this at his own expence. A very gentleb person and has a thorough knowledge of most of the snakes inhabiting the western Ghats. It would be nice if any NGO or organization comes forward to help him write a small book regarding poisonous and nonpoisonus snakes for the benefit of one and all. We wish him all the very best and be rest assured of our continuous support both moral and financial.

The one that are in the picture here are sold for approximately Rupees Seven Thousand each in shenzen and many other parts of China.I asked them for more details and found that ,the blood is mixed with liquor, the tail and head are used in the soup and the middle part is fried on the frying pan.It is a expensive delicacy and the people believe that since the blood has rich proteins it helps to cure many health problems. Each cage where the cobras are kept has a sign board to read not to come close to it and says that it can spray the venom as long as five feet from the cage.Mr.Joy is doing a amazing task for the betterment of this planet.Wish you all the best.I hope he can be invited by all the communities at temples, churches and mosque and give training to people on saving the snakes.

Dear Joy,

Please take care of self as you have a family to look after. I have seen people who play with snakes happens to be victims of snake bites..It happens in 99% of cases. May Lord protect you and your skills...We know you dont want to harm snakes but how do the snakes know your intention. Before venturing into snake catching plese pray to Lord for your safety and we too pray for you. aameen

Certainly Joy, you are courageous as few of us mere mortals would dare to get anywhere nearby. At the same time, you too will agree with me, mere courage and the knowledge are inadequate to handle them. On the contrary, it is the 'love' and 'respect' you have towards these helpless reptiles enables you to touch them. With their ability to sense any danger (sixt sense?!), a snake would turn hostile and will not allow the person even to get close to it.

People kill snakes out of ignorance and fear. Mr. Mascarehnas needs to educate willing students by having workshops, on how to catch/handle poisonous snakes and not to kill them. These days because of intense real estate construction, snakes are coming out of their habitat into areas where people reside in search of rats. And people in return kill these snakes when they see one. Man is the threat to snake, and not the other way round.

I know Joy from childhood. We used to be in the same class from 5th #Standard. At that time he used to be a very funny kid in the school. I still remember how funny he used to be in the class. He used to make every one laugh. He is very talented in Drama roles. He is one of the best comedy actor I know from childhood. He was really good at it. Hats off Joy.
