Small Hidden Wonders of Nature

by Dr. Eugene D’Souza, Mumbai

Oct 13, 2009

As the rainy season receding, the grass, shrubs and plants manifest the small hidden wonders of nature in the form of colourful tiny flowers of varied shapes and sizes. In the open wilderness, fences, edges of paddy fields, on the banks of rivers and streams, the flowers, as bright spots draw the attention of those who are keen observers of nature.

Some of the grass flowers are so small that by a cursory glance one would not be able to appreciate their beauty.

Morning is the best time to savour the beauty of the wild nature. With night dew, the tiny flowers spring to life and beauty. Tiny dew drops on small spider-webs on the grass, shine like diamonds under the reflection of the morning sun rays. The shrubs and small plants with cluster of flowers attract bees and butterflies that hover around them.

Mushrooms growing on certain kind of dead wood manifest the hidden secrets of nature. Even the thorny shrubs known as ‘nachike mullu’ which have practically taken over barren paddy fields and open spaces add colour and beauty to the wilderness through bulb-like hairy flowers which gradually wither away by afternoon and rejuvenate with the night dew bouncing back to life in the morning.

Unlike the garden flowers, the small hidden wonders of nature spread through the wind, bees and water mysteriously and pop up in new and unexpected places, places where formerly there had been nothing.

As the butterfly or the bee sits upon the wild flower, it does not have a care, except to enjoy the world for what it is, a place of happiness and joy. Things in the wild are full of beauty. It is no wonder that the wilderness is full of charms in nature. I am just astonished by the beauty of the wild.

Being in the village i make it a point to observe the varied manifestations of the nature in any form.

To get engrossed in the beauty of nature leads one to think about the mysteries of the small hidden wonders of the nature. It can be a breathtaking scene that can cause one’s spirit to climb to new heights.

Spending some time being close to nature is always refreshing. If one thinks deeper, he can get that feeling of oneness with the universe and the wild. The fresh air in the wilderness is enough to spring one back to reality of life which is filled with hope, inspiration and promise.

Walking amongst the tiny hidden wonders of nature and looking up in the blue sky, i could not help but hold in awe the supreme force that governs the enormous universe and also takes care of the little flowers.

“The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land.” Song of Solomon 2:12 “...And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you.

Why do you have so little faith? So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” Matthew 6:28-34 "Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these." Luke 12:27
